I'm in the process of building my first EDH deck and I was wondering, what is some CHEAP (money-wise cheap) Staple cards that people use for EDH?Also is Kaervek the Merciless a good General? or do you think he costs too much? If so what do you think is a good General for a Red/Black EDH deck? Also what Red/Black Cards do you think would be good for EDH? (Lands too) I dont really want people to recommend super expensive ($$$) cards, as Im only building this deck for Casual/multi-player games. (Sorry if this post is in the wrong place) Thanks everyone!

I think you'll get hated on too much if you use Kaervek. If you have access to some goblin cards, then Wort, Boggart Auntie might do the trick.

Kaervek will get you no love from the table. Neither would the other RB general I like though...Tsabo.There are many primers out there on starting EDH to help you along. Typically, every deck I run starts out with Sol Ring, Top, and Mana Vault. In black, Demonic tutor and Damnation are auto-includes. Decree of Pain isn't bad either. Phyrexian Arena is cheap and great card draw. What red cards go in a deck almost always depend on what it's trying to accomplish. I mean, Greater Gargadon, Wheel of Fortune, and Kiki-Jiki are pretty much always going into my decks that run red. You can also consider things like Ruination, Shattering Pulse/Spree, and any good gold cards in the combination (terminate). In RB, you'll need some sweepers to take care of enchantments. Disk/O-Stone/All is Dust are usually my go to choices, but you don't necessarily need all 3. For lands, you'll probably want to get as many as you can that tap for both. You don't necessarily need Badlands, but getting a Blood Crypt and Bloostained Mire in there wouldn't hurt. Graven Cairns, Akoum Refuge...there's plenty of lesser BR dual lands to fit in. Cabal Coffers and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth wouldn't hurt either. Just run expiedition map also to get some consistency with getting the other half. Most of the Kaervek lists I've brainstormed have involved keeping the board clean so people have to cast spells. Consider running cards that protect the general, like Lightning Greaves. __________________ Wisconsin - smells like dairy air!

Running Kaervek is like painting a target that says "Hi, kill me please" on your forehead. I ran Kaervek as a creature in a BRU deck and whenever I played him I died not long after. People hate the guy. He's also 7 mana, making him slow to cast and difficult to recast considering how fast/often he dies. I'm not a fan of 7-mana generals, they just get too expensive to recast really quickly. As for other generals, someone else suggested Wort and I have seen an amazingly resilient (and budget!) goblin deck built around her that looked super fun to play. You could also try running Malfegor as with black you have any number of ways to get dudes back from your graveyard. The cheapest general mana cost wise is Lyzolda and I could see her being really interesting to play with token generators from RoE, which are mostly common, along with Breeding Pit/Goblin Assault. Running Coffers and Urborg will allow you access to all the mana you would need to make that combo work right.

Lyzolda actually sounds really fun. You can add in Gravepact/Butcher of Malakir along with token generators. Goblin Assault, Bitterblossom and Breeding Pit would be the first choices. You can also make good use of steal creature effects with her, even if the creatures are off-color. __________________ Wisconsin - smells like dairy air!

Oh man, I never even considered the shenanigans you could pull off with all the Threaten variants now in circulation. I'm very tempted to try and build this deck myself as it would run quite differently than any of the decks I currently play. quote: Originally posted by hilikuS: Tsabo Tavoc.
As Iccarus posted: quote: Originally posted by iccarus: Kaervek will get you no love from the table. Neither would the other RB general I like though...Tsabo.
Tsabo makes you an obvious target. I would definitely avoid running it as a general, though unlike Kaervek I would happily main deck it. quote: Originally posted by iccarus: There are many primers out there on starting EDH to help you along. Speaking of Primers, Bennie Smith recently ran a pair of articles on budget starter kits for EDH: http://www.starcitygames.com/magic/multiplayer/19952_You_Lika_The_Juice_EDH_Starter_Kits.html . His RB general ends up being Wort and I would be willing to bet you can actually pick up most of the cards he mentions for less than he quotes. Moggcatcher looks insane and Siege-Gang Commander will come down in price fairly soon as well.
