I've heard that Edric was banned in this format? Is this true or only for French rules?

That list isn't always up to date. It took them a little while to get griselbrand on there. I don't believe Edric is technically banned at the moment.
However, I think it is more or less appropiate to ban him 1v1 which is what I've seen. I wouldn't be surprised if he is officially banned soon, if not already, but a quick look at mtgcommander.net/rules.php didn't turn anything up, but I didn't look very hard (in the forums that is)

Do you think it's more or less appropriate to ban him in tournament play where people are put into pods of 4?

Edric is banned in 1v1 EDH using the competitive banlist. Because he's an absurd advantage and you can sit behind a counterwall.

Not exactly. He's banned because in order to beat Edric decks, a lot of decks have to run removal that is very specific to the matchup. Yes, 1v1 is already centered heavily on casting and interacting with cheap spells, but one way or the other, Edric has been viewed as a nuissance and "too good." If you're playing EDH the regular way, with more than one opponent, Edric is not banned. If you're playing EDH with only one opponent, Edric is also not banned. It's only if you're using the french ban list when it's banned.

Okay sure. But we really shouldn't be encouraging people to use anything other than the french banlist.

which is purely your opinion. YOU shouldn't be acting like french ban list is the only ban list people use. I haven't found any place in oregon that runs the french list. Most people play EDH as intended as a fun multiplayer format. Edric is fine, there are much more boring things you could be doing. He tends to make games more interactive because creatures tend to attack while hes in play.

Rofflelol. Edric interactive? He spits some terrible 1-drops into play then hides behind a counterwall.

How would you argue that Geist of St. Traft is anymore interactive? Let's move this to the EDH thread since we've already answered the original poster's question.
