Tedman's Tales, May 27 Extended Tournament Report
Hello again. Tedman here, and I've got a juicy little tournament report for you. It's a local Extended tournament, with 4 rounds of Swiss and 12 participants.
I played the only Extended deck I own, which I've been working on for months, now. I made it when Masques first came out, and said to myself "There's an abusive combination with Squee!" So here's the deck list.
4 Birds of Paradise
4 Wall of Roots
4 Survival of the Fittest
3 Oath of Ghouls
3 Recurring Nightmare
3 Duress
2 Academy Rector
1 Goblin Bombardment
1 Squee, Goblin Nabob
1 Ghitu Slinger
1 Avalanche Riders
1 Sliver Queen
1 Phyrexian Plaguelord
1 Radiant's Dragoons
1 Spike Weaver
1 Bone Shredder
1 Spike Feeder
1 Uktabi Orangutan
1 Wood Elves
1 Karmic Guide
1 Monk Realist
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Thrull Surgeon
4 Bayou
3 Taiga
3 Savannah
2 Mountain Valley
2 Scrubland
2 Badlands
1 Tropical Island
1 Volcanic Island
1 Plateau
1 Volrath's Stronghold
SB: 3 Aura of Silence
3 Choke
2 Shard Phoenix
2 Swords to Plowshares
1 Spike Weaver
1 Cartographer
1 Scour
1 Perish
1 Hunted Wumpus
I know I've got some explaining to do on some of the odd card choices there. Sliver Queen was there for a few reasons.
A) She's fat
B) Her tokens are Slivers
C) I can sac her tokens to Goblin Bombardment or Recurring Nightmare
Since Wood Elves doesn't say basic forest, I can fetch a Dual . And Karmic Guide is there for an extra recursion when I cast her. Simple as that. Also, disregard the sideboard. It really sucks .
Round 1: BEATDOWN Necro w/lots of Land Destruction
Game 1: I have to mulligan down to 5, but I keep a semi-decent hand. I get out a lot of early Birds, Walls, etc, but no Survival. In the meantime, he's pounding away on me with Black Knights and such. Then, I finally draw a Survival. I stabilize at like 7 or 8 life, then whip him into shape by Slinging all his creatures to death twice a turn .
Game 2: I side in Scour for his Necropotence. I mulligan once. Again, I get a good hand, but no Survival. I take all his first-strike Knight beats, and he destroys all of my lands. I die.
Game 3: I side out Scour after finding out that he plays 3. I side in Cartographer for all the LD (I KNEW he'd come in handy). I keep a near-god hand. I play a first turn bird, second turn Survival/fetch Squee, third turn Sling his creature. Recurring Nightmare recurs a Sliver Queen for the win.

Round 2: Blue/White Control
Game One: He doesn't counter a single spell this match . I get out some early creatures, and smack him around for a while. He plays a Disk, and says go. I say "crap" because I have 3 or 4 critters on the table, and he'd soon be able to stabilize. I draw. Survival. I fetch my Uktabi and eat the Disk, and proceed to win.
Game 2: I side in 2 Chokes. I get another second turn Survival out, and start amassing creatures in my hand and graveyard. Then he lays a Serendib Efreet. Uh oh! Not Extended! He, on the other hand, didn't know that, the deck not being his and all. Regrettably, he conceded and then dropped out. I felt really sorry for him.

4-1 Games
Round 3: Black Suicide without Dark Ritual or Hatred, but with Necro
Game 1: He puts out a first turn Carnophage. I'm all like "Cool! I usually kill Sui Black!" My hopes are crushed when a few turns later, he drops his whole hand of creatures. I'm now facing 3 Shadow-Dudes, 1 Skulking Ghost, and 2 Carnophage. Meanwhile, I'm doing nothing stuck at 3 lands. His turn. He draws, plays a Bad Moon. I scoop.
Game 2: I get a fairly decent hand, and I get a third turn Survival. He doesn't play a creature for a few turns, which buys me some time to start up the engine. He drops a few creatures at a time, Negator, Negator, Shadow, Shadow, Carno, etc. I fetch my Spike Weaver. It's looking really good for me. Since I have a Volrath's Stronghold in play, I can recur my Spike Weaver as many times as needed. I also have a Goblin Bombardment in play, and he has a Necro. With a considerable amount of lands, I get impatient and recur too many things in one turn, and leave myself without enough mana to Fog with the Weaver. Doh!
2-1 Matches
4-3 Games
Round 4: White Weenie
Game 1: There's not much to say about this 5 minute game. He gets out a horde of Shadow Weenies (I HATE shadow!) And Soul Wardens and Mommas, etc. I die horribly.
Game 2: This game goes on for about half an hour, just because I'm too stubborn to concede. In fact, I almost pulled this one into a win! He gets out early weenies like any good weenie deck should do, and I get the Survival engine going like any good Survival deck should. I get the same situation as game 2 of round 3- the Recurring Spike Weaver, Goblin Bombardment. The problem is, he Armageddoned away all the lands. I was advised to concede by other people, but I didn't. I knew there was a way I could win. I regrow my mana base, and get out all 4 Birds. I get a few lands, and it's recurring Spike Weaver time again! Although, it's kind of hard to do that when he plows your Weaver and gets a Dust Bowl out. I die to Shadow creatures.
2-2 Matches
4-5 Games
This is all the rounds of swiss. The top 4 then duked it out, and Phil S (Lachlann on MOTL) crapped out. Poor Phil A (Glacier14), who also crapped out in the swiss. Then again, I crapped out, too. That's a lot of crap.
Oh well. There's a sealed deck coming up in June. And I'll be ready. This is Tedman, signing off.
