I saw the posts about crappy scams and so on and I thought I would lighten the mood so we could talk about our lucky magic finds. I'm not really looking for stories about anyone ripping new players off or taking advantage of someone, because I have no problem calling you a bad person. What I want is the ebay/garage sale deal that came through or maybe someone giving you some cards and so on. My contribution to the story comes from this past summer. I'm in my mid 20's and have been playing magic since the 9th or 10th grade. My parents always gave me a hard time about wasting my money on cards when I was younger but hey, I was young and had no other obligations. Well fast forward to last year and I started playing magic again, heavily. This time around I think my parents got a sense that I actually enjoy the game and it's not just a phase. Well as a peace offering from always giving me a hard time they kept an eye out for magic!
I go home to visit my parents one weekend and there was a large box used for shipping paper sitting in my room. They had come across it at an estate sale and for $25.00 they thought it would be a nice surprise. Before any of you get too excited, there wasn't anything super valuable. However, there was way more than 25$ worth of cards. The only drawback was this guy put everything in a binder... I mean everything! there were pages of commons/lands/tokens all organized neatly into the binders. As I said nothing too expensive, as I'm guessing the guy sold anything valuable separately, but here are a few of the highlights. Prismatic Omen Idyllic Tutor 2x Birds of Paradise Various Filter lands from (eventide/shadowmoor) various pain lands from X edition Pretty much every liege from the shadowmoor era A bunch of fun generals (Reaper King, Experimental Kraj, and many more) 2x Kitchen Finks 2x Mana Morphose A ton of foil basic lands This is all off the top of my head. There was a lot junk in it too, but I would say to resell everything I had gotten individually (the >$1 rares) I would have gotten about 150-200 worth of cards from this box. This was probably my most memorable find as it came from two people who have disproved of spending money on magic for so long :-)

Friend of mine picked up hundreds of dollars worth of T2 at a value village a while ago (*Super* lucky, considering they ebay magic cards and video games nowadays).I once got a sea drake for free. All I did was ask a seller, "hey, I'm looking for sea drakes, you got any?" And he threw in one for free.

My 4534535th time sharing this story. I picked up an Imperial Recruiter for $0.15 from an old comic shop's C/UC bin. It was worthless at the time I bought it. __________________ ****Attention****DO NOT send cards to Jon Strickland, 1971 St.Laurent Blvd Apt 705, Ottawa Ontario, Canada K1G 3P8. My last one was a 5$ lot of cards, had a personal tutor, ~5 STP, and some other 3-4$ uncommons in it, no rares though, and commons were all crap.

Sweet. I cleared out a large number of Japanese stores of P3K back in 2005. Also cleared a large number of Japanese stores of their coldsnap precons. Other stuff like that.

My roommate found a collection of cards from a seller on eBay that really looked like someone getting out of Magic and every single card was listed, a huge list of a few hundred cards. He watched the auction, but when it went past $50, it was out of his price range, but I kept an eye on it and won the whole thing for about $100. It had a bunch of good cards, but hardly anything really notable, so I can see how it would be missed. You had to scroll through dozens of useless cards in the list to notice things like a foil Chain Lightning (along with pretty much all of the rest of the Fire and Lighting set), Goblin Guide, Hellrider, and a slew of other $3-5 cards in between the mass of bulk rares. It was probably between $150-$200 worth of cards, but almost all very small item things that would take forever to move; I'm still trying to trade off everything to this day, months and months later. When I was putting together an EDH deck, I was trading with some guy at the RTR pre-release. I had a heavy blue deck with counters, so I traded to get a foil card I needed for the deck. I figured a foil playable common would be worth about a dollar, and he agreed, so I gave him some dollar rare card in exchange and we both were happy. Later, when I played that EDH deck against a friend and played that card, he asked how I got it and I told him the story and he looked at me shocked. "Neither of you had any idea how much a foil Spell Pierce is worth?!" My friend trumps all of this, though. We were talking about Summer magic and at the time I had a Summer Twiddle and as we're explaining this, he notices he has a card with a copyright 1994 on it in his trade binder. A Savannah Lions that he had no idea how he got. SO lucky!

Friend of the family had an old collection and let me have anything I found. Lion's eye diamond, underground sea, sneak attack, enlightened tutor and land tax were among these

I figured this would be a common topic around here (the actual topic of this thread not your story), but I figured it would be a nice way to waste time at work. A couple of other good finds were at my local store when I played in highschool.
I found a Voidemage Prodigy Blistering Firecat Kamahl, Fist of Krosa all in the .10 box. I was so astonished I had to ask the store owner if these were indeed 10 cents. I considered that a win since the same store made me spend $13.00 on a phage the untouchable... but i just had to have that card!

There is no such thing as a Summer Twiddle.

The only thing I guess you could consider "lucky" for me was getting into EDH at an early enough point that I got to clear out one of the local shops of all the super-popular EDH foils for super cheap, i.e. coalition relic, spelljack, tooth and nail, etc.Oh, totally forgot my one decent IRL buy - some guy comes into the magic shop 6 months ago with a gigantic box full of magic cards, looking to sell to the owner. Unfortunately, 99% of the cards were unglued, so the owner tells him he's not interested. On a hunch, I stop the guy at his car outside and ask him if he also had the unglued basic lands. He did, and I bought roughly 100 unglued lands off him at .25 each. Just finished unloading most of them (I'm a ZEN land guy).

Yeah, I don't know why I thought I had one. I probably had an Unlimited one and misremembered me owning a Summer Magic card. Well, at least now I don't feel as bad for losing it.

Bought a collection off craigslist. He had all the rares listed and I got a pretty good deal on it. Sorting through the uncommons I found 4 english and 3 Italian Karakas.

A buddy of mine works for a busing company, anyway they have a lost and found, after 30 days if items are unclaimed the get rid of them, they were getting rid of a box of magic cards, he knew I collected asked if I wanted to take a look at them I said sure, some of the cards had been run over by something, but in it was 2 NM JTMS, Foil Scalding Tarn, 2 regular tarns, Marsh Flats, 2 Damnation, a few original Shocks, and a good assortment of low end rares, up to innistrad, things like Stromkirk Noble, Cahmpion of the Parish and such, I did compensate him since it was such a valuble find and he is an old friend of mine.

HmmmAbout a year or so ago, someone was giving away magic cards on craigslist. I called the guy and he had about 8000-1000 cards so I drove to his place. Nothing big in the collection, but there was a Windswept Heath. People talk about stores not having stuff for cheap anymore, but I found a brand new store last year who had a bunch of common boxes (by color) and I sifted through them and found a bunch of goodies (4 LED's and 12 careful study's). Commons were .10 each.

Girlfriend picked up 2 freezer ziploc bags worth of magic cards at a garage sale for $5.Had 2 Wasteland, 2 Volrath Stronghold, Land Tax, 4 Ancient Tomb, and about 100 $3-$5 uncommons/rares. Had tons of Alliances, but no FoW . Had tons of good buys from local Vintage Stock ($1 Grim Monolith, things like .10 commons/uncommons Daze, Rite of Flame, Shattering Spree, Tribal Flames, Standstill, Reanimate, Top, Aether Vial etc etc etc). Lots of good deals when they have a B1G1 sale of course.

A buddy of mine wanted to buy a collection of cards for $1000 many years ago. He was $100 short and said I could have 3 playsets of lands if I gave him the $100. I said sure. I chose 4x tundra, 4x underground sea (these were worth around $20 at the time), and after a lot of deliberation because I never heard of those lands before, I hesitanty chose the third playset.... mishra's workshops. __________________ |My Angels~My P9 l""|"\__, |~~My #1 Angel~~l'_|'_|_|) |(@)(@)""***|(@)(@)**|(@)
