Surprise, surprise; people have begun to disagree with my little lecture on Prophecy that I gave yesterday. I have this to say on the matter: I stated my opinions, and I stand by them. Besides, I’m nothing if not controversial, so I rather enjoyed reading through the counterarguments. Across the Board is all about showing my perspective, though, so keep that in mind when you decide to email me arguments. My personal favorite comment was, and I quote:

“RU some (censored) (censored)??? Prpohesy SUcks!!!

You see, it’s thought-out comments like this that I appreciate. It’s obvious that a lot of consideration was put into considering both sides of the argument, then carefully phrasing his words to convey an open and honest statement. I salute you, idiot. You see, when you send me a senseless piece of drivel such as the above, you leave yourself in a position to be publicly ridiculed. In fact, that kid is lucky that I’m in a good mood, or his name and email address would be made public.

The Source is slowly but surely being made ready, and the grand reopening will happen soon. Now, I’m not an incredibly talented site designer, so don’t expect anything monumentally fancy. It’s meant to be a sort of utility site, after all; something that is used as an informational source. Tedman calls it my Dojo because it’s going to focus on decks and articles. Since this is a rogue site, though, don’t expect it to be as, uh, refined as The Dojo. More info as it becomes available.

Anyway, I suppose that I should get back to the Prophecy thing. One of the more intelligent responses that I received asked me what I thought was the best card of the set. While Mindgamer is being called “broken” (it’s not on the spoiler, though, so don’t expect it to make the final cut), my pick for the top card is Mageta, the Lion. A spellshaper that produces a Wrath of God effect? For only five mana? Mageta ushers in a new era of White Control, which hasn’t seen much action for quite a while (no, Jank doesn’t count). I get this feeling that White/Blue Control is going to be HUGE post-Urza, and Mageta is going to be the kill card.

Drafting is going to be incredibly fun in Prophecy. Normally, my card shop holds a two set draft (for example, one pack Masques and two packs Nemesis), so the Informers will be huge. For those of you that haven’t read the spoilers, there are two Informers. Mercenary Informer (white) puts a target Mercenary on the bottom of its owner’s library, and Rebel Informer (black) does the same to a Rebel. It’s a nice twist on the existing Rebel/Mercenary search engine, and it has the potential to lead to hilarious (and annoying) situations. That’s right, folks, there’s a new king of draft, and it’s Nightwing Glider! Being the only Rebel/Mercenary that can’t be bounced by the opposing color (not counting Rappelling Scouts), it should be worshipped as drafting’s new god! Mass insanity!

Of course, if you want to talk about mass insanity, you can’t forget about anything with the word “Rhystic” in front of it. Talk about slowing down the game. “Uh, hold on a sec; I have to do some quick calculations on my abacus.” Can you imagine the confusion of responding to a Rhystic spell or ability with another Rhystic spell or ability, putting it all on the stack, then paying costs? This is going to be happening in a few short weeks. I have to tell you, though, I really like some of this Rhystic stuff.

In particular, I like Rhystic Tutor. For three mana, it allows you to search your library for a card and put it into your hand. Your opponent can fizzle it by paying two mana, though, which may make it unappealing to some people. However, consider that your opponent must now keep at least one mana source available to do so, and that’s going to slow your opponent down. You’re playing black as well, which isn’t a color known for taking its time. Besides, you have to ask yourself if you would pay to fizzle a Tutor or leave the mana open to pay something else and/or bluff. It creates a situation that will require your opponent to really think through his moves, and it can be used almost as a weapon in some cases (cast it to attempt to get your opponent to tap out).

I noticed something today as I was going through the corrected spoiler: red has graveyard manipulation. Searching for Survivors is sort of like a Gamble; you shuffle your graveyard, then your opponent chooses a card from your graveyard at random. If it’s a creature, you put it into play, and if it’s not, you remove it from the game. Avalanche Rider recursion. Hell yeah! Red isn’t known for running many creatures, and Searching for Survivors is somewhat unreliable, but it’s the best that red has right now.

Thought for the Day: Good Lord, it’s possible to build a winning Squirrel deck now…

I think that person is a total idiot. Prophecy is going to rock, from the examples that I have seen. Could you please tell me where to see the spoiler though? I think I could buld a REALLY good deck with some of the cards from prophecy.

Iakae, Just wondering... Is the spoiler on www.newwave.org the real one? Because I have heard of odd sorts of cards such as:
Spellshapers that are tutors.
Ertai and Tangarth
Some other stuff that I cannot remember right now.

By the way, Big Dumb Green May make a large comeback.
Also, if Joreal or whoever is created, Wouldn't he be disgustingly broken with kegs?
I say that Prophecy is going to change the face of magic permenantly.
Mercenarys are actually VERY playable now, and Rebels are hated beyond anything.
end of my rambleing.

It would appear that the spoiler on New Wave is the finalized copy, yes. We'll know for sure on Saturday at the pre-release, of course, but for now it's the best thing to go on.

I noticed the lack of Ertai, Tangarth, and the tutor spellshapers myself when I was going over the spoiler. However, if you go by the rumored storyline, Prophecy takes place in Dominaria. Ertai is still on Rath. So, logically, he would have no place in the set. Not sure about Tangarth or the spellshapers, but my theory is that they are in the works for Invasion if they don't pop up at the pre-release.

I'm thinking that the tutor spellshapers will be a theme in Invasion (much the way that the Legendary Spellshapers are in Prophecy). What I'm thinking in regards to Ertai and Tangarth is that WoTC may have felt that the set was using enough Legends as it is, so that it was best to hold off on printing more.

Actually, this set appears weaker to me than Nemesis. Not many good red cards to use in Sligh, except for maybe Fault Riders, and the best of the green cards is, in my opinion, Squirrel Wrangler, which will work nice with Deranged Hermit and green's fast mana.

If my editor gets my column on time, I'll be reviewing cards I like at magiccampus.com. It not, it will have to wait until next Friday.

Hmm suddenly that groundskeeper is really really good.As for the set. Personally it is not the strongest set made but it has merit.Once people figure out what goes with what some cards jump out and they will be seen as really good. Most of the rumored mercenaries are not there though . I don't know if this set was made slow on purpose but this set lets thing battle out more than the previous combo decks.
