Man...
That's real tough. Sorry about your loss, I can't say that I know what it's like, and I hope I never do.
But I can say that s*** happens, and there is nothing any of us can do about it (unfortunately). The cosmic ladle of s*** hovers above each one of us, and the rate at which it comes varies. It can be as small as a trickle, like me losing my pencil, or as large as a generous steamy heap that buries you, such as what happened to you.
As for my theories on trust, I say don't hardly ever. You have always got to watch your back wherever you go, and pure trust should only be put into the people that you are closest to (parents [not for everybody unfortunately, but for me], siblings, and others). You all know who those people that are worthy of your purest trust are. Some people may appear trustworthy, and appear a friend, but are not. For some of our 'friends', we may be none more than a convenience (as your friends that you play magic with may be, unfortunately). As the old saying goes, everybody has a price, no matter how hight it is, for doing certain evils. Apparently, that price for one of your friends was your binder or less.
You are right, it is a horrible thing that so many people are so easily 'bought' into doing bad things, but that is the way the world is, and we must all adapt.
It is the worst thing anybody can do to break another's trust in them, but our world is a truly evil place, and is, regrettable, beyond the point of no return
Again, sorry about your cards, hopefully the cosmic ladle of s*** will leave you be for a while .

Best wishes
~G

Hey Tedman, Life sucks, eh?

I had a box of my cards stolen from me too from University. I am very sure who it was that stole my cards but I had no proof. It was a guy that I sat and played with time and time again. I thought he was my friend. Anyways, I told campus security about it and bupkus was done about it.

That was only $400 worth at the time. Shivans, a two headed dragon, Vesuvan Dopplegangers, and so on.

I had $4000 stolen from my car once. I went to every card dealer I could think of and told them about my collection and sure enough, someone tried to pawn off my cards. The dealer called me, arranged a sting with the police and recovered almost half my cards. 36 dual lands and all my rare Legends missing. At least I got my Mox Ruby and Guantlet of might back. The police followed up on it and I got most of my legends back. Dual lands and Craploads else still missing today. Yay for the Police!!! At least I got something back!!!

Anyways...

TEDMAN, I know how you feel buddy. Tell you what... Email me you address and I'll see if I can send a couple of cards your way. I don't promise what you'll get but maybe you can trade for some recovery. Heck, you might even like a couple that I give you.

I do feel for you guys. I couldnt imagine what it would be like to lose my whole collection. All the money and time trading/selling to build it.

I guess I am one of the lucky few. I live in a fairly small town. Other than me, there are only like twelve or thirteen people in this town that play(atleast that I know of) and I have never heard any of them say that they had their cards stolen. Not every one is tight with everyone, but we all get a long with each other with no problems. Also, with so few people playing, if someone stole cards, I am sure they would find out who pretty quickly as most live in the same college dorm floor. Even Randy, the guy that runs the only shop in town, trusts most of us. There has been several occasions where he left me and a couple others in the shop alone while he ran down the street for a coke or something to eat.

All in all, I really cannot understand what would make someone want to steal another persons card. Seems like after about, what a year and a half to two years, in the Bad Trader Forum this would have changed, but it hasnt. I mean, I understand that the person may want the cards or just want to sell them or is a klepto or something. I dunno, maybe thats just me, there is no way in hell, no matter how desperate I was for a card(s), I could never steal from someone. I also think that the guys I play with feel the same way. I can trust them. There have been numerous times I have let some of the guys I play with borrow anything from full decks to P9. I always knew that they would return them. I wish I could make everyones playing experience like this, but I know that would impossible.

I understand how you feel. You work so hard at obtaining the cards, hard earned money spent to just have it taken away in a flash. Sickens me it does...

What else can you say? Not all of us people are scum. But I myself would not hesitate not to take magic cards, trust some people you did and that is what was taken advantage of. In all sense, trust no one.

So do I go around like a paranoid maniac? No. Ya just got to take the next step and be a little more cautious next time.

If you are in need of cards, email me and I will send you stuff I do not need. It could help ya get back on your feet. (This is free of charge.)

My team and I have encountered "thieves" be4, but we all looked out 4 eachother, so basically, you messed with me, you just ****ed off 4 other people too. Sorry bout your loss, I HATE THIEVES.....

I have had soooo many close calls, my heart literally stopped, I consider myself lucky, to have nothing big stolen as of yet. From all the places I have been to my mindless lapses of leaving my bag in...a bank machine branch off... middle of 3 ptq's..and who knows what else, its a wonder I havent encountered the fate you have...im lucky, VERY lucky in that respect.

All I can say is im sorry and adopt hope as your friend now, your stuff my turn up yet, if your a good person, karma has a way of evening out, remember:

Tedman,

I feel your pain. Having something stolen from you is so frustrating. The human race is scum and I think today's events only prove our theory more. How dare some one take something that isn't thiers...from someone the know. That's the part I have trouble comprehending. If it was in fact some one you know who took your bag, they are trash. A thief...what they need is to have something important stolen from them so they know how it feels. That'll put everything in perspective for them. Then they'll think twice before taking someone else's property. I'm really sorry about your bag. That's so low...I just can't believe it...Wait, yes I can.

I just wanted to say that I was there when it happened I don't know you because I just recently started going there again after a 4 year absence but if I hear anything I will let you know. Did you know someone else had their cards nabbed after yours were stolen?
He had only a small collection and not much really noteworthy but he was proud of what he did have and now doesn't. All I can say is I will not be letting my cards out of my sight ever again. I'm sorry for your loss and I hope the person(s) responsible are caught and will help if I can. Name's Jasen
see you Saturday if you are still going to go.

That was a very immature comment. Its not a good way to start your MOTL experience. I'm sorry about your loss Ted. I'm even more sorry for the people who have lost something more important than cards, their lives. Today's tragedy was terrible and it has changed America's history as we know it. I feel sympathy for the victims and their families.

Anyways, sorry to hear about your cards getting stolen Ted. The card shop I got to has experienced alot of thefts; as has another local shop. Yes, people are greedy and selfish, and alot of that has to do with the society we live in. Wealth measures your worth (as a person) in many cases to many people; subconsciously and consciously. Humans are imperfect, simple as that.

Yes, it was a horrible thing that was done to you. I apologize so incredibly, and I will send you some cards if you want them. I seem to remember a quote from a while ago, and indirectly quoted it basically said: "Children of today are foulmouthed, rude, and don't respect their elders." Would you like to know who said that? Socrates. The ancient greek philosipher. So, before I would go on looking at all the horror of today, and saying, that's not the way things used to be, I'd take a good hard look at how people felt "back in the Good 'Ole Days". I DO NOT CONDONE STEALING OR ANY OTHER FORM OF HURTING PEOPLE! I just want to stop the people for a second who are saying that people as a race are getting worse. (this could be true, I don't want to pass judgement of any kind) Take a look at the good side of people, and you will be pleasantly surprised at what you find. That said, *Tedman*, I am very sorry about your cards. I think it is terrible that this happened. Good luck

Well no offense Tedman, but maybe this is a wake-up call to you. Maybe someone up above is telling you to do something better with your life and to stop focusing on material items like magic cards.

Of course I doubt this will come as any consolation. It wouldn't to me. I would be very mad too. But in all seriousness, maybe it IS a blessing a disguise.

When people become material they start focusing on objects. There is no doubt that the person who took your cards is oviously a person that is totally material and has no respect for the feelings of other people, and only care about themselves.

I am not saying that you are a material person and a bad person for having magic cards and having lots of them, but it is always best to but an optimist, not a pessimist. Sometime bad things turn out to be good. And as i said above, maybe this really is a sign telling you to do something else with your life. You never can tell.

I do feel sympathy for you though. Losing something close to you is never easy. Although right now the loss of thousands of magic cards doesn't really come close to what just happened on Tuesday.

I guess in conclusion the most important thing I can say is to always look on the bright side of things and to evalute what is important to you as a person. After all, in X amount of years we will all be dead and gone, and I doubt that magic cards will help us after we die.

<Self-analyzation>

Then I guess I should be glad I handed that box of decks I found today to the TO.

Hopefully, the rightful owner reclaims it, but I'll probably never know. :\

</Self-analyzation>

Sometimes these decisions make me wonder, since if someone leaves a binder behind, and I take it, I = thief, and I am not a thief.

I found it in the afternoon and called back (literally) now and I was told the box wasn't there, so the person must've gotten it.

*Shrugs* Guess I'll never know. But I'd rather it be that way.

</me gives a reassuring pat on the back to all past theft victims, including himself>

I'm gonna tell you a story that happened to me some months ago (one year ago, in fact). It has two conclusions: luck can come back, but most importantly, NEVER stop to be as good as you can, even with people that did wrong with you.

In Sept. '00, I started a trade with Tan Baoren, the well-known ripper from Singapore (back then, he hadn't been banned from MOTL yet). The deal was including a Library of Alexandria on my side. Needless to say, I was ripped soon after. Then, about 6 months later, he contacted me under another name. I had earned many refererences and he had none, so he sent first. This was a big deal, including 2 Moxen (one Unli, one ALPHA, both MINT) on his side. When he gave me his address, by a miracle I rememered the previous deal. I immediately contacted a moderator to ask him whether I should complete the deal or compensate partially his victims, and to my surprise, he didn't tell me to compensate the victims. Temptation was big to end this deal and make him understand how it felt to be ripped off for so much, but I eventually sent him the cards (I still kept cards for the compensation for the LoA, of course) , and now I don't regret it.

Just my two cents.

First of, sorry for your loss man.

I can relate to your incident tedman, though not as severe in terms of quantity, I only lost a deck of cards. But the implications were probably the same.

I lost it in a club that was respected for fair trading and taking care of new members from being ripped off as well as getting them started on the right track.

It really ticked me off to think that the people that I play magic every weekend, as well as most whom ive regarded as close friends would stoop so low as to make a few extra bucks.

How did I recover? I took a step back, took a deep breath and went on with life's bumpy road.

Sit down and think for a moment what you lost so far. Nothing that you can never gain back again with the help of many good people here on MOTL.

In fact from this incident u gained more than you lost. What did u gain:

1. The knowledge to be very cautious at where u play now?

2. The fact that u didnt lose your sanity when this happened shows u have accomplished quite a bit.

3. The solid friendship and camaderie of MOTL'ers who are all too willing to help get you back on track

A Fresh Start? How Does One Do It When **** Happens?

To start your day off and wipe this away! Close your eyes.....and think of the most worst thing that could ever happen to you that would totally freak the living sanity out of you...

Then compare it with what you've lost.

Feels better right?

Hope it helps.

Not true. There have always been good people and there have always been bad people.

Normally I would scold someone for allowing their cards to get stolen but if you were in a group of 30 "friends and peers", I'm honestly speechless. It was probably an accident at first and whoever took it decided to keep it after he realized what happened.

Ha HA!!! you deserve it!!

Hmmm, perhaps the most controversial post in this thread.....well here's my take on this: As rude and merciless as Cursed Volrath sounds, it is hard to remove all the blame from Tedman. Yeah, he got swindled but he could have prevented it (as opposed to meep's incident where he couldn't guard his car 24/7)

Tedman, I'll send you some cards if you IM me at reinhart81 (you pay shipping b/c it's a lot of cards)

TedMan. As other good MOTL members have said, im sorry for what has occured. I too agree most people are scum. I havent lost any cards yet but i did however lose my Playstation 2 with ALL my games, controller, memory card and adaptor. I would say around 500 dollars worth. Im not sure how to feel. Sad, yes of course but not a tear or anything. I guess disappointment. Dissappointed that people have to steal now a days. And we always have the question, why? Why me? This is the 1st time ive ever been robbed. No idea who could of done it. Surely not my TRUE friends that i have known for quite some time now and hang out with nearly everyday. But then again it gets you to thinking. Who can you trust? Anyone? How can you really be sure they are your friends. Its a sick world we live in and can only wonder what the future holds....

I dont think its so much that the human race is fundamentally "bad" as our core of values is gone.

I know in America our society is more concerned with the welfare of a mental state of mind then there is with a set of basic values designating right and wrong. All that crap about "my mommy didnt love me enough" is the excuses of weakminded individuals looking to excuse their actions rather then take responsibility for them. If we started treating children like miniadults that need to be taught (and in any way that works) rather then sending them to their room full of video games and their cell phones as a punishment then we can raise decent human beings with a sense of responsibility instead of criminals who see nothing wrong with walking off with stuff that doesnt belong to them.
