I was once a passionate Magic player. I would go to tournaments once a week, and play Magic with my equally Magic-loving friends for 2 hours a day on average. Now I do neither. I haven't bought cards in a month. I haven't done a tournament in 6. I haven't played casually with friends in A WHOLE WEEK! Why and how did this transmutation happen?

REASON #1: It's all WOTC R&D's fault.

I have not found more than 2 cards in Masques and Nemesis worth using in my decks. As a result, my decks haven't changed in months and I get bored quickly. I don't have a sufficient card or money base to build many new decks, so I'm kind of stuck.

REASON #2: My friends have lost interest.

I don't have anywhere near as many friends who are passionate Magic players now as I did last year. You could say "Oh go play Apprentice." bringing me to my next point.

REASON #3: I don't enjoy Apprentice all that much either.

Not to offend the games' creators or people who die by it, but it just is that way.

REASON #4: There just haven't been local tourneys in months.

This can only happen because of lack of demand. Meaning more people here feel the way I do.

_____________________________________________

I still enjoy the game, but now I can't stand to play in large doses. I'm on the recovery trail. I wonder if anyone else is in this apathetic state, and to help you out I recommend the following:

RECOMMENDATION #1: Recruit new players.

If you've got enthused friends, their passion will rub off on you. Also, you've got fresh competition and new decks to look at.

RECOMMENDATION #2: Trade entire decks.

If you've gotten totally bored with a deck that you've depleted your trade stock to make, try trading it for an equally powerful deck. I think entire deck-trading should be done here on MOTL.

RECOMMENDATION #3: Make your own tournaments.

If you have about 50 Magic players living within 10 miles of your house, WHY NOT? Everyone pays $3 in advance, the winner takes home a box, and you make a tidy profit.

_____________________________________________

It is too bad that Magic players lose their passion. Magic players are a unique group and they're some of the best people I know. I hope this will help some dispassionate Magic players.

here's how a hardcore magic player loses his passion: a block rotates out, making a majority of his cards not useable for t2 anymore, then they don't want to spend anymore money on the newer set.which leads the road to them quiting

They lose their passion cause it gets redundent. All the same decks. My advice, quit for a while, maybe a year like I did, and come back to a almost new game. It works.

usually it goes like this. you start. get some packs and grasp the consept. get better and better-spending money. the set you became "fond" of goes out of t2 and you don't want to spent any more money so you casually fade away. atreides, it is okay to blame everyone but yourself

It happens to everyone at some point. You get bored with the game, you get tired of spending lots of money to stay current, you get tired of having to learn new sets while your favorite cards are removed from T2. Take some time off, and when you come back you will be amazed at how the game has changed.

Recommendation #4: Start drafting, be it sealed deck or rochester. You never know how fun it is until you keep playing it.

You people are forgetting that Type 2 is not all Magic: The Gathering there is. As wayne said, you can start drafting, though that is quite expensive if you do it regularly, almost more expensive as type 2. But why play type 2 at all? I've been playing this game since Mirage and I think the total type 2 match count for me is less than 20, because I didn't start playing it all. I just play with my friends, with all the cards I can get, from Arabian Nights to Prophecy. Make up your own formats, play multiplayer, play type 1, play type 1.5, play extended, play emperor, play crap common draft, play mental magic and if after that you say you're bored with the game, then it's probably not for you anyway

I agree with Preacher. Our group all play casual using every card ever printed as our base. That way you can make fun theme decks that don't have to win by turn 4. Makes for some interesting deck match ups. Also you don't have to worry about keeping current, so if you decide not to buy a bunch of the new stuff you can still be competitive.

Preacher is right, just play extended. I got sick and tired of having to make new decks every time a block rotated out in type 2. By playing extended i don't have to make new decks, i just add a few cards from new sets that improve my decks

you could get all those commons at the back of your closet and draft those with your friends. you should have enough to keep the environment different each time. and whenever a new set comes out, each person can chip in a little cash to buy a bunch of boosters, just to sample the set.

This has happened to many people including me. I see this a lot when a person gets to much Magic for a day especially if they don't win much. These people then go out and spend WAY to much money on current sets that all their friends have a lot of and getting their hopes up to get a Core or back in the good old day a Scroll or Hammer. I did this in Visions and got so bored that I totally tuned Magic out for about 6 months to a year. When I came back and found new players had joined(this is before I started at Tournaments) I put aside about enough to buy 3 boxes of each new set. Not always spending it on boxes but just for any card in the set. Then I went to Tournaments and loved the envirement(except the hagglers from a local store of ours(yes dreamers i'm talkin about you)). Sometimes we all need to take a break and relax. Just don't get to much magic for a day.
