Hi everyone,This is something me and Shadows thought up. I love MOTL but it lacks in this department, tournament/draft reports which I occasionally look up at MTGSalvation or TMD. I love to read reports and it's a good way to see what's working or to pick up some ideas, as I can't enter in too many tournaments and have little time looking up some ideas or a good deck.
I'd like to start up something here too, this is just a pilot to see if anyone else enjoys this and if so, maybe we can get a different section for this, like on the other websites, separated into sections for Legacy, Commander, Draft, Prereleases, etc, etc, all formats.
Let me know what you think, I have another standing ready and I'm entering another budget tournamet Saturday, so I could post more soon if this picks up.
Here goes.
There is a venue I always play at, it's budget Legacy. Basically what they've done is they made a list of all cards sold for 0,50 Euro on 10-15 Dutch magic webshops, and that is the cardpool you're allowed to use. See here:
Site: http://www.janr.nl/
Cardpool: http://www.janr.nl/20121222_Castricum_Budget/allowed_all_colors.htm
From this I build this, I love mill and just had to try it:
4 Haunting Echoes
4 Barter in Blood
4 Curse of the Bloody Tome
4 Recoil
4 Exclude
4 Miscalculation
3 Serum Visions
3 Ponder
2 Echoing Truth
2 Snuff Out
2 Perplex
1 Brainspoil
7 Swamp
7 Island
4 Terramorphic Expanse
2 Halimar Dephts
2 Jwar Isle Refuge
1 Barren Moor
Sideboard:
3 Consume the Meek
4 Flashfreeze
3 Deathmark
3 Annul
1 Echoing Truth
1 Snuff Out
Round 1: B/R Reanimator
Game 1:
I win the toss and go first, keeping an excellent hand with Swamp, Island, Jwar Isle. He doesn't do anything until turn 3 dumping some creatures in his graveyard. I know what he's playing and smile, more stuff in the 'yard is good for Echoes.
Next turn he Exhumes, but I Recoil on his next attack. I keep drawing, countering and Barter in Blooding until the time is ripe for Echoes no.1. His library is decimated and after another Echoes he's finished.
Game 2:
Actually the same as Game 1, but he gets more beats on the board stomping me down to 8 when I stabilize. I Tome and Echoe him silly until I make my playmistake of the year. He has a Flayer of the Hatebound without counter. I can win if I don't do anything, but feel it is too big a threat to leave alone and I Barter him, not knowing the rules to Undying very clear. He kills me on the next turn after he draws his last card. Sigh.
Game 3:
His Reanimator gig starts working and it's a walkover.
0-1
Round 2: Infect
Game 1:
I destroy him utterly after bouncing his 2nd turn attack with a 9/9 infect critter, taking a little poison damage until I get 2 Curse of the Bloody Tome on board and destroying his beasty. I counter all his remaining threats if he gets any and mill him completely with the Tomes.
Game 2:
Not much else here, he gets a creature but no pump, infecting me to 9 counters until I stabilize and 3 Curse of the Bloody Tome finish the job.
1-1
Round 3: Monogreen aggro
Game 1:
He goes T1 mana elf, T2 Leatherback Baloth. I don't get much going and spend the rest of this game thinking of my Flashfreezes and Deathmarks in the SB
Game 2:
He goes T1 Dryad Arbor, T2 2 mana dorks. In turn 4 he gets Leatherback again which I counter and with a Tome some milling starts. Then he comes along with an onslaught of creatures which I can't keep back for long and he kills me with Overrun. Hardly saw the removal I boarded and he casted more than I could counter.
1-2
Round 4: Straight Burn
Game 1:
To put it simply, he has a god hand and burns me to a crisp in 5 turns.
Game 2:
He doesn't have his god hand this time, and I Flashfreeze and bounce him until he stumbles on land due to my Tomes milling it all away. Echoes finishes it up.
Game 3:
Multiple tomes get him within killing range but I don't find my Echoes and he wins the race, barely, with 2 turns for him left.
1-3
Round 5: Monoblack aggro
Game 1:
It's a simple deck he plays, but dangerous. He gets out Black Knights and equips them with something. Arrogant Bloodlord shows up and wraps it up.
Game 2:
I side in Annul and Echoing Truth and it works, the game goes a long way with Recoil and Tomes as he runs out of gas and creatures.
Game 3:
He has the best hand of the day as he claims, and it's over in 5 turns as I don't get my 4th land in time for double Barter.
1-4
Despite going 1-4, the deck performed quite well, for a mill deck. The fact that this needs removal of some sort keeps me in black, otherwise I'd make it monoblue.
Best part of the day was the look on my opponents face when I cast Echoes for the first time. My friend of Misery!
I could have taken more games with a little more luck but I was pleased with the result. Now for a genuine Legacy tourney with mill!
I hope you enjoyed the read, LMK what you think, I'd love to read other reports, too.
Suggestions are welcome!
