VIOLENCE?! HOW ABOUT THE FACT THAT OBAMA LED THIS NATION INTO A WAR IN AFRICA LAST MONTH WITH OUT THE APPROVAL OF CONGRESS... YOU EVER READ THE LAW ON THE WAY THIS COUNTRY ENTERS A WAR?!SINCE WHEN DOES THE PRESIDENT HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO JUST LEAD THIS NATION INTO WAR UNDER A COMMAND FROM NATO?! WHAT IS THIS, WORLD GOVERNMENT?! THIS IS BULL****!! I AM CITING FACTS. THIS IS REALITY DUDE, YOU NATION WAS LED INTO WAR LAST MONTH UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF A PRESIDENT WHO DID NOT FOLLOW ANY LAWS THAT GUIDE OUR NATION INTO WAR. God you're stupid. We have not entered a war, we're not even deploying troops. And yes, the president is allowed to utilize the military in a given engagement for 90 days before earning congressional approval. This is due to the War Powers Act. I can't wait to see how you deny this piece of reality. __________________

I think it's funny that they kill him, then go on to say they disposed of his body respectfully within 24 hours in accordance with Islamic tradition.Riiiiight. So they killed him, took DNA samples, then tossed the body into the Ocean quickly because they wanted to 'respect' his religious beliefs. I'm sorry, that story doesn't hold water with me. I'm sure many American's, hell, people all over the world wanted to see this bastard dead in the flesh, by disposing of his body they leave themselves open to all sorts of conspiracy theories.

There will always be conspiracy theories no matter what they did. If they kept it, people would assert that the body is fake or a doppleganger, etc.

I dunno about that, not many people out there think Saddam is still alive, we watched him die. ...also, it's boggling my mind reading comments on news sites that people think "well, Osama is dead, looks like the coalition can get out of Afghanistan now!". Yeah, that's a great idea! The ANA can handle it themselves, right? Let's arm a bunch of opium addicted soldiers of fortune, let them train with coalition forces, then leave without weeding out the Taliban informants. Good plan... for another war in 20 years.

So how do you think 70,000 Canadian soldiers are going to hold down any significant part of the US? Do you realize how much of a "no win" war it would be if Canada/US really went at it? We look the same as you and we speak the same as you, and we've got a land border thousands of miles long.

I'm not *from* Toronto. I'm only here for post-grad. I'm from Vancouver. Incidentally, North American English dialects seem to run north-south rather than east-west. So my English sounds the same as Californians, while people in Ontario sound more like East-Coast US. Though honestly there's barely any difference nowadays.

I just saw an opportunity to use hoser and ran with it, havn't heard people using it for a while =p. Sorry for affiliating you with native Torontonians. Many people on the east coast certainly have a very different way of speaking than those west of NB though, it's pretty easy to tell who is from Newfoundland or Cape Breton.

Honestly why wouldn't they kill him and dump the body. They don't want him to become more of a legendary martyr. Nobody wants an actual grave for Bin Laden that muslims could come gather at and make pilgrimages to. Thats why he was buried at sea. They can't bring him back to torture him so whats the point of having him alive. If we could have strapped him to a bomb we were going to drop on some other terrorists that would have worked for me though.

You make a good point, although you're waaaay off the mark over who would visit. A bin laden grave would be a physical symbol for al qaeda to rally and recruit around (much as he was in life). Muslims would probably travel to his grave as well...in order to throw their shoes on his corpse in disgust. I can't pretend to know for sure why they would try to bring him back alive, but if I had to guess it would be to try him in american courts as a citizen (which would be ludicrous, as the 5th and 6th amendments do not apply to him), or put him on trial in saudi arabia where he would be tried under sharia law (and, ironically, his resulting execution would be far more gruesome). In the latter case we run the risk of him escaping if turned over to a foreign country. I'm glad they just shot him. __________________

The main problem is that the vast majority of Muslims that did prescribe to that kind of thought reside in a highly unstable region that is very important to us and our national interest. Even though they are the minority there they are still in great enough to destabilize governments if motivated enough. So he got the Davy Jones treatment.

The US has not declared "WAR" since WWII. Every US involvement since has been a "humanitarian" or "police" action, regardless of the extent or length of our involvement. Many of these actions have been entered into at the request of groups with which we have treaties. This includes Korea (working under the UN), Vietnam, both Gulf Wars and Afghanistan. Once we declare war, Congress gets to control the purse strings. But the ability to unilaterally react to world events rests firmly with the President, as our Commander-in-Chief. This is true whether war is declared or not. It is one of the most important duties of a President. And Congress doesn't like being bothered with actual declarations of war. Sorry that you don't like who is calling the shots. [Note: I happen to think Obama is a tremendous upgrade over the guy we had before, and heads above all the current wanna-be types the right is pushing these days.] The recent Iraq "War" is a perfect example. It was never declared. (I won't go into the lies that got us involved) And once started, George Bush hid the actual costs from Congress. He buried the costs completely for as long as he could, then forced votes on last-second "supplemental budgets" with a PR campaign that if those budgets weren't passed, our soldiers would be put in harms way. The Republican majorities, being Lemmings, always passed those budgets, usually without asking a single question. The total cost, with most being hidden from the budget process, was well over $1 trillion, which today is part of our National Debt.
