I found this link when looking through some old magic newsgroup nostalgia. I thought some others might find it interesting.

https://groups.google.com/d/topic/rec.games.deckmaster/Z7SJApttbjg/discussion

It's a computer generated price list that was aggregated from actual sale offers and auction listings at the time, so it should be way more accurate than any published price guide at the time.

Highlights include black Lotus under $40 and leviathan outranks 3 out of the 5 moxes. Here's the top 30 sorted by price.

code:

1. black lotus 39.53
2. forcefield 32.84
3. gauntlet of might 30.2
4. mox sapphire 28.25
5. mox ruby 27.58
6. leviathan 27.44
7. time twister 26.86
8. mox pearl 26.42
9. mox emerald 26.27
10. mox jet 24.65
11. nicol bolas 24.54
12. chaos orb 21.88
13. palladia mors 21.69
14. vaevictis asmadi 21.64
15. lich 21.21
16. time walk 20.44
17. natural selection 18.81
18. two headed giant of foriys 18.55
19. arcades sabboth 18.31
20. guardian beast 17.94
21. time vault 17.02
22. ancestral recall 16.82
23. cyclopean tomb 16.49
24. chromium 16.29
25. illusionary mask 16.16
26. blaze of glory 16.07
27. raging river 16.02
28. ali from cairo 14.87

The best part was the complaining how prices that were getting so high were going to ruin the game, and if WotC didn't reprint some of the "super expensive" cards the game would simply die.

Magic the Gathering: on its deathbed since 1994.

Take it easy,
Jared

Juzam was out when that list was made.

Yes, Juzam was $7 at that time, library was 7.50, bazaar was under 5.

Yea I recall my friend trading his shivan dragon and a clone (both revised) for a Juzam then a few months later the price spiked.

Magic was dying even before it was first printed and even before it was ever even thought up. Just like D&D, video games, and the United States.

Cool thread. The good old days when we (our group) laughed at a member for buying an NM Alpha Lotus for $100...

Still got Scrye #2 which has the best article, something like "How to buy/trade cards online".

I'll have to see if I can get an image of it online, but it talks about waiting 2 weeks for checks to clear! That part sticks out in my mind something fierce.

.02,
Jesse

Shivan's and clones were expensive back in the day. I remeber Shivan's being valued at $20 a pop at some point.

The latest "discussion" on the spoiled RTR guild mechanics are quite amusing. I really enjoy reading the posters that are willing to bet their unborn children that the Unleash mechanic is a crappy ability that only deals with P/T and won't end up being a mechanic that enables Modal creatures, i.e. a 2/2 with a shock EtB ability, or unleshed it's a 3/3 with haste.

Oh god. Check out the argument about the Commander's Arsenal. That's a train wreck.
