References should expire after a period of time (Say, 1 year after they were received) - This will avoid problems such as that we recently saw with Lord Of The Undead 666 where an old account was used (Possibly by its original owner, or by someone else) to scam a bunch of users.

If old accounts lost all their references, it would prevent hackers or their original users from entering these accounts and using them for scams.

I have been scammed twice: Once on here, and once on MTGSalvation. In both cases, the user who scammed me had over 20 references, but had not traded for several years.

Uh, negative sire. What about me? I have like one ref in the last year or so... Doesn't make me less honest than, say, someone who makes 30 5 dollar deals...

If you have doubts dont trade with the person or use a third party . Its not fair to members who have been here for along time to send first to some kid who racked up 30 refs in a month by trading common for common just to rip someone .

One isolated incident does not a problem make. If someone decides to rip, they're going to find a way to do it. If people pay attention and take proper steps to protect themselves, they're going to minimize the risk that they take. One of the warning flags is someone with a lot of refs, but none or very few in the past year or so. There's no reason to punish those traders who have put in the hard work over several years to build up a lot of references just because some people don't actually look at the references themselves closely enough.

How hard is it to click on their references page and take a look? You can ctrl->F for 2008 or 2007. Don't be an idiot, just make sure you protect yourself and you won't get scammed.

Ok, valid points.

What if we just put an expiry time on accounts, so that if you don't log in for say, 1 year, your account dies.

I find it rediculous that as a new trader I'm forced to trade with a bunch of people with no references for the past 2-3 years who could very well be scammers, yet am I forced to send first since I have the lower number of references, despite the fact that all of them are recent trades.

If you've been here a long time, you're probably rarely hit by scammers anyway since you have the higher refs. For those of you who have good refs, consider when you first arrived - If you thought every second deal you made had the possibility of being a scam, you wouldn't feel that it's a very safe trading community would you?

You're still missing the point. It's up to you, as a trader, to evaluate those you're dealing with to decide if they're good traders or not. MOTL can't hold your hand and protect you from the big bad world. You have all of the tools necessary to make good decisions available, you just need to use them. You can look at someone's references and see when they received them, who they were with, how much the deals were for.

You aren't forced to trade with anyone. If you think they're suspicious, just walk away and find someone else to trade with. I've personally taken a break from MOTL for over a year, and am not a scammer or ripper. Should I have been punished and lost 50 or 60 references just because I was busy with other things for a while?

Dear God no expiration date, especially for those who have been active in the past. I understand the pruning of inactive accounts who were not as active.

I know I have taken an extended leave of absence for whatever reason, as many others have. And it would just plain suck if I was to come back to not only have no account but no references. That's just not fun.

As a trader you should be checking references for whoever you are trading with no matter the amount of references on ANY site. I know if I go to other sites which have a reference system, I will not send first to those who have been inactive for a significant amount of time there is just as much risk as sending first to a new user.
