I think I've messaged about 20+ different members for trades, and I've only successfully traded twice, with two more pending. Some of the higher-ref members won't even respond to you once they see you have less than 20 refs, and I can kind of understand it from their point of view; why bother trading with someone with <10 trades when you can get the same trade with someone with 100+ refs? It would be nice though if they would respond with a simple "No." From my experience, most do not offer that courtesy, even when they explicitly they would in their thread. For example, I've tried e-mailing Frankenskid (thread said specifically to e-mail, as he/she ignores PMs and posts) a couple of times about a trade, but never heard back, even though I know the user is active (updated list only a few days ago), and ironically, the user's rule 8 is about courtesy. There's no other way around it but to trade more and build up refs, and I agree with the others that if you're decking something that you do not want to part with, don't include it on your list, but if you see something that you REALLY want, you can make that offer.
Everyone has to understand that the internet allows people to not give a **** and be a sociopath. Too many people are looking for a bargain and to one up there fellow traders. I have traded with a few good people who are in it for the enjoyment of receiving the cards they are looking for, but too many are just looking to get an edge on the next guy.

What you did wrong was start trading on MOTL 5 years too late. This use to be a nice place to get cards you need, but as some other people have stated, too many people think they are dealers/or are dealers who own and operate a website. TnT, SCG, ChannelFB...they are all here in some form or another, not to mention your run of the mill idiots who think they are dealers. If the $$'s match it use to b a go on a lot of trades if both parties had the cards they were recieving/sending in their have/want sections of their lists. Now soo many people clutter and screw up the trade match engine with "I want XxForce of Will, Xx Snapcaster Mage, etc etc...." Then their haves are all cards that are "decked" or "hard to get" meaing if the deal ins't grossly in their favor you might as well be talking to the wall. Or "trading up"....etc etc. It's become more of a nightmare and to be honest with you if you can, sell your cards here, and buy what you need here. Every once in a while you will come across a good honest trader who's looking for cards they need and wont gouge you. I understand it can be quite the headache.

I like trading with lower ref members because I know I was like them at one point.__________________ -Schmitty 84th in Refs [291] on MOTL (2 behind gamma_1) 2nd in Refs [291] in OH-IO (70 behind souladvocate) 2nd in Posts [7715] in OH-IO (only 400 behind Val) “If Brad Stevens is the future of coaching in college basketball, the sport is in a good place.” - Rick Pitino

Generally it's safe to avoid people who have the same cards in their want/have lists as they are looking for value. Also lists with excessive rules mean the person is probably a pain in the ass. My trade process usually involves: 1. Find a mutually agreeable source for pricing 2. Make initial trade suggestion 3. State that I'd be open to a counter offer if necessary If I spend more than few mins making a good offer to someone and all I get is a "I'll pass" I usually won't bother wasting my time with them again. But you'll get a lot of those and it just takes persistence.
