I forgot to address these points when they were posted.quote: Originally posted by iakae: Two things. First off, you shouldn't say to not accept pure email deals. You have to treat them with more caution, yes, but to just decline every pure email offer isn't the best way to go about doing business.
What I meant by this is that you should have them post or im you on MOTL so that you can verify their identity. I stand by that advise because of the mass of impersonator rippers lately. quote:
Secondly, you say that a ripper will always have every card that you need. That's not true.
Point well taken. What I should say is most rippers instead of rippers always. Since rippers will usually not set off every one of these alarms, this is one not to ignore. quote:
Also, to dispell rumors to the contrary, you shouldn't treat the Mods any differently in trades than you would a normal person. I'm definitely not saying that any of them are rippers, because that's simply not true. However, a person's rank on MOTL should have nothing to do with trusting that person during trades. Use every bit of caution that you can in EVERY deal.
Well, to some extent that is true, but I'd like to think that the mods were chosen to be mods for a reason. But, more importantly is that mods almost always have huge numbers of ref's (100+). However, I have had rippers try to tell me that they are mods on other sites to try to get me to send first. Your advice of using every bit of caution for every deal should probably be rule #1, though. __________________ You should read my article about how to avoid getting ripped off! http://classic.magictraders.com/ubb/Forum10/HTML/000266.htmlNever trust anyone, not even yourself. -Cobra Commander

thanks for posting the article on detecting because as you see im a new member myself ,and i would really be reluctant to trade online again if i got a bad trade which is really sad and i believe would probably be the case for most other new members.....But i don't understand why people with high ref's are reluctant to make deals with new members when it is routine for a new member to send first...i have already had quite a few of these experiences ive been looking for some cards for the past week or so that ive been part of the trading league and even people selling their cards and i make the offer of what they are asking i have been routinely pawned off and not replied to any suggestions on how to get easy reply's because maybe im doing something wrong......thanks alot for the info its priceless Sean ...

I don't belive that just because it's a wicked deal for you, you shouldn't just not do it. When I had about 10 references a guy offered me his:1x Cursed Scroll 1x Mogg Fanatic 1x Jackal Pup for my: 1x 7th Shivan Dragon He told me to simul send and I agreed since I couldn't ask him to send first because I didn't have the power to.. so.. 1 week passed by.. and.. I got my mint Cursed Scroll in the mail for a 7th Shivan Dragon. BTW, great article, I just put a link to it in my h/w link. __________________ MTG H/W List Non-MTG H/W List Buy/Sell List Ref List

Good article - I wish this had been here back when i first started trading online - I had made one, and only one, trade on MOTL - this guy wanted MY 4 Force of Will for HIS 3 Mana Drain (english/screwed condition 1 BadlandsWe simulsend, and I get back a Badlands and three DRAIN POWER.... I contact a mod (cant remember her name, it was years ago, she puts pressure on him... and over the next month I get three packages back with varying number of dual lands as a "bribe" to take him off the BTA... I report this, and the next week my FoW's along with two more duals show up... and he's on the Confirmed Bad List. Lesson: If its too good to be true, it probably is. I got eight extra dual lands out of this moron, my FoW's back, and his apology... and he rightfully got banned. It's taken me this long to get the courage to come back, but hopefully, I'll do better this time... Lesson: The ******* had only 8 refs - this time until I'm established with a decent number of refs... IF YOU DONT HAVE 20 REFS, DONT OFFER. __________________ Adm.
