20th Century Fox has closed a deal to acquire the screen rights to the hugely popular fantasy card game from Hasbro and will develop the property with an eye to launch a massive franchise on the scale of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. The studio has enlisted Simon Kinberg, the Fox-based writer-producer who is also helping shepherd the X-Men and Fantastic Four universes at the studio, to produce the adaptation. Kinberg will also act as the franchise's engineer -- or supreme sorcerer, if you will -- overseeing the development of the movie series in concert with Hasbro execs.... http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/fox-bring-magic-gathering-big-670529 __________________ Type and hit enter for quick TCG prices: www.echomage.com

Yes sir. It will happen before the actual release. I think a movie is a terrible idea. As big a fan I am of the game I don't ever plan to sit down and watch a film based on it.

I will enjoy this movie only if this is the plot:A person spends 30 minutes in front of a computer, spending hundreds of dollars sniping ebay auctions. After half an hour, the person finally jumps up and exclaims 'IT'S FINISHED!' The camera zooms in: he has just sniped a NM tabernacle for a cool $360. Cut scene. He is triple sleeping the tabernacle and adds it to his triple sleeved deck, which he bungles as he picks up. Cut scene. He's at his first legacy event and he's certain he's going to win ALL TEH MATCHES. It then shows the entire 10 hour tournament. I won't spoil the ending for you, but it's definitely a movie I'd go see.

I like the few books I read and thought it could be a cool movie. It would need to have a ton of fancy effects though...how brutal would it be to see Chandra throw a huge fireball at Jace who, in response to her fireball, draws three cards and puts two back.__________________ I am looking for signed legacy cards! ...how could it possibly be any good? There's way too much magic and weird creatures floating around for a live-action film. It'll just end up looking ridiculous. My expectation: a flop, just like Jon Carter of Mars. __________________ "I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each. If its done like harry potter or LOTR I doubt it will be bad. No it won't follow the card game. The books are fairly good and it would be cool to go back to the rath and urza cycles. Karn, squee...

"Arena" with a budget and crew on the scale of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings could be an awesome movie, and could draw even more players to the game.

edit: correction, that are 4 books in total, easily milked out to 6 movies. Amen. Hardly any magic in that. The Brother's War make for an excellent movie series, and afterwards they can release a pre-quel (like The Hobbit) in 'The Thran'.
the Legends cycle would be a good movie, too I guess. But one of the best movies would be, in STRONG contrast towards the involved sets, Kamigawa block. __________________ I'm a geek, you're a geek. Mostly looking forward to the absurdly disappointed storyline fans after the movie comes out.If it's better than half of the DnD movies, I think it'll be a victory.

With all the different tribes/lords, we could call it "Game of Thrones"....damn that George R R Martin beat us to it first.
