Since I started playing during the urza block...I've always heard people say that a friend of a friend of theirs knows someone who knows someone else who went into a retail store and found a booster box of arabian nights or beta for retail price. After hearing those stories I've always dreamed of finding a place that has something like that but don't know that the value has greatly increased. Has anyone have a similar story or heard of someone getting old cards for retail price?

Not in this day and age. Maybe 10-15 years ago those stories had a chance of being a little more true. But think about it, As years go by the odds someone who knew the value of those cards (or the old man running the shop looked it up) hit 100%Your best bet now is maybe finding some old foils or Asian cards stuffed away somewhere that are worth a bunch now (how I got my Korean smokestack)

Well, about 5-6 years ago I went to a craigslist advertised storage sale and the guy had some old baseball packs as well as mtg packs for like .25 - .50 cents (FE, Exodus, Tempest) and found out he had loads of Exodus, Saga, Tempest, Legacy booster boxes and some portal 1 starters sealed boxes in storage. It wasn't super cheap, but I got 40 boxes (mostly Exodus) for less than $70 bucks each.Nothing like the super old stuff, but I was happy.

My friend found 2 Imperial Seals looking through a commons box at a card shop...but at the time they were worthless and he just gave them to some kid.

I'm always holding out hope I'd find something like this on a flea market. Anything I've ever collected in my life I've found on a flea market except for magic cards. (meaning big money stuff for next to nothing)

My best story was buying some bulk commons off someone and they threw in a stack of random starter/portal cards and there was a play set of of grim tutors in it. Not as good as finding the seals but well worth what I paid for the bulk. I also stop at almost every yardsale I see hoping to get lucky but in the past 10 or so years I've never seen a single magic card at a yardsale. Tons and Tons of crappy baseball cards but no magic cards.

I occasinaly find them on craigslist, but more of then not, not worth the 10 minutes of gas to get to them, and the last guy wanted $200 for his legions->kamigawa collection, with no rares. __________________ Joz - can we ban Leshrac for not fixing the Chrome PM issue?Gunslinga - If I thought it would help, and if I could, I would.

There are some good collections on craigslist. Just tell them to send pix or a list before going. No pix/list, no go. Oh, and craigslist is a great way to dump useless commons. Very easy to move 1000/$10 and junk rares at quarters.

I reguraly buy collections, and every now and then the free 'bulk' that comes with it is actually made up of loads of money commons and uncommons. Or Time Spirals in the binder with crap rares. The best find last year was an alternate art foil Ertai in a random foils stack. __________________ Swamps suck. Mountains rock!

Just got a collection recently at a garage sale for $3. Got a Rishadan Port and a few other goodies. It was well worth it.

CL is getting pretty dried up to be honest. Most people expect full retail when selling their stuff. It is a good place to dump cheap stuff though (1000/$10 commons).I have only went to 1 garage sale that I would say was worth the time. Got a open CE edition set (all there) for $100. It was a steal of a deal IMHO.

This sort of thing sorta happens still... just rarely and typically not w/ sealed product. One example is someone had an ultra pro mox promo play mat and listed it on ebay very poorly. Someone outbid me and got it for 10.50 + shipping. They now have it listed on ebay at $250. Sometimes people just don't know what they have and it can go cheap. Still kicking myself for cooking instead of watching the auction more closely.
