I just recent got into playing EDH, and I want to try and build my own deck. I've been told that Riku of two Relfections, Animar, Soul of Elemnts, and Maelstrom Wanderer go nicely together, by I'm looking for cheaper alternatives which are cheaper and are simpler. Any tips for deck types/commanders would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!I don't know what the deck types mean, so I selected extended.

Well, the questions then are, what colors do you like and what do you enjoy doing in magic?

Building a mono or two-color deck is probably best, if you are on a budget. What is the meta like where you will be playing? Casual or competitive? Are there house rules that you need to be mindful of? Are infinite combos frowned upon? __________________ Wisconsin - smells like dairy air!I collect Granite Gargoyles. Send them my way.

For commander, this bottom part is the most important thing to consider. Does your group play ruthlessly and anything not on the short ban list is fair game? Are there certain cards your play group tries to avoid? If you are just starting and on a budget, I recommend getting one of the new mono color prepackaged products. They are honestly pretty solid out of the box, and with a few card replacements can be very competative. If you are set on building your own deck, be sure to include cards that allow you to draw extra cards or ramp your mana. If you are behind on cards or mana, it's very difficult to win in Commander.

The pre-built commander decks are a great place to start. All of the Commander 2014 decks are monocolored, and the Commander 2013 decks are tricolored. All of the decklists are easy to find online. My suggestion is to pick the colors you like to play most, pick up a pre-built deck in those colors, and then swap cards until you make it your own. Of the C13 decks, I personally had the most fun with Power Hungry.

Also, the strongest colors in EDH are probably blue and black, as they are the best colors for using your opponents' own resources against them. Green is also strong because you'll have so much mana to work with, and green has a lot of enchantment/artifact destruction. Red and white have some great options, but they're definitely more challenging to build with. A lot of the pre-built decks include the staples you need to build other decks, like Sol Ring, Command Tower, Swiftfoot Boots, and mana fixing.
