The FecAltar Combo deck had appeared in various websites for the last few
months. I decided to toy with it and make my own modifications. For those of you who never heard about it let me give you a short course on
how the deck works. Here it is. Once you get the combo (Altar, S. Cluster,
Fecundity) in play, you can discard a card for 1 mana to create a Saproling
Token. You sacrifice the token to Ashnod's Altar to generate 2 mana. This in
return would trigger Fecundity and you get to draw a 1 card. The cycle let's you
net 1 mana for each card.
It's up to you how you would use the mana but the first deck I saw has
Whetstone as it's kill card. It utilizes Thran Foundry as a reset when the
player's library starts to empty.
Recently, ClusterBomb by Nicolas Labarre (forgot his email) appeared. The
deck is compose of 3 colors, Green, White and Black. The concept is the same
but the kill cards are Snake Basket, Whetstone and Serra Avatar. It also
uses Yawgmoth's Bargain as it's draw engine. ClusterBomb also used white
search cards such as Englightened Tutor and the mostly abused Academy Rector.
I decided to make my own version and somehow the deck works too. I'll present
it to you and you will be the judge if the new concepts sucks or works.
Let me start by showing you the deck list below. To easily help you understand
the deck, let's check again how the key cards work.
Saproling Cluster 1G, Enchantment
<1>, Discard a card from your hand: Put a 1/1 green Saproling creature token
into play. Any player may play this ability.
Fecundity 2G, Enchantment
Whenever a creature is put into a graveyard from play, that creature's controller
may draw a card.
Ashnod's Altar 3, Artifact
Sacrifice a creature: Add two colorless mana to your mana pool.

Lands (23)

10 Forest
2 Island
1 Swamp
4 Thran Quarry
4 Underground River
1 Gaea's Cradle
1 Phyrexian Tower
My choice of color for the deck is Green, Blue and Black. As you can see, I only
have 3 pieces for each key card of the combo. That is because 3 Vampiric Tutor plus
7 blue draw cards are added to the deck. I also found out that the combo can go off
having only Ashnod's Altar, Fecundity and 3+ creatures in play. This will generate
3-4 colored mana, 6 colorless mana, 3 new cards. Eventually (let's hope so), will
draw a Cluster, Snake Basket, Saproling Burst, Stroke or Prosperity.
Also, take note that I do not have Whetstone in this deck as a kill card.
Utility Cards
Snake Basket, Saproling Burst and Spontaneous Generation
I often find myself in a situation with the Altar and Fecundity in play but no Saproling
Cluster. If you can sacrifice your critters and have mana to cast any of this too, then
go for it. The Burst can let you draw 7 cards and gives you 14 mana while the Basket
give you X cobras and 2 time X mana. Just be sure that when you cast the Basket, you still
have enough mana for the critter generation. The Spontaneous Generation on the other hand
is very flexible if you have enough cards in hand. If you are already going off, you may
find that S. Generation helps alot.
Note: Creatures can also lead you to victory. Don't sac them to the Altar if you don't need
too. If you are able to pull off 5-20 tokens in turn 3 or 4 and you think you can win the
match from there via creature attack, then go for it. Just cross your fingers that your
opponent does not draw a Powder Keg.
Prosperity and Stroke of Genious
I prefer this two cards over Whetstone because of their flexibility. Whetstone depletes
each players library at the rate of 2 cards per 3 mana. It may also let you put the cards
you need in your graveyard. One advantage of Whetstone over the 2 cards is that Whetstone
effects as a kill card cannot be countered once it hits the table. Prosperity on the other
hand depletes your library at a rate of x cards at the expense of x+1 mana. The cards both
you and your opponent draw can be used as a resources. Most likely he cannot use those cards
until his turn because he lacks the mana to cast them except if your opponent is playing blue.
Stroke of Genious instant speed is flexible compared to Prosperity. It much more expensive
but it still very usable in this deck. It only needs 1 blue mana and often times you have the
colorless mana you need once the combo is in place. Stroke is your kill card and it's card
drawing power is undeniable in the early game. It also works well with the Cluster and Altar.
Also remember this, if you Prosperity for a lot of cards it means that you only need little
Stroke to finish your opponent.
Note: If you are desperate, don't be affraid to Prosperity or Stroke for 1 or 2.
Yawgmoth's Will
The cards speaks for itself. Often times your library is becoming depleted by the
Saproling Cluster and most of your need is in the graveyard. Well, to re-use those
spells, just cast Yawgmoth's Will.
Note: The combo can go off and you can win without even casting this spell.
Search Cards
Vampiric Tutor
I won't go into details of this. You just need to Tutor for the card you need.
Remember your deck have lots of ways to draw cards so be sure to cast this before
drawing. You can draw cards during draw phase or via Frantic Search, Prosperity,
Stroke and Fecundity's triggered effect.
Crop Rotation
Your mana curve is very tight. Crop Rotation adds flexibility. This can make a lot
of tricks and will pull you out of difficult situation when properly used. Just to
make an example, my opponent is trying to Treachery my Priest of Titania. He thinks
it's safe but before the spell resolves I Crop Rotation my Forest to get the Phyrexian
Tower and sac the poor Priestess. Treachery fizzles, he was tapped out and I was
able to pull my combo during my turn. Against Stampy deck, I often go for my Cradle
in turn 1 or 2 just to render their Gaea's Cradle useless.
Frantic Search
With the amount of colorless mana the deck will generate, Frantic Search untap
mechanics saves me a lot. Often times I just leave 1 untap Island when the
combo goes off. If I don't have an Island, I just Crop Rotation a Forest
and untap 3 lands that I need. When you are already in combo mode, cast this
using two generic mana from the Altar rather than getting the mana from your
lands. If I have 3 untapped lands, I tapped this 3 lands and float them for
2 colored mana. I get the 2 colorless from the Altar if possible.
Note: Frantic Search works well with Gaea's Cradle.
Mana Creatures
Priest of Titania, Birds of Paradise and Llanowar Elves
I can't say more about this but tap them first for colored mana if possible
before saccing the to the Ashnod's Altar.
Strategies vs common deck archtypes
This deck is experimental and mostly played in casual games. I never played
it in a tournament. I still haven't decided for a side board yet but most probably
Defense Grid for Blue, Chill for Red, Masticore for Weenies, Tangle Wire, etc.
It had won games against Sligh, Stampy, Ponza, Discard Black and Blue Control.
However the win ratio is not consistent. Remember that you are faster against
most decks in terms of mana deployment.
Against Stampy
Your faster in terms of Mana. Go play Cradle if you have a chance in order
to render their Cradle useless. All you need is to go to combo mode in order
to win.
Against Ponza, Sligh and Discard Black
Fecundity is the key. Play this at once if you get a chance. They will mostly
kill your creature but it will net you a card. I even win against Ponza after
a Wildfire. Once you are in combo mode all you need is an untapped Island or
Forest and 1 creature to win the game.
Against Control Blue
Good luck. Powder Keg destroys your day. Just capitalize on your mana resources,
lure him to countering your spells and pray that he does not have the mana to
counter your key cards once you cast them.
I guess that's it and somehow enjoyed reading this. If you have any questions,
concerns, flames, etc. feel free to email me at genesis@magictraders.com. Also
I would appreciate constructive criticism on how to improve the deck.
