So, back when the original Mirrodin rotated out of standard I dropped standard to focus on legacy/extended. Then in 07' I quit magic. In 2013 I got back in and have been playing standard/modern/legacy. Now due to time constraints I'm dropping standard again.I figured I'd play modern/legacy. However with the new PTQ structure (or lack of) it appears there will no longer be a modern ptq season. It's up to the stores and many stores around me will just run standard to get the largest turn out. That makes sense for the stores but doesn't do me any good. I've attended 4+ SCG Opens in the past year, but since I won't be playing standard those seem kind of pointless as the Invitational is half standard and most opens are too far away for me to get back home Sunday night to work on Monday. There are a few Modern GP in the US next year but all are like 7+ hours away and the Legacy GP is too far away (as is the one this year which is a shame as I'd really like to go to GP NJ). I'm feeling pretty defeated right now with no modern PTQ season to play in. Is anyone else in a similiar boat? How do you justify keeping thousands invested in modern/legacy cards if you don't have many tournaments to go to? Help

I ask myself the same question almost weekly. For me, it's not a lack of events, but a lack of time to actually play in them. I justify it by basically arguing that some day I will have free time again. At that time, I'll be glad I held on to a stack of cards that are good in legacy and would be far too expensive to re-buy. Of course, then I think about what I could do with the several thousand dollars a sell out would bring in. The only thing that stops me is the thought that I would be truly done with the game at that point. After more than 20 years of playing, that thought makes me sad. TL;DR version - nostalgia keeps me from selling everything. __________________ Wisconsin - smells like dairy air!I collect Granite Gargoyles. Send them my way.

Unfortunately I've found you're never truly done. I sold my collection in 2007 to make sure I never got back in to the game (Sold it to a guy in Singapore through MOTL). I had an unlimited set of duals and tons of other stuff though I'd sold my power back in 04. Flash forward to 2013 I buy my buddy some boosters for his 30th bday so we can do 'sealed deck' for fun. Big mistake. I caught the bug again and dropped $15,000 in a year rebuying collections and whatnot. Now I'm like...I don't have time to play standard and no important events within driving distance to use these cards at. I'm pretty down about it.

Im kind of in the same boat. I build these decks that I can barely play due to time at work and having a social life. So, I play casual and collect. Im working on collecting the full beta set to feed my collector needs, and get to make decks to play for fun with friends and when i happen to be free and an event is available, i go to those (which rarely happens)

Unfortunately in the same boat too. I have 4 Legacy decks, one of which is foiled except for FoW's, but I no longer have time to play. Considering selling everything to pay off student loans, but don't need the money now either.

I've got the opposite problem of you all imo. I've got the time, just not the cards and/or money to play in said events. And local scene for casual play here in this town is autrocious. __________________ 30th in refs on Motl! #1 Ref's for Arizona! I have several modern and edh decks but sold my legacy decks and haven't had standard for awhile. I generally draft and edh every week, modern seems to have slowed down a lot.

They did, but now that they've changed the PTQ structure to PPTQ then regional PTQ it's up to each individual store to choose the format. Since Standard generally draws the largest crowd that will usually be the format. :-|

The store I play at in Greenville, SC does SCG legacy and SCG modern events once every 2 months.

Are all the actual regional PTQs going to be standard though? __________________ Wisconsin - smells like dairy air!I collect Granite Gargoyles. Send them my way.

As far as I've seen they haven't indicated the format for regional PTQ but please link in information if I'm incorrect http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/new-path-pro-tour-2014-07-29 But ya, if most Preliminary PTQs are going to be standard and I'm not playing standard then it won't matter what the actual PTQs are they appear to have provided information on the locations but not format http://magic.wizards.com/en/events/coverage/ptktk/regional-ptq-locations-and-promo-card-revealed-2014-10-11

Although now that FNM can be any format, you might see more modern PTQ's due to the nature of people playing that every Friday. Honestly if the game's PTQ format just became standard/limited I don't know how much better it would succeed than previous years.
