I'm new to MTGO (did the free play for a couple days and just started an account yesterday). Looks like it may take some time before I am fast on the UI and have enough virtual cards to really compete. Meanwhile, do you know if it is possible to set up 'private' booster drafts there, just with my friends that are on the same experience level as me (obviously prize situation would be different, but is functionality available for us to do our own draft)? Same question with Sealed Deck play (keeping them separate from the rest of your cards until done).

One other MTGO question -- I experienced a couple times where my opponent disconnected during the game and didn't come back within a couple minutes. Is there a way to conclude the game without conceding myself or having to sit and wait for the 30 minute timer to expire?

Sorry for the noob questions!

No. If you want to play with people on the same level as you, you should join a queue with people of the relative same skill level as you. The 8-4 queues are the highest and have the most risk/reward. On the other end, the Swiss queues have the lowest risk/reward. So, very competitive, skilled players tend to populate the 8-4 drafts. On the other hand, the Swiss queues tend to attract more casual drafters who don't want to be kicked out of the draft after losing the first round.

Wizards is likely to be very wary of having something like a private draft because of something you may not be aware of, if you are relatively new to MTGO. Every month or so, there is a Magic Online Championship and to even enter the tournament, you need to qualify with enough points. You get points for going undefeated in drafts or doing well in other daily events. So, it's conceivable that someone, working with a team, could simply create a bunch of drafts with his friends and they all concede to him (but play out the rest of the matches) until the guy gets 45+ points and qualifies for the championship series with a few byes in the tournament.

Constructed Magic games are meant by Wizards to be the casual playground if you just want to play games with your friends. You can create a Standard, Extended, etc. game to play with people you invite.

There really isn't. I suggest that you:

1) Send a message to your opponent to confirm he's really not there.

2) After several minutes (3-4) log out of MTGO and log back in. There is a known glitch that sometimes it appears as if your opponent is idle and doing nothing while his clock ticks down, when in fact it is actually YOU who isn't doing anything. So, both of you could be waiting for the other to do something and if it's actually you, you will get a loss.

3) Find something else to do on your computer (watch a movie, browse MOTL) and check back FREQUENTLY (every few minutes) to see if your opponent comes back.

Although, you shouldn't have to wait 30 minutes. After 10 minutes of being AFK, the tournament system will award you a win.

For "private" drafts, you can go to the casual draft room, set up a queue, and if you all join quickly (it REQUIRES 8 people) you have a private draft! There are no prizes though, and im not sure how they'd do pairings. If you wanna do it using the actual queues on MTGO, you'd all have to be real quick getting into the one you want I guess.

if you are your opponent does not take an action with in a 10-12 minute time frame. That person looses the game and is kicked out of the event. So you don't have to wait the full time but about a 3rd of the time. and the causal drafts are the only way to do some kinda of private draft. I have been in there a lot the last 2 weeks and have never seen one fire. I think i was the only person trying to join them
