Over about the past 8 to 10 years I've mainly been collecting Magic instead of building many decks, but I'm starting to get back into playing more games and building decks. It used to be that I didn't have a lot of cards and so it was easy to just comb through my collection each time I wanted to build a deck. This doesn't work any more and I need some better ideas on how to split my collection so that I can build decks and not go insane.

I've moved to largely splitting out the cards that I build decks from and storing them separately. Then I have another box for my decks, and then a holding box for decks that I'm taking apart or cards that need to get sorted back in. I'm finding that storing deck-building cards in boxes is not ideal, as it's hard to really see what you have.

Do you keep a separate collection of cards for different formats? Do you store your cards in boxes or binders? Do you have an inventory system so that you actually know how many of a given card you have? Do you just proxy cards while building decks and then only get the cards once you're pretty sure of a deck list? Let me know what works for you as I'd love some new ideas.

I pretty much figure out what I want to play and then as I get the cards I put them in a separate section of a monster binder until I get pretty much all of it and then sleeve it.

I have a T2 monster binder and another monster binder for non T2 stuff. I myself have a lot of sorting issues, mostly because I'm lazy (and have 4 kids so time is scarce) For the most part I do know how many of a certain card I have and where it is. For the most part, lol.

I have a lot of the long 800ct white boxes and seperate my cards by color and format (Standard, Extended, Eternal). And then in the Standard and Extended boxes, they're separated by set. Not the eternal boxes though, too many different sets lol.

My personal collection is inventoried, and in binders by rarity, then by color. I'm likely going to switch to ordering by sets soon, for my sanity's sake.

Whenever I have cards for a deck, I stick them in/on/under an ever size-changing pile on my desk, in front of my monitor.

The pile is 43 cards at the moment, for 4 decks I'm working on.

Otherwise, I used to use a page of 3x3, but I'm short on those (and need to go buy two or three packs.)

I once stuck an entire EDH deck; and the 40 some non-basic lands that went into it, into a binder of 3x3s...easy to trade EDH decks that way.

i keep an excel sheet of decklists along with a master sheet of all my decks. That way when I need something I can simply move it in or print out a list of what I have and need in case i want to trade at a shop.

It makes it simple because as soon as you get a card your list tells you which deckbox it goes into.

I only have cards that I use for decks or sell. I have about 8 decks I built + 1 Monster binder for the customization. It's not easy to think what is playable at first, but you've got to make a cut

What a great system. I'm going to do this next time that I'm home sick from work, or maybe start plugging away a couple nights a week until I'm done. I did something similar when I was collecting one of every card, and I'm not sure why I didn't think of applying it to decks too. Even if I just had a list of cards that are in decks or are needed for decks, that would be a huge improvement.

I put every set into its own binder, then a playset of each card goes in one pocket. Then the excess cards get put in 800 ct white boxes by set and sold off on ebay when ever they get full.

This works pretty well since I usually only have 2-4 decks at any one time and then its usually 2 std and 1 vintage or legacy deck.

Only down side is this does take up a heck of a lot of room but I'm lucky enough to have the whole house to myself so natually my cards have their very own room.

For stuff I know I'm keeping, I have a three row box with everything sorted by block from OTJ forward. Anything before that is small enough to go go together in one lump. I'm pretty ruthless about what goes into the box at it gets purged when sets rotate. Somewhat easier to do since the only decks I build are for EDH. I no longer bother with 60 card formats.

I then have a binder for the more valuable staples (duals, fetches, random goodies).

I put my playable cards that arent already in decks in a binder. The rest are sorted by rarity and color.
The excel sheet method sounds great but I don't have the time.

Proxy up the deck, putting everything in sleeves. As I get cards, the proxy gets replaced. This way you can playtest while you wait to get the cards, or you can realize the deck doesn't work and not build it.

I usually make a list of all the cards I want in the deck, then I have a separate binder for decks, and after I have all the cards for it, sleeve it, and if the deck is trash, just de-sleeve the cards and start over lol

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Since I was home sick today I now have my 22 completed decks typed up in a Google Docs spreadsheet. Now I'm trying to figure out how to write a script that will automatically create a trade list based on the entries that I've marked as proxied, and also build a master inventory of all of the cards in the decks. Once I get those items done I'll be in pretty good shape.

Next I need to enter the four decks that I'm working on building and get some binders. Collecting cards for decks in a binder will be a great help, as I won't accidentally take the cards for a different deck or merge my prototype with another stack of cards by accident. Piles of cards have many drawbacks.

Like having to ask yourself where that pile of not-so-cheap cards went after a few weeks of stagnated trading/deck building.

You should also print off a deck list, and then cross off the cards you have for the deck, I found that makes building decks (at least EDH decks) alot easier, and less likely to trade for something you already have if you can just quickly and visually check a list. ( I traded for 1 single card... 5 times...because I kept forgetting I already traded for it >_< )
