Also, with the Alpha hoarders, how many of those rares were printed vs. how many even exist today? I don't know the numbers, perhaps someone could weigh in on how many of each alpha rare was printed. Twenty years later I think it is safe to assume at least a third of those are gone. Consider how many of those that may have had Alpha cards threw them out when they had lost interest and cleaned up their dorm, moved out of mom's house, had a house fire, car wreck with cards in the trunk that were destroyed, flood damage, etc...My head is telling me that something like 10 thousand of each alpha rare was printed (though it might be just 8000). Let's assume that only 5000 still exist and the Animate Wall guy has 1200... that's a legitimate chunk!

10 thousand? How about a tenth of that and you're close to the real number.

There was 1100 of each alpha rare printed.Alot of the collectors of single alpha rares started with a competition on magiclibrarities. They were going for 5% of the print run (55) of the rare.

It's impossible to say. You have to consider that a card exists in one of the following possible states:1) Unopened. Probably very few Alphas like this, but there are certainly a handful that are still in their starter decks/packs. 2) Destroyed. Fire, garbage, whatever. 3) Stashed and forgotten in a closet. Effectively the same as destroyed, only someone will probably find them in 60 years like they do with old baseball cards. 4) In collections. This is different from number 3 in that the owners are aware of them, and while they may not know the precise value, know they want to hang onto them. Known, but off market. 5) Available on the market. Ebay, Troll and Toad, local shops, etc. The problem is, you could only ever know some of #5 and a small portion of #4. The rest are all random; you couldn't even make an educated guess on them. For example, I take note of all the Alpha Zombie Masters that sell on ebay, I check the population reports for things like PSA and BGS, I'm aware of what vendors have for sale, and I pay attention to who around here has them in their collections. If I believe what everyone actually has what they've claimed, I can account for a little more than 8% of them. That's it. The remaining 92% is completely unknowable. I assume most of it is in collections, but I really have nothing on which to base that.

This thread is making me feel concerned...as I have an expensive collection. Maybe a fire safe would be a good idea...Oh and the magic librarities link for those who care: http://www.magiclibrarities.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5371 The real question, is what % of dragon population do I own :P http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v244/implode311/Dragon%20Album/?start=all

Does it really have to be a safe though? It's not like anyone is going to steal it. Surely there are fire-proof boxes (say made out of asbestos) available somewhere? I'm sure it would work out cheaper than a safe. Then just pop your cards in there and voila!

Cards being targeted is not as uncommon as you might think. I've heard accounts of burglaries where cards were stolen on this website. NOT just from store fronts, but actual houses. Also from cars.

Cool! Any chance you'll part with the other 2? I keep higher end stuff in one of these. Also is nice because if someone breaks in, it's a little more of a pain to make off with a locked box than just a handful of cards. I also keep the box and key hidden in different parts of the house.

I use the same safe for stuff I access often but is valuable and hard to find (t1 decks, beta, Russian foils, etc) and a safe deposit box for collectables (summer, graded stuff). My downstairs neighbors like the pot so I always fear a fire. I like knowing my cards will be safe when I'm not home. If I am home, the safe has a handle so it goes in one hand and my dtr goes in the other as we run out
