Only 2 months have passed since the release of prophecy, but there is yet another set about to show up. There are less than 6 weeks until the first set of the new block will be released: INVASION
Reprints, new abilities (like Kicker), the re-introduction of gold cards and perhaps even common legends are the features of this set. There are big expectations but will Invasion really be as good as WotC promised? This preview tries to answer this question.

Here is all the information I was able to get:

The Invasion Cycle consists of the following 3 sets:

Invasion (October 2000)
Planeshift (Spring 2001)
Apocalypse (Summer 2001)

Invasion pre-release tournaments will run on September 23-24, 2000 and every participant will receive 1 starter and 3 boosters of Invasion.

The symbol of Invasion is the helmet of Volrath and can be found here:

The names of the Invasion Preconstructed decks will be:

Dismissal
Spectrum
Heavy Duty

But now onto the most interesting thing, the new cards and features of Invasion:


REPRINTS:

Fertile Ground - 1G
Enchant Land
Whenever enchanted land is tapped for mana Fertile
Ground adds one additional mana of your choice to
your mana pool.

Metathran Zombie 1U
Creature - Zombie

B: Regenerate Metathran Zombie.
(The Drowned reprint)

Ravenous Rats 1B

When Ravenous Rats comes into play target opponent
must choose and discard a card from his or her hand.

Crown of Flames - R

R: Enchanted creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn.
R: Return Crown of Flames to its owner's hand.

Soul Burn X2B
Sorcery
Spend only black or red mana for X.
Soul Burn deals X damage to target creature or player.
You gain 1 life for each B you spent for X, but not
more than the life total of the player before Soul Burn
dealt damage or the toughness of the creature.

Creature - Insect
0/1
Flying
B: Phyrexian Battleflies gets +1/+0 until end of turn,
you may not use this ability more than twice each
turn.
(Vampire Bats reprint)

Tranquillity 2G
Sorcery
Destroy all enchantments.

Maniacal Rage 1R
Enchant Creature
Enchanted creature gets +2/+2 and cannot block.

Lobotomy 2UB
Sorcery
Look at target player's hand and choose any of those cards other than a basic land. Search that player's graveyard, hand, and library for all copies
of the chosen card and remove them from the game. That player shuffles his or her library afterwards

And perhaps some more…(I'm sure that counterspell, disenchant, stone rain and such will also appear in Invasion)


GOLD CARDS/LEGENDS:

Yeah, they're really in the set, here's an official WotC statement:

'The Invasion card set features the return of gold cards and Legends,
plus new game mechanics aimed at encouraging true multicolor play'

I think the return of the gold cards has lots to do with the big amount of mono decks in MBC and T2 and I hope that they will really make the environment more various…

I also found out something more about multicolor legends:
There is a rumor, that there will be common multicolor legends, with casting cost and abilities like this:

Vodalian Zombie UB
Creature - Merfolk Zombie
2/2
Protection from green.

This is definitely a common and if it is indeed a legend, this will be a highly unusual and
interesting set. The other curious thing is the casting costs and the
protections, as they represent opposites on the Magic color wheel.

Other gold cards are these uncommons:

Instant
Counter target spell. You gain 3 life.

UUB
Instant
Counter target spell. That spell's caster loses 3 life.

Sorcery
Discard 1 card at random from your hand. If the discarded
card is a creature, put it into play.


Btw, there are also some multicolor lands like these ones:

Irrigated Field
Land
Irrigated Field comes into play tapped.
T: Add W to your mana pool
Sacrifice Irrigated Field, T: Add UG to your man
pool.

Sulfur Vent
Land
Sulfur Vent comes into play tapped.
T: Add B to your mana pool
T, Sacrifice Sulfur Vent: Add UR to your mana
pool.

The question is, if it's really useful, that the land produces mana of other colors if it is sacrificed. It is interesting for multicolor decks, but I would prefer the lands from 6th who produce 2 mana of their original color if one sacrifices them…


KICKER:

Kicker? What is it?
It is a new ability some of the creatures of Invasion have got. Here's a typical creature with Kicker:

Faerie Squadron U
Creature - Faerie
1/1
Kicker: 3U (You may pay an additional 3U when you
play this spell.)
If you paid the kicker cost, Faerie Squadron comes into
play with two +1/+1counters on it and has flying.

If you play a creature with Kicker you can choose whether or not you want to pay the additional cost(named 'Kicker'). If you pay it, the creature will be stronger. Kicker cards have the advantage that they can be normal creatures in the early game OR strong creatures in middle or late game.
e.g. Faerie Squadron can be either a 1/1 for only one blue mana or a strong 3/3 Flyer for 5 Mana. That's good, isn't it?

Some more creatures with Kicker are:

Duskwalker - B
Creature -Horror?
1/1
Kicker: 3B(You may pay an additional 3B when you
play this spell)
If you paid the kicker cost, Duskwalker comes into play
with two +1/+1 counters on it and has "Duskwalker
can't be blocked except by black and artifact
creatures."

Pouncing Kavu 1R
Creature - Kavu
1/1
Kicker: 2R (You may pay an additional 2R when you
play this spell.)
First strike
If you paid the kicker cost, Pouncing Kavu comes into
play with two +1/+1 counters on it and has Haste. (It
may attack and T the turn it comes under your
control.)

Prison Barricade 1W
Creature - Wall
1/3
(Walls can't attack)
Kicker: 1W (You may pay an additional 1W when you
play this spell.)
If you paid the kicker cost Prison Barricade comes into
play with a +1/+1 counter on it and can attack as
though it wasn't a wall.

Urborg Skeleton B
Creature - Skeleton 0/1
Kicker: 2 (You may pay an additional 2 when you play
this spell.)
B: Regenerate Urborg Skeleton
If you paid the kicker cost, Urborg Skeleton comes into
play with a +1/+1 counter on it.

Llanowar Elite G
Creature - Elf
1/1
Kicker: 3 (You may pay an additional 3 as you play
this spell.)
Trample
If you paid the kicker cost, Llanowar Elite comes into
play with two +1/+1 counters on it.

Benalish Lancer 2W
Creature - Knight
2/2
Kicker: 2W (You may pay an additional 2W as you
play this spell.)
If you paid the kicker cost, Benalish Lancer comes into
play with two +1/+1 counters on it and has first strike.


There are also some non-creature spells with Kicker:

Orim's Touch W

Kicker: 3 (You may pay an additional 3 when you play
this spell.)
Prevent the next 1 damage that would be dealt to target
creature or player. If you paid the kicker cost prevent
the next 4 damage that would be dealt to target creature
or player instead.

Kicker: 3 (You may pay an additional 3 when you play
this spell.)
Target creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn. If you paid
the kicker cost then target creature gets +5/+5 until end
of turn instead.

(This card is mysterious: Kavu is a new creature type and every color seems to have kavus. But are there that many that a special protection is useful!?)


A FINAL WORD:

Time will show, if Invasion can hold the promises that were made by Wizards of the coast.
(Mark Rosewater and Jeff Donais both stated (while attending the Worlds) that they had never before had so much fun in limited as with Invasion Cycle limited. Furthermore, MaRo was so excited about the set that he promised it would be one of these rare sets which will still be remembered after 5 years)

The new feature Kicker is very interesting as the reprints are. The gold cards can make the environment more interesting and various (I wasn't sad about having no gold cards in the last sets, though) and perhaps the 'Kavus' will soon be everyone's favorite creature type…
Who knows? But soon we will see more, when the first at least half complete spoilers appear…

I'm sure that Quirion Elves & Tribal Flames will see a lot of play!

Kicker ability looks great, now you can play small or big creature, depends on situation...

The followings are not 100% confirmed, but their credibility meter is over 90%:

Simoon from Visions is reprinted, as well as Soul Burn (we already knew this).


There are 5 uncommon Dual lands for the friendly colors that come into play tapped and don't have any other drawback.


There are 5 rare artifacts that cost 3 mana. Each of them mimics the dual lands for the friendly colors. This is a 2000% better version of Sol Grail.

that card that wins u the game if u control a critter and a land of each color kind of reminds me of the quest cards that inquest ran awhile ago.
