I'm debating whether to keep in my current career or upskill into something new. I've made a few posts on reddit looking to engage with people:

https://old.reddit.com/r/academiceconomics/comments/9fayn6/i
_requested_a_mentor_in_rmentor_but_havent_had/

&

https://old.reddit.com/r/AskAcademia/comments/9mtgr8/differences_between_mast ers_in_economics_vs/

Am wondering if anyone here might be a good resource.

Plus I figured someone should make a post here once in a while :-P

I think I'd like to be a public policy analyst focusing on economics.

I make breakfast sandwiches for morning commuters, really good ones too! Does that count?

Are any of those commuters economists?

They might be. They give me money that I then put in a cash register. Economics at its finest!

You should stick with IT. Government / policy pays poorly if you aren't at the top.

Amusingly a potential career switch for me wouldn't be about the money. I know I'll take a pay hit. I'm looking to do something I feel is more meaningful to me. Something that I'm more interested in. I don't go home and read much about IT. I read more about econ/finance.

You know, it's funny how priorities change. I've been doing, rather successfully, the chef thing for a good long while. I've most recently been working for Copper Door, which was awarded Best Restaurant by NH Magazine; and The Riverhouse Cafe, which has won Best breakfast in Souhegan Valley 3 years running. In the last 2 weeks, I started working for a local sub shop chain called Nadeau's. He has a store inside a gas station and offered me the opportunity to launch breakfast there. On my interview, I described him a breakfast sandwich that would fit his concept, he loved it, and he hired me to make them. Working at a sub shop might be a less "glamorous" job per se, but I work Monday-Friday now. An absolute rarity for my industry. I get to do fatherly things now on the weekends with my 3 kids. And I get experience launching a concept, instrumental for my long term goal of opening my own establishment.

Think long term. Are you trying to make enough money to chase retirement early? Are you considering a change for change's sake? Are you just unhappy and burnt out?

Good luck either way.

hey that's exciting. congrats on the successful switch. for years ive wanted a masters and to get involved in public policy work. who knows, maybe 20 years from now i'd want to run for office. the choice to explore this now admittedly though is due to a couple reasons including we moved so i'm doing an hour commute to work, my company laid off a bunch of friends this year and i'm not feeling this place anymore after 13 years, and i'm 35 years old now...i was like 20 when i joined this site. i want to feel like i'm working toward something that makes me more satisfied. also my wife finally finished her 14-15 years of training and is a practicing doctor now so i dont have to subsidize her anymore. i couldn't have done this easily with her still in residency.
