My plan is to get a playset of beta birds in the next couple of months. I heard a rumor though, that there a many fake birds in circulation. A dealer told me that these fakes are very well done, printed on a professional printing machine, on the right paper etc., and that they are very hard to spot. They are probably produced in Germany or France in the mid 90s so according to him, the chance to accidentally buy/trade one is greater in europe than in north america. Does anybody heard this rumor before? If it's true how could I distinguish a real bird from a fake one?

sounds like you're referring to dark beta. I have essentially no knowledge about it, but I do recall slinga posting something about it in the TA forums quite some time back. I'm sure there's more info around too.

Yeah, sounds like Dark Beta, so named because they're a shade darker than most cards, much like a dark printing of Beta (which is perfectly normal). Don't know about them having originated in Europe, but Dark Betas are very well done. My best suggestion is to look at the text in the text box. On a real card, the edges of the letters are sharp and crisp, but on the fakes the edges are a bit fuzzy. There are some other details that can help you tell them apart, but that's the easiest I've found. Also, the term Dark Beta is a bit misleading. It is not strictly Beta cards that are faked. There was a thread a while ago here regarding a Dark Beta Candelabra of Tawnos.
