Thinking about piecing together a mask/nought deck.Is mask still viable? I'm trying to find up to date errata on how mask works and I seem to be at a loss. Text (ABU+errata): {X}: You may put a creature card with converted mana cost X or less from your hand onto the battlefield face down as a 0/1 creature. Put X mask counters on that creature. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery. The creature's controller may turn the creature face up any time he or she could cast an instant by removing all mask counters from it. This effect ends if the creature is turned face up. [Oracle 2009/07/08] That's the latest I could find. Does this mean the creature can be countered? Can anyone shed light on how this works exactly?

The mask could be countered, but the dreadnought couldn't.

First, you need to use the up to date oracle text. Gatherer (gatherer.wizards.com) is your friend for this. Currently, mask is worded as such:X: You may choose a creature card in your hand whose mana cost could be paid by some amount of, or all of, the mana you spent on X. If you do, you may cast that card face down as a 2/2 creature spell without paying its mana cost. If the creature that spell becomes as it resolves has not been turned face up and would assign or deal damage, be dealt damage, or become tapped, instead it's turned face up and assigns or deals damage, is dealt damage, or becomes tapped. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery. Read that a few times, then we'll figure out how to explain it. __________________ "He fights you not because you have wronged him, but because you are there."[16:17] <@BrassMan> what do you need new tech for? I'm still somewhat at a loss. The way it reads to me, I can cast a creature from my hand as a 2/2 "morphed" version for any amount of mana that would normally be used to cast the creature. Therefore, the creature can still be countered. Now if that's right, I'm still confused about the mana part...how much do I HAVE to pay when casting the masked creature? Could we just use hypnotic specter as an example?

With hypnotic specter, you can pay any amount of mana that countain at least 1BB. You can pay 1BB, WWUUBBGGRR, etc. With the current oracle reading, creatures you play can be countered as you play them. Edit: this contradicts with what scotty said.
