Well take a look at the time when the ref was exchanged? Some people get careless/sloppy/lose interest/think they can get away with it/have something terrible happen to their life/greedy/whatever that they may have started out good with good intentions and over time because of them doing stupid stuff, they get banned.Look at a person that's got high refs and has been here for a long time (say, 3+ years), you're bound to see some people he/she traded with a long time ago eventually get banned. It doesn't mean that person was out to go on a ripping spree with everyone, just that once when that person was a good, honorable trader the transaction went fine.
If you see a newer trader that has a slew of recently traded with people that got banned, yeah, I'd be concerned. If you look at a person's refs and see that they may have had a few removed but the trades were in 2001, 2002, 2003 and so on then I'd still feel confident that person is a good trader regardless of their total refcount being lowered by a few idiots.
You can always e-mail the people the person traded with if you're that concerned about their reputation and you see their refcount being lowered by banned people.
Have to add in, my total recorded trades is 130 but 13 of those don't count because the other person got banned. Does this make me any less of a trader regardless of how long ago I registered onto here? (I don't even want to count Tha Gunslinga's or anyone else on the top 100 most refs that have any banned to find out what their real recorded trades are.)
