Today I casual drafted in a store and I was tied in record with another player but I beat him in the draft so isn't it a generally accepted ruling that I get to pick the card before him? He told me that we need to roll for card picking position but I think he's wrong since there are only 2 of us who are tied and we played each other and I beat him; therefore I should win in the tie breaker. Am I right?

Since the standard draft is to keep what you draft, it's whatever your house rules are if you draft out the rares.

As one of the older players, I know that I was right according to the original house rules but the dude was a bit newer to the store (he has been playing there for a little bit less than 2 years) and he said that they have been abiding to the rolling dice policy for those times. What I assume is that, of all those times, he haven't been in a draft in which there are only 2 people with the same record and have played each other. Even the store manager agree with me about the house rule.

He may have but we have never used opponent's record as a tie breaker for casual draft.

This is why non-standard rules need to be explained and agreed-upon beforehand.

this is what tie breakers are. I don't see how you're surprised that he didn't want to use a method that favored you. I am surprised that neither of you suggested using real tie breakers. That's what we do for our casual drafts because we don't make up rules as we go ;p

We do use opponents records in real tournament situation but in casual draft we can't just take out a calculator everytime we draft and do those calculations.

In every casual draft I've played, beating someone means you pick ahead of them, unless you are doing some complicated swiss thing with multiple drafts. That said, this guy must've really wanted to pick a certain card to argue over it. The fact an argument existed means someone was being a dick. Still, in every casual draft I've played 'rare draft' at the end, we also make sure everyone understands the rules before we even open a pack. Usually it's among friends.
