Topic: looking for advice for selling a collection intelligently

So my brother and I are selling the rest of our MtG collection. neither of us can really play competitively anymore being parents, and we were the suckers who pooled with "friends" and got alot of it, "lost". but with what we have less, mtgprice.com has put our actual trade value, NOT including our junk rares is sitting at over $2,000 USD on our trade binder alone. we recognize that even with seeking out all the buylists to sell to, that we'll be pulling about half of that, IF everything goes well. and piecing it all out, will only realistically get rid of the high money cards, and maybe a few things people are looking for. so does anyone know of a safe way to sell a collection with neither party getting ripped off? i know there's a sell option here, but i'm so new it's not like anyone else would send first, and after being ripped off of most of my collection i'm particularly wary. I plan on posting a trade/sell list on MOTL, once i have it completed, but i figured i'd ask the internet trading community in one of the best review forums. thank you all for your time.

Look for people with high refs for the higher value items. 100 is generally a good number. You can also look at refs and see how active they have been recently.

I was laughing at the idea that someone couldn't rip you off in a face-to-face meeting. In any case.... If you want to liquidate as your OP suggest, take it to a large event nearby (Grand Prix or some SCG event) and shop prices at the vendors. Just look up the schedules for GPs and SCG events to find one near you and plan a dumping trip. The vendors are super picky about condition. Sometimes they'll take lower condition cards at an even steeper discount, but if they are easier-to-get cards, they may not even bother. Depending on how active Magic players/traders are in your community, you may be able to move it via craigslist. I suggest setting up a lookover at a local card shop or some other public venue you're comfortable with. If you want to sell it yourself for higher profit, then I hope you're ready for some work (read: hassle) and increased risk. I would do as Demilio said. __________________ "Message to women worldwide: Girls....we're stupid. We don't like games. We don't know games. We can't read minds. if youre looking to get the most value sell individually. If you just want to get rid of it in one collection be prepared to sell cheaper. If you know whats good and worth listing that's a plus.If not maybe ask a friend that knows whats good and worth listing.Good commons and uncommons are worth something too.I suggest selling on here.I don't know where else you could sell online maybe tcg player but I don't know how that works.Make a list on the sale forum here and list everything that you have with good com/unc.It takes time but thats how youll get the most value.

With the prices you have posted you need to cut them by 15% to make some sales on here. My suggestion is to take them to a vendor and just be done with it. The amount of time you are going to save will put you ahead. The endless back and forth dealing is not worth it on here. You could also list on TCG player and make a few more dollars then a vendor would give, but then you would have to stuff 100's of envelopes.

I put what mtgprice put the total value at, which was 2300 and asked for 1,500. 15% of 2300 is 1955..... Are you saying lower the 1,500 by another 15%?

MTgprice trade value is not really a good price to use for selling cards.

Maybe i should say this from the get go, I'm autistic, I don't read between the lines well at all. I asked if he meant take 15% off the 1,500 price. The next response is saying how the website i used isn't very good..... I'm finding this to be confusing and frustrating. I understand now that the website used on this forum for trading is tcgplayer, but with work and my son I haven't had the time to go through everything on tcgplayer. MTGprices was much more efficient, and i stated that i'm willing to take less than i asked, but haven't had the time yet to go through it all on tcgplayer. I'm sorry for not being in the know on how everything is usually done here, as soon as i have the time to reprice it with TCG i will. Can i please formally request that questions are answered directly, so that I'm less confused? and i also don't mean to sound ungrateful, thank you for everyone who's taken the time to help answer my questions. have some good day folks.

That is a fairly reasonable request (with or without autism).__________________ "Message to women worldwide: Girls....we're stupid. We don't like games. We don't know games. We can't read minds. Say it like you mean or STFU." -rockondonMy Sale Thread

google search for "tcgplayer mass card entry". that lets you add all of the cards to a shopping cart at one time. paste a list of all the cards in the text box on that link, then optimize the cart (it's going to take a while! just let it optimize). that's the number you want to be looking at as a starting point imho

MTG price lists TCG player Low prices when you do the card searches which is a reasonable starting point to sell cards on here, I was just saying don't use the fair trade price value that is usually a more mid range retail price which you won't get here for your cards. Using TCG low area is usually a good guide though you may get the ocassionally scewed data due to a damaged card being the lowest so if you have the extra time using the tool stated in the entry above could be helpful, plus TCG player has it's own guide as well. Hope this helps a bit more.

I've noticed if the cards are old (like a beta sinkhole) you can usually depend on the tcglow / ebay recent sales for pricing (because they do not fluctuate much). If the cards are new, you have to be super careful. Some prices are low in ebay because nobody uses or cares about the cards, but high in TCG because they are technically rare. And visca versa, the card can be high in ebay because its been sitting there forever and the price is dropped.
