SO I was thinking what sets are actually worth completing. I am sure this discussion could go either way. So I will list sets and values and you make the call on worth completing. For the sake of discussion assume you have ALL OF THE COMMONS AND UNCOMMONS and we are talking the value of rares vs the set value.

For the sake of others and me I stopped at 10th edition and nothing before Revised/FE/HL

SETS VAlue
4th 150.00
5th 125
6th 125
7th 125
8th 120
9th 125
10th 170
Alliances 110
Coldsnap 90.00
Mirage 150
Visions 110
Weatherlight 80.00
Urza's legacy 105
Urza's destiny 100
mercadian 160
Nemesis 50
Prophecy 60
Invasion 110
Planeshift 70
Apocalypse 90
Odyssey 175
Torment 75
Judgment 90
Legions 70.00
Scourge 80
Darksteel 200
Fifty Dawn 125
COK 150
Betrayers 100
Saviors 80
Guildpact 125
Dissension 100
Time Spiral 120
Timeshifted 70
Planar chaos 80
Lorwyn 180
SOA 125
Conflux 100
Alara Reborn 75

Ok you don't have to argue all of them but pick out a few and make an argument. I kind of just took an average of sales values to come up with the value. I know this comes up every now and then, but I thought I would make a post with a bunch all at once. This may be a trade value post, but I am looking more for a discussion not "hey a 10th edition set is worth more then 170"

I dont make sets but a friend of mine does and Ive done alot of my trading on this site just fetching stuff for his sets. All in all Id say its not worth it in the long run but if you have a lot of cards and you make it a hobby or want to collect and you get enjoyment out of it then ya do it.

Keep in mind that having lots of commons and crap rares wont really help you. They are hard to find and a pesk because people dont list undesirable junk on their have lists. If you have a good shop in your area that sells bulk for cheap then that will probably help. The highly playable money rares really only factor into the price of the set.Say for example darksteel.Acbound ravager, aether vial swords etc are the only real factors in the price set, only set builders value the other cards.Theres alot of junk and filers in sets that I dont see ever seeing play in a deck. When you get older and you want to part with it,Youll be hard pressed to sell the set altogether. Most players just want the chase playables.

Also you have 4th ed at 150.And a lot of your prices I really dont see.4th was the first core set without dual lands.Consider that nowadays cards are a lot more powerful and there is a lot more variety out there to make a deck than in 1996.Serra angel, savanah lions, sengir vampire volcanic dragon righteousness are all uncommon now because theres simply better stuff out there.Shivan dragon used to be awesome now its almost a crap rare.Wrath of god, birds of paradise used to be $10+ and considered some of the best cards out there. Now there under $5.

So if you get enjoyment out of it then I would say yes.It helps to have alot of the set fillers but the last cards that you will always get to when making sets are the money cards.

My two cents

When I first started playing magic way back when. I decided then to try and get a complete set of every set and it was really just a matter of having the money to buy what ever card I needed.

But then about 4-5 years ago I decided that was to easy and now I'm after a playset of each set.

Is it really worth the time and effort prolly not but its a good challenge and I'm a common and uncommon box junkie so thats how I got started. Plus every once in awhile you find something unusal in a stores bulk box, not too long ago I found a square cut 5th edition shatter I think it was.

Also when you meet new people its very satisfying to see peoples reactions when you show them the collection. Mines not even that good and local people still get very impressed by it.

Interesting... Alliances is only $110?

Is half of Alliances' value really tied up in FoW?

What do you define as 'worth it'? I know you're asking our opinions, but really, what are you going to do with them? Your just want any set you can complete on the cheap, or those are interesting sets to you?
I'ts absolutely worth finishing a set if you have spare funds and like the set. I'd like to collect the full Innistrad block just for flavor.

But no, half are those are not 'worth it' because they were boring uninteresting sets, and some of them were printed really ugly.

There's a couple lands worth a couple bucks, like lake of the dead and kjeldoran outpost but otherwise yes. I'm not a huge seller or anything but when i had a couple complete sets of alliances they never moved or even saw offers around 100. This was when FoW was a solid $40 here.

The discussion or challenge is what sets are worth more then the sum of their parts assuming you have all commons and uncommons.

Like m10 the cards are more separately then as a set.
It seems to me that 4th is worth more as a set then the individual cards total.

Thats the discussion not do I have the value to high or to low or does one have the time to complete a set, but purely is the set worth more then the sum of its parts then if you tried to sell or buy the singles.

I think there are lots of set collectors out there and many people buy the cards as sets and many enjoy putting the sets together. So if you want another angle is if a person started from scratch and had to pay the above value or buy all the cards individually which way would you go. Assume time is not the issue or if you have all of the bulk stuff or money rares, just if you built from scratch would you say buy the set complete or pick up the singles.

BTW, 10th ed was after future sight, so Lorwyn on shouldn't be on your list.

I can't imagine 4th through 9th being worth that much. Those sets are mostly full of junk and what good cards (that are still desirable) are left are ugly because of wb.

You're oddly missing some sets. You don't like Saga, but you like Prophecy (which honestly should be cheaper than Nemesis. Ditto for Onslaught, Mirrodin, Future Sight and so on. Saviours seems high too since that set is worse than Prophecy.

Where's the Portal sets? It's crazy expensive now but P3K is one of the most flavourful sets ever printed.

me am crazy set collector. I have all the base/core and expansion sets from Unlimited to current. I don't have complete sets of Commander, the Portal sets, Starter, Anthologies and the like. I doubt it's practical but I'll keep the sets long after I sell out my play library. I have to give props to MOTL and it's members for helping me complete many of them.

I used to collect sets. I had FE through EX at one point, as well as CH. I took most of my sets apart. I kept Unglued, Unhinged, Timespiral Timeshifted, and Chronicles. I decided to go after foil versions where applicable, and I finally finished pimping my Chronicles set! I'm casually working on the foils, not a big deal to me.

As for if they are worth it, I don't think so. Bu they're FUN!

Perhaps I went about this the wrong way or what not, but it appears that according to the above posters and some pms that Unless you enjoy putting together sets and have tons of time THAT NOT A SINGLE SET IS WORTH COMPLETING. No one could make a case for any set that was worth more then the sum of its parts based off the values listed.

So to sum this up for set collectors BUY YOUR SETS OFF OF EBAY. Do not waste your time on putting the set together because the individual cards are worth more and you can make money by breaking the sets down into singles.
