Hey gang!
I've been playing the game of magic for 4 or so years, and it's been getting better ever scince i made my first deck, which i called my "double deck"
its simply a 120 card deck. lots of newbies i know cant keep their decks thin at 60, and i was no exception. deckmaking is an art, you have to be very openminded and have a clear focus on what your deck is supposed to do. What most decks focus on is winning, (at least to MY knowledge) but a large portion of those decks out there don't really have a clear method of accomplishing that. I have heard of and adapted this method of deckmaking from a pro tour player, (i don't know his name, sad to say) and have used it in making all of my decks. the way is easy and can be accomplished in 3 steps-1. Get the marble for your elephant
2. Carve out your elephant
3. Rub out all the rough parts
Now, i know what your'e thinking, your'e screaming mentally, WTF is this guy talking about? elephants? Why should I believe some guy who has been banned from WotC stores?
(Well, that last comment I hope you're not thinking, and to whom it may concern, i'm sorry.)
The steps are from a sculptors point of view, and can be easily explained.
1. "Get the Marble for your elephant" means that you find the cards you want to put in your deck. for example, white weenie could be your elephant, or your deck theme. just pick up all the white cards in your pile and set it aside to put it in your deck.
2. "Carve out your elephant." You're elephant represents the deck theme, HOW it wins. This step means you're gonna take out all teh cards that don't represent your elephant, and make sure you keep the elephant, which means take only the cards that Fit into or take advantage of the theme you're focusing on. Put the rest away, they're not gonna be in your deck.
Now make your deck.
for example, for white weenie, Pianna, nomad capt. fits well because of all the weenies a white weenie deck is supposed to have, and pianna's ability is magnified. pianna is a good idea for white weenie. Lightning bolt is a must-have for sligh, and spiritmonger must always be used in G/B decks focusing on beatdown.
3. "Carve out the rough parts." Make sure your land count fits into the theme too.
(Ex. White weenie doesn't require that much land, the cards being all very low cast)
cut your deck from 70 cards to 60. work out your SB.
Now, go out and take your "elephant" against other different elephants.
Playtest your deck and refer to step 3.
Your performance will get better, deckwise.
Mind you, you MUST keep your focus on making your elephant, you don't want to make it a pikachu or something undesirable. Pikachus, yellow or marble, don't last long in this enviornment =P
I trust You know how to balance out your land, so i won't get into THAT.
Just remember a pro tour guy who had the elephant carvers philosophy, and make sure you carve the best elephant!
(Stomp all pikachus too )
Sincerely,
Mr.401
