I'm buying an altered art Sol Ring that was altered and signed by a man named James King. I just like the art; I have no idea who J. King is. Here is a disamiguation page on Wikipedia:

The first thing that comes to mind is an extremely good Magic player who was winning Vintage tournaments with ICBM Oath not that long ago.

Since Tha Gunslinga is an extremely good Vintage player as well, I would ask him about it.

Alterations are often done by players--much more often than by the card's original artist him/herself. Sometimes, these artists/players will also sign their alterations, much like more traditional artists sign their works. If an altered card bears a signature, your best bet is that the signature belongs to the person who altered the card.
