San Diego is getting another GP this year and seeing as how I'm actually aware of it, and currently playing Magic I think I will be going.

Any tips from you vets out there? Aside from the Champions of Kamigawa pre-release all my magic events have been in shops and under 20 people.

I'm usually not very interested in standard, so my current plan is to play until X-2 then drop and play modern or sealed side events.

If anybody wants tips on where to eat and drink in downtown San Diego feel free to ask. The convention center is very convenient for walking.

So, keep in mind at GP people are much less forgiving about "oops, I mean". Don't miss your triggers, don't move phases if you don't mean it. Watch how you say 'ok' b/c they could claim you didn't respond to a spell, ability, or trigger and let it resolve.

Bring water/snacks if possible. They are expensive.

You don't have to drop. Planeswalker points are based off yearly points now. If you could get 1300 by 5/31 then you'd earn a buy for next year's Grand Prix. 6-3 at a GP is usually good for like 208 points. :-p

Cascade games has it GPSD 2014 lol

1. Day one is Competitive REL and day two is Professional REL. Be careful on your play. You don't want to receive a game loss and ruin your day.

2. No lunch break.

3. Day one with nine rounds means it is a long day. You better take enough rest before the tournament.

4. Planeswalker point means nothing to someone who is not a GP-regular. Just drop and enjoy some other format if you think you will have fun with it.

5. One of the reason I go to GP is dealers. You can always get a good deal if you find the right dealer. And they may have some high end stuff which is very hard to find in the market.

Yeah. That and the page full of TBD information is giving me a lot of faith this will be run smoothly (sarcasm).

Is it normal for them to have so little info on an event this close?

Why even rush there to play in it if you don't care for the format? There's tons of side events (at least there was at GP Cleveland last weekend). Plus there's a bunch of dealers with a boatload of harder to find stuff to keep YA busy all day. Plus you can pick up the promo card/playmats from the dealers or maybe even a player that just doesn't want it
I would definitely bring your own snacks and drink as they're ridiculously expensive there, but the trades were fantastic...even to dealers. Allowed me to trade off soon rotated standard for a foil judge stp

It's always like that until they get within a month or two of the actual event date.e

So a follow up noob question. If I don't want to play in the main event I can still go to the GP and play in side events without any sort of entry fee?

All the side events have an entry fee, but you usually get something just for entering. That's what my one buddy did - went with me just to play in the modern side event. Got a playmat and won something like 100 tickets towards a prize wall that has a buncha random stuff to choose from. Ended up trading the tickets to someone that wanted a foil uncut sheet

I didn't get to edit in time. I meant "entry fee to the venue". Thanks for the info. I had heard that the prize tickets are an effective currency since you can't "buy" cards from anybody but the vendors.

You're not supposed to buy from non-dealers, but it happens all the time. Just be discreet. It's like you're not supposed to cheat in the main event, but most people do.

:-|

I'd like to think most people do NOT cheat in the tournament.

No. You don't have to pay to get inside the venue itself in most cases. (I think there was one in Europe though). You just have to pay for whatever events you want to play.

I'm thinking the value of the playmat alone may make it worth entering the main event.

ya, if i dip my toes back into standard and don't hate it i might go b/c of the playmat (and location)...but that's like a $600-$700 flight for me about 28 days before my wedding. ouch. on top of that my honeymoon is a month later in cali

I dont know it to be the case in this particular event, but the GP's I have been to have had playmats offered for side events as well.

I and some friends will be there and none of us intend to do the main event. I have more fun/less stress in side events and get way more prize support (main event you probably get nothing but a headache).

Thing is though that it is easy to blow $100 or more on side events as they each cost $30 or so depending on which one.
