I have an opportunity to play in a 45-man Modern tournament in February. I have a Legacy Junk deck I love but have not played any Modern. Here is my Modernized Junk deck.

I am looking for any suggestions on how this deck should side board against any of the better Modern decks I will likely see. Splinter Twin, American Delver, Jund, Pod, and Affinity are the usual suspects as I understand it.

I noticed the tourney decks don't seem to be running path to exile or knight of the reliquary. Can't really figure that out though.

Any help or cards changes/additions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for any suggestions!
Tim

I run an unorthodox version of this deck that does indeed run KotR and Path. I can't figure out why you wouldn't want them either, I think they shine. Regardless of whether or not you put those in, you should really squeeze in that 4th Liliana.

My sideboard is a little different too, and I do tend to change it up a lot, butit seems to be working well. Looks something like this at the moment:

2x Kataki, War's Wage
2x Pithing Needle
3x Extirpate
1x Maelstrom Pulse (I only run 1 in main)
4x Leyline of Sanctity (I have a lot of burn in my meta)
1x Thoughtseize
1x Thrun, the Last Troll
1x Scavenging Ooze (also only run 1 in main)

Other good board cards: Linvala, Stony Silence, Rest in Peace, Nihil Spellbomb, Gaddock Teeg, Creeping Corrosion, Krosan Grip/Nature's Claim. I've even boarded 4x Chalice of the Void when I was seeing a lot of UR aggro decks.

I don't know much about how to build the best Junk deck, but I can at least help a bit with sideboarding against my deck of choice. As a Kiki-Pod player, the card I hate to see most is Torpor Orb (also Linvala, but you usually only see that from the Mirror). Stony silence is fine, but I would only run it if I expect a lot of affinity. Against Kiki/Domri Pod, Stony Silence is just not that great, given that with Junk, it's going to be more of an attrition matchup, and even just Finks+Township can be enough value to hold the board until you can find an answer to Silence or just outvalue them with Domri. Not to mention that you can very easily just natural combo them with a stony silence out as you have 8 combo pieces between 2 Kikis and 6 enablers. And while Melira is more reliant on Birthing Pod to win via the combo, it's also an even better value deck, where you can have all the stony silences you want, but will still lose to Witness+Reveillark/Township+Persist or other shenanigans. On the other hand, Torpor Orb pretty much shuts everything down. Neither version can combo, the Township-Finks/Redcap plan is much worse since you don't get the CITP abilities, Witness is shut off, so the first Reveillark is the only Reveillark, etc.

Thanks so much for the advice!

Anyone else see any decks that are popular in modern that I may have trouble with? Any that this deck should handle well?
Just trying to get an idea of how to board.

Thanks!

This doesn't seem like a bad idea. I think to start I'm just going to sub Hierarchs in for the Deathrites, but I'm digging the Loam idea. Seems solid with both Liliana and Lingering Souls.

OK I have updated my final list. Just trying to decide between these 3 utility lands to be tutored up by my knight of the reliquary.

Gavony Township
Vault of the Archangel
Cavern of Souls

and which of these 2 end up as my last 2 cards in my sideboard.

2 Engineered Explosives
2 Torpor Orb
2 Timely Reinforcements

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated!!!

After last weeks 3-1 I made some tweaks and ended up with what I think is a much better and consistent deck.
Here is what I played at yesterdays 40 man PTQ.

CREATURE(15)
4 Dark Confidant
4 Knight of the Reliquary
1 Loxodon Smiter
2 Scavenging Ooze
4 Tarmogoyf

NON CREATURE(22)
3 Abrupt Decay
1 Duress
2 Engineered Explosives
3 Inquisition of Kozilek
4 Liliana of the Veil
2 Lingering Souls
2 Maelstrom Pulse
3 Path to Exile
2 Thoughtseize

LANDS(24)
1 Forest
2 Godless Shrine
4 Marsh Flats
2 Overgrown Tomb
1 Plains
2 Swamp
2 Tectonic Edge
2 Temple Garden
3 Treetop Village
1 Vault of the Archangel
4 Verdant Catacombs

SIDEBOARD
1 Abrupt Decay
1 Bojuka Bog
2 Golgari Charm
2 Kitchen Finks
1 Lingering Souls
1 Loxodon Smiter
2 Stony Silence
1 Thrun, the last Troll
2 Timely Reinforcements
2 Torpor Orb

I knew a large part of the field would be Zoo,Infect,Affinity,Burn, with some UWR Control,Pod,Twin, and a few home brews.
I decided to again skimp on Grave Hate in my sideboard and hope the 2 Scavenging Oozes and 1 Bojuka Bog in the side could get the job done if needed. I know this deck has had troubles against quick aggro so I sided heavily for it. I was not disappointed.

Round 1-Big Naya Tie
We split games 1 and 2 after very long removal packed play. It seemed that if top decked a creature, he topped removal and vice versa.
Game 3 went to time with me having enough to kill him on turn 6. Tieing round 1 stinks.
Good-So much removal, so many threats. No real mis-plays. Sided out my Thoughtseizes and Bobs for removal and life gain with life being at a premium. Maybe should have just stuck with the original deck though.
Bad-Liliana +1 into a Smiter. Thats my move Frown
Sideboard-IN Smiter, Thrun, 2 Finks,2 Timely Reinforcements OUT Bobs/Thoughtseize

Round 2-UWR Control Win 2-0
Games 1 and 2 went exactly the same. I kept hands with 1 or 2 swamps and 3 discard.
I rip his hand apart early and leave him with only land. Kill his only creature that hits the board.
He does land a Runed Halo and names Knight of the Reliquary, but I use it to tutor up Treetop Villages and end it pretty quick.
Good-The discard package worked just as it should have. This was probably the best my deck played.
Bad-This was probably the best my deck played, had I not pulled all that discard it could have gone much differently.
Sideboard-IN Thrun/Smiter OUT 2 Engineered Explosives

Round 3-Jund Tie
Almost an exact reply of game 1 but with a black splash for Thoughtseize and Bob.
He wins game 1 after a little bit of a mis-play on my part. He had Chandra on board and manland and played a goyf. I had Liliana and a path in hand. I pathed his goyf instead of holding the path for the man-land and making him sac the goy. Ultimately lost due to Chandra Ultimate and his removal. Game 2 was all me but he held off long enough to give us only 10 minutes for game 3. Game 3 was not quick but I felt I had it in hand. Had it not gone to turns I had the board set and his hand stripped. It would only have been a matter of turns. I had Liliana out and was just making him discard or play his only card in hand.
Good-Again tons of threats and tons of removal.
Bad- A couple mis-plays. This deck does require you to make good decisions all the time.
Sideboard-Just like Naya, you need life! IN Smiter, Thrun, 2 Finks,2 Timely Reinforcements OUT Bobs/Thoughtseize. I did miss the seizes though.

Round 4 - Affinity (NOOOOOOOOOoooooo!) Loss 2-1
Game 1 I win the roll and play an Engineered Explosives at 0. He drops his entire hand on the table and during my turn I EE at 0 and take out a Mox Opal and a Ornithopter. He fills right back up with back to back draw spells and I am just too slow and cant do anything against his Etched Champion.
Game 2 We go back and forth and I remove alot of his creatures and keep him at 3 artifacts for a bit but cant seem to get him to 2 so I can kill that Etched Champion. I hit with a 2-1 on Pulse leaving just his champion and 2 artifact lands and make him sac it to Liliana and go on to crush. He did land Rest in Peace both games though making my goyfs/finks/lingering souls/knight far worse Frown
Game 3 I muck to 6 with only a basic forest and basic swamp for lands in hand. I do have 2 Stony Silence, 1 Timely Reinforcements, and and Engineered Explosives in hand. I gamble that I will pull a White source by turn 2-3. Well I dont. And although I EE to hold him off for a bit, and pull back to back abrupt decays and a Golgari Charm, I never stick that Plains and lose turn 7 or 8. I hold him off for as long as I can with 2 LS tokens at a time but ultimately lose again to Affinity.
Good-I guess taking 1 game against Affinity. I hate this matchup. It may just be bad luck so far though. Golgari charm did 3 for 1 him 1 game so that was nice.
Bad-Never getting to play a Stony Silence, Mis-playing Engineered Explosives (should have set it to 1 or 2)
Sideboard-In 2 Stony Silence, 2 Golgari Charm, 2 Timely Reinforcements, 2 Kitchen Finks OUT 4 Knight of the Reliquary, 2 Thoughtseize, 2 Bob

Round 5 Infect Win 2-0
This is a really great matchup for us.
Game 1 he got me up to 9 poison counters by turn 3. But I was able to stabilize and land Liliana and sac away or discard every card he had. Liliana was the best card in this matchup and engineered explosives was a close 2nd. He did play Apostle's Blessing and Vines of the Vastwood and Spellskite but untargeted removal is amazing against him.
Good-Against Infect we can Thoughtseize and fetch untapped shocklands all day. Winning with 9 poison counters is awesome.
Bad-Nothing except almost dieing to a spellskite with 3 Exalted effects from lands was strange. I was down to 4 life and 1 poison counter in game 2.
Sideboard- In 1 Abrupt Decay, 2 Golgari Charms 1 Lingering Souls, Out 4 Knight of the Reliquary

Had to drop after Game 5 but finished 2-1-2. And I would have definitely won at least one if not both of my ties.
Overall the deck did almost exactly what I thought it would. I loved the addition of 2 mainboard Engineered Explosives but I think that is very meta-dependant. I switched a Duress in for a Thoughtsieze and went with a 3-2-1 split (Iok-seize-duress) and really did not regret it. Every time Duress hit I was able to take the same card I would have for Thoughtseize and saved the 2 life.
I moved 1 Loxodon Smiter to the main and moved my 4th Decay and 3rd Lingering Souls to the sideboard. There were 2 games where Vault of the Archangel was huge so I like that I kept it in. Having deathtouch/lifelink on my LS or Timely Reinforcements tokens saved me in Match 1 against huge Knight of the Reliquaries. I didn't use the Torpor Orbs all day but other than that sided in every other card at least once.
I wish I had a better matchup than Affinity but later found out the Top 8 had 3 Affinity decks (including the one I lost to).
