I'm not going to give the name of the shop, but a comic book / gaming shop near Miami had a prerelease and were charging $25 yet didn't offer prize support...they said they were keeping the phyrexian/mirran packs for future events. Is this typical? I went to a shop in Boca and another in West Palm, both offered great prize support! Should i notify wizards about the "rogue" shop keeping the packs?

I'm 90% sure that prize support is reccomended, but isn't required. The $25 covers ~6 packs plus tax, so there isn't any requirement for prizes. If it were $30 that would be something different. You did get at least the promo, right?__________________ send ref checks, paypal payment or any questions to the email in my profile! Serra Angel Count: 226 Nightmare Count: 95

I dunno... pretty sure the prize support is provided by Wizards AND mandated at 2 packs per entrant.

This is correct. Suggest you contact wizards about it. __________________ "He fights you not because you have wronged him, but because you are there."[16:17] <@BrassMan> what do you need new tech for? [16:18] <@BrassMan> gush is unrestricted [19:01] <nderEvo> you can delete yourself

I am pretty sure that the payout was dictated by Wizards for the product they provided. So no, I don't think they could keep it.

2 packs per entrant, as in to make up the prize packs? I'm accustomed to 1.5 packs per person for prizes in standard, but last prerelease there definitely wasn't more than a pack or 1.1 per person. I'm pretty sure there weren't like 60-70 prize packs handed out yesterday. Does it depend on number of entrants, as opposed to be a set amount, like 35 prize packs?Got both promos though. Edit: Got both promos cause one for entering, then everyone who didn't place and get packs for prizes got the promo from the other faction. Either way, i'd be interested in knowing where the proof would be, cause this is the same shop that let someone play for a guy who decided to quit halfway through. Someone was late but decided to stay and watch. Another guy quit, so the watcher took his place with his own deck and kept the other guy's record, didn't pay the shop to enter or reimburse the other guy. It always seemed suspect that it would be allowed in a sanctioned tourny so i'm doubly suspicious now :s

For events like these, where Wizards provides some free product for support, the product is supposed to be given away. So in essence this is the minimum that should be given away and is required. However according to the TO in my area there is nothing stopping the TO, other then greed, to increase the amount of prize support out of their own pockets. As for other events where Wizards doesn't provide support then Wizards offers a set of recommendations but the TO doesn't have to give anything if they choose not to. I would send a message to Wizards. This appears to be a violation of their policies.

Um, yeah...that's not even close to being allowed. Not sure why anyone would think that it was.

yes, definitely report the rogue store.. that's absolutely sketchy to the extreme.. the stores should run PRs properly, or you dont run PRs in the future.. © __________________ Since it is obviously inconceivable that all religions can be right, the most reasonable conclusion is that they are all wrong. -Christopher HitchensReligion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful. -Seneca the Younger

The intentions by wizards is that they provide product to be used as prize support. They mandate 2 packs per person, but shops often let more people enter then they have prize support for and use an IOU system. If they didn't even give out the basic product that wizard gave them for free, wizards needs to be notified. I'd recommend giving them a call just so you can get more then a canned response.

Wow, we gave out nearly 7.5 boxes of product and vouchers for IOUs...never once did I think to not give product, do stores not want future business?

worst suggestion of the thread. I've done w/o a magic store, its fine. Its nicer having a store, but not one that screws you over.

Please keep us updated. I would like to know how this turns out. I have a local store that I suspect to be doing something similar.

$40 for a Pre-Release? That's a rip-off no matter what. __________________ MOTL's Most Likely to Play in the Pro Tour - 2007, 2008, and 2009 (My Nationals) Cracking the Top 100 Ref Count - 4/1/10 (Currently #72 - #5 in new York)

FNM promos are 1 for first, 1 for second, and the last two are supposed to be randomly determined. For pre release events, wizards gives free booster boxes to the store specifically for giving out at the pre release. As a TO you must put 2 prize packs per person from the free product from wizards into the prize pool for the main event, no more, no less.

Maybe it's currency exchange. Didn't even think of foreign countries when I said that. __________________ MOTL's Most Likely to Play in the Pro Tour - 2007, 2008, and 2009 (My Nationals) Cracking the Top 100 Ref Count - 4/1/10 (Currently #72 - #5 in new York)

i gave out 2 packs per player like we are supposed to. You also get the promo faction card based on what faction you pick in the tourny. You can also buy more product (limited though) for other events like booster draft and more prize support. I did not give out any IOU's at all and gave more product after i ran out of my 2 boxes of free support *forgot to add in that there was poison dice to give out and some faction cardboxes also. I will give out more during the release
