I am living proof that you can do your own thing and win. BUT, you have to do a lot of research. You have to know the metafield as much as you can. You need to play test against those decks. You can certainly live in your own universe, but, you have to be able to beat the decks out there.

I played Sneak attack at the first amateurs and no one had an answer for it. The only thing that killed me (in top 8) was I drew 5 lands -both games COMBINED. Pretty tough to win when you don't draw lands.

I have won with other decks too. So, yes, you can win, but, it is hard, and you have to know the field inside out. Do research, practice, and make every card the best it can be and dominate the field.
