Topic: Location requirement for all users

I just thought it would be helpful to all of us in trading/buying/selling here if everybody were required to at least put their country for location.It can be quite annoying to work out a deal with somebody who doesn't have their location listed only to find out you'll now need to factor in registered mail (or even if the deal is worth it for that distance). I know you can say just to ask them but when browsing lists it can be a pain to ask somebody where they're from before posting a trade.. It just seems a little off-putting.

It would be easy enough instead of having a blank field to have a drop down box for country__________________

Seriously mods.. I think this is the first time i've ever seen both caquaa and Mr. C both agree on something in their first post to the same thread without telling somebody off. It seems like a done deal to me. P.S. Sorry guys but I couldn't help myself. I know everybody will laugh at this one and agree

Hmmm, how should this be implemented for current users? Sounds like it will be a bit of programming work to make it mandatory for people to fill in their location, not to mention having to sift through people who have things like "earth" listed as their location.__________________

I'm sure that's a good part of the reason why it's never been implemented. There are far too many people who have "funny" stuff listed in their location line and making them all change it would be a little too labor intensive. I guess you could just threaten karma smacks to active users who don't update the info. __________________

A country drop-down could be added. Getting even most people to use it, there's the problem. Just look at how many people don't use the foil tags or all of the other things that make trading easier, what makes you think they'd change their location? No, issuing karma smacks for it will not happen.__________________

Couldn't you make it to where when a new member signs up, they have to put a country of origin or they don't get an account? It doesn't help with current members, but it's better than nothing.

As long as it wasn't like the TA/Sales forum where there was a default that is misused all the time... just make it start blank and be a required field. If it was done that way whenever someone edited their profile it'd force them to update as well so over time the problem would slowly weed itself out and make trading a little easier. __________________

It could be done that way, but it's not going to have any significant impact for a long time that way.

I think you underestimate how slowly this would fix the problem. Many people have never changed their profile since they created their account. I'm not saying it can't or shouldn't be done, just that it's not going to help nearly as much as we'd like for the foreseeable future. The average person in the trading forums either has already set their location in a usable manner or has no interest in doing so for whatever reason, thus wouldn't be likely to change it in the future. __________________
