If this is in the wrong area then I apologize.

I currently keep cards in a variety of places, but the higher end items I keep in sleeves in binders. I am going to have a daughter soon and knowing this is going to take up much of my time for the next few years I am trying to figure out how to store these long term. Should I take the more expensive items out of the binders and put them into long boxes with my commons/uncommons? I was not certain if the plastic of the sleeves/binders might harm the cards long term. I have heard of this being the case with comics.

Thanks for any info.

If you're using PVC-free sleeves and binder pages then you should be fine with storing your cards sleeved in binders. If you're not using PVC-free sleeves and pages then make the change now. Monster binders are not PVC free, which is why the can smell really strong.

If you're keeping your cards long-term as a sort of investment then you might also look at getting some insurance on them. You can see this thread on insurance:

As a side note, if you are protecting your cards in a fire-proof safe, then the cards should not be stored in sleeves. A possible fire will still get the cards and safe hot, and while they shouldn't catch fire, the sleeves or pages might melt.

Regarding the fireproof safe idea, we put our passports in our and took them out for a trip maybe 6 months later. The entire contents of the safe were musty and damp. Best I can figure there was quite a bit of moisture in the passports from our trip to Thailand and Hong Kong earlier in the year.

Apparently this is a very common problem people run into with fire safes. Since then I keep a bag of rice and a bag of silica crystals(cat litter) in there and haven't noticed any more moisture problems.

Thank you for this point, it's a very sound one. Appreciate your input.

Ultra-Pro pages are all PVC-free. I don't know about other brands.

I appreciate the ideas and the info on the Non-PVC binders/plastics. I have a safe currently, but it is a little full at the moment. Not sure what the wife would say if I attempted to put cards in there. But, I have been considering getting insurance on my cards, comics, statues, etc. so I appreciate that idea. Plus, the link is greatly appreciated.

I'm looking into the state farm insurance on collectibles. I'll let you know how it goes.

The chief problem is discoloration/yellowing of the cards.

It can't be an issue if you put them in sleeves then in the PVC right?
