This forum system doesn't support stickying threads, so we just have to up threads like this once in a while to remind people. __________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. Trade them to me, please! Report rules violations.

Trading Tip: Stronghold didn't have rares, so there's really nothing of value in it. Don't let some guy rip you off by trying to get $12 in value for his Sliver Queen. It's a common after all.

Don't clutter this thread with idiocy like this. This isn't the place to be funny. Use a little common sense and realize that people reading this thread for information are likely to be new players who won't get the inside joke you're referring to and might actually take it seriously. __________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. Using headers both the sender and recipient of an email can be faked easily. To ensure the person belongs to the specific MOTL account the best way is a direct contact via forum (PM or post). Also I miss the possibility to contact trading partners via MOTL. Especially if REFs are older this can make sure that the address is correct and the account isn't used by someone else. Besides - good job :-)

While technically correct that both the sender and recipient of an email can be faked, it really doesn't matter. If the sender fakes the from address, then when the target replies to confirm the trade, the email will go to the person being impersonated, not the scammer, and that's the end of that. Although it can be done, it wouldn't be a successful scam. I'm not sure what you mean about missing the ability to contact previous refs. How to do that's mentioned in the tips already. __________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. Trade them to me, please! You can still change the reply-to mail in the headers. Simple example: Ripper sends a faked mail with the email address motluser@yahoo.com and changes the replyto address to: motluser@yahoo.net or m0tluser@yahoo.com. I'm sure that 99% of all people do not check to which address they reply.Even better would be: Faking the email, pretending that you'll leave town next morning and you'll only be reachable via your mobile organizer with a different email address. quote: Originally posted by nderdog: I'm not sure what you mean about missing the ability to contact previous refs. Hey nderdog Just a little suggestion... maybe it's just silly, but I think that your list of tips could be really useful if MOTL itself sends a copy of it to all the new members. I mean, when someone creates an account on MOTL, he would receive a welcoming PM/e-mail with this list of tips in it. Just a thought

My original plans were to get this information into a prominent place somewhere, but once it's been fine-tuned (yes, I realize it's almost 4 years old, but even today I found some stuff that I thought needed tweaking) I would like to then take it to the MOTL staff and decide how to best get the information out there. Being part of the welcome email is a definite possibility. __________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. Trade them to me, please! As a general tip that has helped a number of locals to start using MOTL, I always suggest that new people to MOTL only trade with people that have more than 50-100 refs. Usually these are legit traders and I have yet to have a problem with someone with this amount of refs or more~~~Edit (after slipping on a banana peel when I first made the post): Thanks for the key reminder about what I overlooked: tons of small trades worth less than $20 to build up refs. I should have suggested earlier that, like everyone else suggested, as a further caveat, that you make sure that the person has a significant number of deals worth $50 or more each. What that significant number is will be subjective, but I would estimate 10 or more deals over $50 would be a fair range. Anyhow, thanks for keeping this post available as it is a great idea! __________________ #3 in References in VirginiaOfficial Magic Dealer for Fun N Games Live in WV, Blacksburg, VA or near Roanoke, VA? For the most part thats exactly what I do. I will always look to see if they have 50+ refs. Though sometimes refs don't mean a whole lot. I have seen people with 50 refs rip someone off. I have even seen people with 100 refs rip someone off. I always look at the refs to see the dollar amount of each trade, which is on the right side of each ref. If they have 50 refs but they are all $5 trades for "ref building" purposes, you should be careful if you are thinking about doing a large deal with them. Do not send first in this situation.. Do a third party. Sometimes doing a third party with a mod is the difference between getting ripped and not getting ripped, even if it costs extra money to do. Another piece of advice is ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS put delivery confirmation on a package >$10, whether it's a $10 trade or a $1000. For .75 your basically paying pocket change to make sure it arrives and you don't see a case of "reverse ripping" happen. The problem a lot of people have is if they send it without tracking, you have no idea if it got there or not.. You are going by their word, and they will ALWAYS win that battle, even if they did receive it. Hopefully this helps any new traders.

In light of the kevin newton situation, probably a good time to remind people how to protect themselves.__________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. Trade them to me, please! Report rules violations. Remember the Auctions Board!

I would modify this slightly. Your first 10 or so trades should be exclusively with mods or people over 500 refs. Or, alternatively, you can come into chat (either click the link on the homepage or load up your favorite irc client and go to irc.efnet.net channel #motl) and ask about who is prominent in the community. Most of the people in chat aren't going anywhere, and you can find nder and jaz there to see who has a good reputation. As for shipping, protect yourself. If you're worried you might get ripped, use DC (nder does this for every trade so there's never an issue) and maybe insurance. Ship in penny sleeves and toploaders, no more than 2 cards per regular-sized toploader. Use bubble mailers for more expensive items. If you're ever unsure about how to proceed with a trade, ask someone more experienced.

In light of the recent mod impersonation going on, probably a good time to remind people of ways to make sure to protect themselves. Note that Item #3 pertains even more when someone is stepping in to assist with a trade as a 3rd Party.__________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. I'm a new user, and I had a question. If two people with low references wanted to ask for a third party trader to which they could reliably send their cards for a large trade, where would you post to inquire, or how would you go about doing it?Thanks.
