If you had a time machine and $1000, what would be the best way to spend it on Magic cards? I was inspired to ask this by the recent In Contention podcast.I remember in 2003 P3K boosters were 99 cents at Yellow Submarine in Tokyo-- now $40-50. Lion's Eye Diamond used to be a $0.50 crap rare-- now $35-45. What do you guys think is the most efficient way to spend that grand?

Probably Summer Magic if you wanted the most profit.Snatching up 1000$ worth of Goyfs when they were 3$ apiece would be a pretty nice investment, certainly easier to do than spending 1000$ on duals and P9 way back when. __________________ (Humans) are stubborn, self-destructive conformists. Well my first thought would be to take my 1,000 and go invest in apple/microsoft then wait for just the right time to sell it off and buy wizards of the cost before hasbro got thier hands on the game. I dont feel like doing the math on this to see if it would really work.

i belive big tech companies like msft and cisco, on 1k investments only net you out like a million, not to mention its totally paper money.

Would go back in time to when I first started playing, give myself $1000 and tell me to not to play Magic.Actually I would probably just pick up a bunch of weird stuff at its lowest price.

Depends on how cheap "cheap" really is...

It didn't take long or Moxes and Lotus to start gaining some value, but I do remember watching people tear up Moxes, Lotus, and *gasp* Shivan Dragon's in Ironman games and not really care because they had jobs and not allowances =p.

I guess the best is, go back to the time and location where the Summer cases were being sold. With $1000, you can buy around 2 cases of Summer MTG. Imagine you have 2 sealed cases of Summer Magic. You can ask BGS for a bulk rate on grading 6480 cards. Quite sure they can give you a $5-10/card rate. Then market them as "Best chance ever of getting complete BGS 9 Summer Magic". At $100/basic land (saw someone offering to buy summer lands at $100 on the forum), the basic lands are already $43200. Imagine if they are BGS 9 graded.......

Just saw on feebay that Summer booster packs go for $4000-6000 each. 2 sealed case will be $1.73m (4000 per pack)- $2.59m (6000 per pack). Of course, finding a buyer with that kind of money will be a challenge. And if people know there are 2 sealed Summer case out there, the booster pack probably wont be worth 4000-6000 each. But it gives you an idea of how 2 sealed Summer case will be worth now....

How about stealing as many cases of Summer Magic as you can and using the $1000 on bail?

just find a bunch of stuff that was at one point worth very little, and eventually went way up...Get Flash for .10, sell for 8.00 Get LED for .50, sell for 30.00 or whatever its at... Get Goyf at 3.00, sell at 60.00 eventually As for older stuff, as the power raised in value early, Tabernacle and Bazaar didn't... Ya know, maybe the best route for spending it on magic would be to buy stock in the company, I don't know how all that stuff works, but WOTC eventually sold to Hasbro right? Isn't that a time to sell in stocks? ....dunno

Its fun to speculate on this stuff, but it is even more fun when some of us did this for real

Yeah I know what you mean, Marciano 315 tried it. but it didn't go exacly the way he wanted it to. who remembers: "40 Eye of Ugin and 4 foil Eye of Ugin for Black Lotus? --lol you'll see when these go for 50 bucks a piece in a couple months, you're just jealous. !"

Agreed. If you wanted to go back in time and invest you do so in something like Coca-Cola, or McDonald's. If you invested 1K in CC back in the early 20th century you'd have enough money to outright buy WOTC off Hasbro right now.

You're all wrong - I'd go back and buy the island of Manhattan and still have $950 left over! __________________ http://classic.magictraders.com/ubb/Forum12/HTML/016901.html

Sell the time machine for trillions, then buy whatever you want. __________________ 40 Eye of Ugin and 4 foil Eye of Ugin for Black Lotus!?"lol you'll see when these go for 50 bucks a piece in a couple months, you're just jealous. !" - Marciano 315 03/17/2010

Well just don't sell it to Biff Tannen...he's an unscrupulous character. __________________ http://classic.magictraders.com/ubb/Forum12/HTML/016901.html

Only problem there is that you'd have to find some insanely old bills. Showing up with modern money to pay for things back then would throw up flags.

Unmarked Gold, problem solved. Hell go back in time buy more gold, come back to present, do whatever you'd like.Magic wise, Wastelands seem good, uncommon + worth 20+ now, gofys of course, P3K, hell Portal in general. There are loads of cards that started as crap and went up, just pick 1k worth and profit. __________________ I shall have the souls of all who defy me. "Lord Crovax"

I'd go back to 1998 and buy boxes of Stronghold which had no foils, rares, or uncommons but seriously within reason I'd buy as many dual lands and Force of Wills for $10 or less at that given point in time.

I'd buy lottery tickets after remembering the known results. Winning millions of dollars twice per week seems like a great investment.

ya, that's why the title of the post wants to know what you would spend money on in magic...
