So, yeah, after everything that happened with both the MOCS and the Online PTQ crashing this weekend, we get this:

Almost seems like a good idea to overhaul the whole thing. Its pretty garbage compared to other online games especially the if i disconnect i get dropped from the tournament.

Keep in mind, this is likely a knee-jerk reaction to this article:

If one of the major faces of Pro Magic says "Everyone should uninstall modo" there is a problem. Brian Kibler is one of the nicest people but when something is wrong he has no problem saying it.

That's only one article. It's probably a knee-jerk reaction to the thousands of angry phone calls, emails and tweets (which may have been spurred by Kibler) they got before that article was published. Also, this has apparently happened to MOCS four times now*?!!!

This is an excellent point from the article, "Once you lose the ability to compensate people for a crash, you need to have some kind of failsafe for the situation in which a crash occurs."

*-according to the article

Crashes like this and a dismal client "beta" that have been going on for a year now suggest the the online department at WotC needs to be sacked and Hasbro needs to butt out and let WotC focus on improving the company not just collecting profits.

The client is bad, but wasn't this a server error? I've seen the old client crash, but even then you could get right back on. I'm not on all that often, but I've never tried to log in and not been able to.

Kind of surprised it took this long for someone of this much prominence in the community to voice their displeasure with MODO. Guess everyone just settled in with the fact the client was prehistoric and wasn't going to improve.

Years ago when WOTC/Hasbro sacked LeapingLizard as the primary company to maintain MTGO it's been a downhill slide ever since.

WOTC boastfully stated they could do just as good a job on their own without having to pay another company to maintain their product.

It was strictly a money move, one for profit, hand over fist, and gave everyone of their customers a big middle finger.

This crap has gone on for years, well before the MOCS were ever invented. It's the fact WOTC/Hasbro just doesn't give a flying you know what.

EDIT: I mean for christ sake when v3.0 came out they promised that avatars would "eventually" return like they were shown in v2.0. That was 6+ years ago!

I know it sounds silly and childish, but something that was promised years ago and seems so easy is still yet to be resolved. Shows how much WOTC/Hasbro cares and making their product better and/or grabbing the money from your wallet.

If you've been around as long as I have you'll also notice how much prize support has gone down, yet like the article Kibler wrote says....they are constantly breaking sales records and putting up great numbers of profit as a company.

MTGO is almost dead to me, and when that new interface hits I'm for sure not playing anymore. First it was avatars, then it was the move to v3.0 which is garbage, then it seems like they just keep lowering prize support, and last but not least was the fact they made redemption $25 per set. A substantial % increase, absurd even.....I know why they did it, bc big companies abused the system...but small grinders like myself, who relied on redemption for playsets to play with IRL on a cheaper level...well you basically spit in my face and everyone else's face.

Leaping Lizards did a great job on the original, but I thought the plan was always for them to develop the software, and then WoTC would maintain it. The developers at Leaping Lizards are probably more interested in making cool new stuff than manning & running the same thing indefinitely.

I think where Wizards messed up is when they started to make their own versions of the software without having the software expertise or experience. I miss the Leagues and the old foil borders from the original client versions. I think Magic Online in its current state is fine for playing casual games and online-only tournaments, but given the crash record, it shouldn't be made a requirement for real life rankings. I think also shutting down the daily events with no bearing on real rankings is an overreaction.

I have to agree with just about everything you have said. The only thing that really keeps me playing is the fact I can play a game at anytime. It is just the availability that keeps me in.

QFT. I only play magic online because of the daily events. I find the single elimination focus that WotC is pushing down upon the community to be self serving. Yes I know this puts me into the minority on Modo because limited is the format of choice online but I'm a constructed player and I like the fact that digital cards are usually cheaper online and allow me to test more frequently.

I haven't yet seen one 8-man swiss constructed queue fire in the last two or three times that I logged in. Eventually I just drop from the event and sign off. There is only so much time I can spend waiting for something that is never going to happen.

I also agree that shutting down the Daily Events was a terrible decision. I remember Kibler's concern being the PT and season championships invites which leads to the impossibility of adequate compensation should those crash. I'm not sure what the DEs have got to do with those.

I wonder if they have to rebuild the entire program from the ground up at some point in the future if they'll consider changing to a subscription service (you get all cards but you pay a monthly fee and possibly pay to enter tournaments). Obviously that would annoy some people who've spent money accumulating cards and consider it an investment. I wonder what arguements there are out there for how they could do that. I've never paid to play magic online b/c I've been worried about crashes, misclicks, and just in general not wanting to have to have a digital playset of things.

I never understood how such a profitable game had such a HORRIBLE online system and, despite the recent update looking a lot better, it still looks like trash. It just doesn't make sense to me. I think they're trying to continue on an engine or platform that can never provide what our eyes, in modern times, would expect and it's highly disappointing. If MTG weren't a great game, this thing would flop from sheer ugliness, alone.

Only thing I currently have on MTGO now is the Momir Vig avatar and 60 foil basic lands. That's it.

and when they switch servers and go to the new 3.0 version, I will sell off that stuff to.

Wow, you haven't logged in in a while if you think 3.0 is the 'new' version.

The old set re-releases were fun. Master's Edition 3 was actually pretty awesome. Super slow, super bad cards, but super fun. Wish we'd have another block that like again.

Also, leagues were fun. Did they just suck up too much bandwidth or something? It was kinda lame getting stuck with a bad cardpool but you got to play as much as you wanted with cards you usually wouldn't and unlike the casual room you'd know you wouldn't randomly end up against some noob trying to look cool by playing some sort of legacy combo deck.

Whateva the new version is going to be. It's beta right now, I have tried it and no thank you.

No motlers are on there, well that I can converse and play against. All of the old timer players are gone. Just isn't what it use to be. Hell, bots even killed the auction room, a couple years back or so.

The new Beta version is horrible. Glitches, bugs and overall design hella sucks bad. No way would I continue to use MTGO if they are gonna force you to change versions again. Yes, I was one of them to vote against it.

The beta was so bad last year when I tried it that it hard froze my computer. As in the cursor wouldn't even move.

I used to draft on MTGO a lot. I got 30 duals when ME4 was out just drafting. I thought long term, this was the future of Magic. I realized I was deluding myself. In its current form, MTGO is more likely to drive people away from the game rather than grow the community. There is so much wrong with MTGO I don't know where to start. A few things:

The client is terrible. It would have appeared outdated 15 years ago, never mind NOW.

The classified system is complete crap. The whole idea of having to use bots, no easy way to search collections without opening a trade, etc. Complete garbage.

People have complained about the price of legacy staples forever. MTGO was a chance for Wizards to make all the legacy cards available so everyone could play and brew and not be hampered by the reprint policy etc. Instead, they release random staples intermittently and not nearly enough of them (FoW anyone?) and have no real policy moving forward. With physical cards, we have some concept of what Wizards would reprint and how it might be done. Online we have no clue. I am not going to buy FoWs and all the other Legacy staples when there is no policy whatsoever on how they are going to release older cards moving forward. Right now a virtual FoW costs more than a real one. That can't be healthy.

I'm actually getting angrier and angrier writing this. Almost every facet of that POS client and system I hate.

Yup. I never really got into magic online ever seen a buddy lost a draft misclicking a splice on glacial ray (back in Kamigawa days). However, after hearing about legacy/vintage cards becoming available I thought hey if they do this right I'll get into magic online just to play eternal formats w/o having to worry about the reserved list.

...

Then I started reading about how they've done it and how bad peoples' experiences are with the client.

I haven't logged in.

Then after they 'shut things down' after Kibler's article I've been following things to see if they lure me back. Doesn't sound like they are going to do anything about it (saw a [post on reddit](http://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/1rh4c6/modo_daily_events_expected_to_return_11_december/) they are starting things back up in like 2 weeks w/o making programming changes it seems.

Sigh. Wasted opportunities.

I don't want to sound too uninformed here but...

I'm lost as to why they don't try to pull something off like the console games. I get it, it's easier said than done. With all of the complex interactions of cards and programming it would rough, but the consoles games are so user friendly! Magic 2014 on the xbox is basically the only way some of my friends and I are still able to play.

I had attempted MTGO a while ago but stopped after experiencing the trial. If MTGO was anything like the console version, I'd most likely stop playing physical magic all together.

It just baffles me that the console versions are exactly what I expect out of digital magic experience while MTGO makes me nauseous.

I think this is exactly what they don't want. I'd wager that they like being able to make new sets yearly (read: print money). I could very wrong though.
