Topic: Problem with air when double-sleeving cards for your decks.

I'm planning on building a cube and want to double sleeve the cards as they represent quite some value. I have done this before with little success as I seem to get a little air inside every sleeve so when I stack the cards for a deck they just slide over. I can't even stack 20 cards without them sliding. I have used KMC Perfect fit and regular Ultra Pro sleeves. I put a card into a perfect fit upside down (so the sleeve opening is at the bottom of the card) and then put it normally into the ultra Pro. Has anyone had similar experiences? What am I doing wrong?

it a known issue, unfortunately.I have the same problem with my KMC Perfect Fits + KMC Purples. besides the sleeves being extremely slippery, it takes a lot effort to get the air out of the sleeves. I stuck in my rook case very tightly to try to get out. It did an "okay" job. But once in awhile I have to do it again to get the air out.

Doing them in piles of 5-10, lay them on a flat surface and press down on them, it will get the air out.

If you just squeeze the stack all the air will come out fairly easily.__________________ Ebay problems? File a claim, leave a neg, buy on MOTL.Wanted: Russian foil Niv-Mizzet Russian foil Ob Nixilis

Why not use proxies. We use alter art proxies in our cube.

meh, some of us care about how our cube looks? and can afford the cards? I've considered double sleeving. Post how it turns out and what sort of thickness it adds overall. I might end up doing that when I resleeve my cube.

Why not just put them in sleeves and then in top loaders, if you're so worried about the cards? Yeah, it will be huge, but they'll be protected. We used to do that with our Star Trek decks. Thanks, Jazaray

it would be unmanageable in toploaders. Currently I use a standard white 1000 count card box to hold my cube. Having to carry around multiple boxes... or shuffle 500-700 cards all in top loaders seems daunting.

wow...paranoid much? The only reason i could imagine to double sleeve is if you do all your cube drafting drunk off your ass and just cannot keep from spilling copious amounts of liquid on it all the damn time...

It keeps dirt out of the tops of your sleeves. It's a perfectly valid thing to do if you have the time, and want to protect your cards.__________________ Ebay problems? File a claim, leave a neg, buy on MOTL.Wanted: Russian foil Niv-Mizzet Russian foil Ob Nixilis

I totally understand where caquaa is coming from. Ive seen pictures of your cube, and its not just a bunch of stock cards, he has some pimp in there to. I would totally doublesleeve my cube, if i had half the time invested in it like him. Especially since other people will be handling your cards. I would rather be safe then sorry.

double sleeving the cube is totally worth it, I once spilled coke on my entire cube while sorting it..thanks god for double sleeves? The air problem is a bit annoying but simply squeeze out air out of each individual sleeves should do the trick (well it worked for me) and just squeeze your card as a stack afterwards as well. It makes the initial sleeving process longer but is sort of fun as well. caquaa u should definitely double sleeve your cube. In terms of the increase in size my cube is 700 cards with additional 150 basics all double sleeved which manages to just fit into a standard 1000 and 500 boxes. Carrying 2 boxes isnt that bad once you get used to it really.

+1 When you are playing with cards worth hundreds of dollars, this would seem like a foregone conclusion. They aren't even necessarily in risk, I just feel the need to protect an investment.

I use KMC Perfect and KMC dark blue matte. After you have all your cards in the perfect fit, my typical strategy for getting them into the regular sleeve is to insert it a bit then turn the card upside down. Using something with a bit of cushion, pillow etc, I will slide the KMC matte down over it. (yes like a condom) This allows for several things, one it prevents the Perfect fit if its a touch loose from sliding off when putting it in the regular sleeves. Two it applied gentle pressure along the entire top part of the card so that you dont risk making thumb indentation in one spot. Once I have the card inserted in the regular sleeve and it is flush with the top of the card there is usually a pillowing effect of air trapped in there. Simply lay it flat and run your index finger along it till you push the air out. Alternatively I take 3-4 card stacked up and apply flat even pressure, this achieves the same results. After that, I typically open the sleeve a little and gently push the card down so that it goes all the way to the bottom leaving about a 1/10th of an inch gap at the top. Edit: yes your deck will slide around a bit with new sleeves, after they scuff up a bit they wont do this anymore.

Hasn't anyone ever told you that you're not supposed to double up the protection?
