Maybe flash back from today plane of the week to the first Pyrexian invasion. You get to introduce a whole bunch of cool characters, have big arse battle scenes and have sequels built right in.

Your rube will be played by some semi-geeky but attractive 20-something male. Your veteran planeswalker will have some similarity to Urza (who is secretly responsible for the events that made it possible for the conflict to start). Your big bad will be an all consuming evil force, possibly Nicol Bolas or at least one of his minions.

I fully expect cameos from existing planeswalkers in the mythos, like Jace (cool hot shot surrounded by blue swirly magic stuff), Garruk (comedic relief brute), Chandra (I know I'm hot), and some sort of little weak guy who screws up all the time (Squee, the planeswalker!) but is secretly very powerful. Probably some sort of turncoat in there as well, like a Tezzeret or Sarkhan type, who get lured to the dark side by Bolas.
