The investigation was quick, and the response was swift. Wizards of the Coast has already sniffed out the people responsible for the New Phyrexia leaks, and has dropped the banhammer. 2010 Player of the Year runner-up and Level 8 Pro player Guillaume Matignon was given a 3 year ban by the DCI, and Level 8 Pro player Guillaume Wafo-Tapo, Martial Moreau, and David Gauthier were each handed 18 month suspensions. Wizards’ explanation and all the juicy details can be found after the jump!

The fact that the pix had the guy's MSN open probably helped them in their quest.

In conclusion: Don't share things you shouldn't be sharing, and don't share things with randoms on IRC.

Well, don't stand on the edge. Though I've been surprised to see certain names here.

they confessed to it. Sounds like the leek was accidental and they feel bad for doing it. They lose out on a ton of money.

They should have not been suspended. Wizards should never give them inside information to begin with because they do not work for them; that is unfair for the rest of the regular players. Wizards had this coming because they trust players way too much.

I do not think they should be punished at all

David Explain how it's happen...

Sorry it's From French forum so in French...

Sorry it's so From French forum in French ...

Well, I decided to give this post a bit for my version of events vis-à-vis all the mess I've caused.
You can also retain or believe what you want, to the point where I am, I am more than 100 000 by gravy, but I still want to give my point of view of history from a clear conscience. (So to speak)

Monday 18 in the evening, we talk on MSN with Martial NPH, and yarn needle, he said, "I give you a list if you shut your mouth" and send me the Godbook the chat window. Martial knows me well enough, I think he knows how it can happen to be con on the forums, (Mr Science Infuse, sometimes pathological liar / exaggerator and fully imbued with his person as everyone has note: I am aware and am really trying to change that image for some time, but in vain, I remained too ...) but he also knows me really well outside: we speak of the hours and hours of anything and everything as soon as you pick up on msn since 3 / 4 years was moderate on MT assembly, we had crossed several times irl and I have proved (I think) that I could rely on several occasions. There was really no reason to think that I **** on this one, being the person who knows me probably the best of all the mid MTG.

19 (at night or the next day I know too much), being connected to the channels and mtgfrance # # MetalCraft (the cat from my ex-team league where magic was still halfop or moderator before WOTC demand my ban), channel that I frequent for 1 or 2 years every day I'm awake, where people who I trust (I am absolutely sure that person will not go throw anything out of these as I ask) I begin talking about I give NPH and 3 screens on 2 channels as in the log Pamy. And these screens came on the net "sebas" (posted on MTGsalvation), a guy who was connected to the channel of # MetalCraft. Wizards contacted him, he told everything and it was nothing for his cooperation: http://www.gatheringmagic.com/prank-blog-post-reports-arrest-for-nph-spoiling/

I know I was extremely awkward, I've done anything from end to end and that this whole story is entirely my fault. But really I knew it could have consequences as disastrous, it just seems unreal that just happened. I am devastated and very sorry for Martial and Guillaumes.

Regarding the article by Caleb and his falsified quotes in halves, or reconstituted with sentences of what I have said in the last 3 months:

- In the first paragraph, as the channel of # mtgfrance, I said that I had the spoiler list on # MetalCraft.

- 2nd paragraph, I am absolutely sure and certain that the guy has falsified 9 words out of 10 log and invented a story from scratch: I never said being a writer, I never said or work for Watchdamatch live in Nantes, I never said I personally knew any of the two Williams. When Caleb asked me once how I had the list in the first place, I told a guy I had been given, and I assumed that his source had been to write articles without he never mentioned any name. (I posted the log on the topic to explain when Julian Watchdamatch am told that I had dared to say that I worked for him, and as soon as I learned that I was talking to the guy on irc to clarify and say that it was not the case ... I had C / C the conversation in a post on Watchdamatch yet)

- After the conversation with jfc was something in private 1vs1, I knew it was not even possible to get such a thing other than one of the two interlocutors .. and besides, I am certain of never having said that Wafo personally sent me any files. I said in private conversation that it was coming from him, but I said never to have received it directly from him. I do not know if anyone can tell me where I can find my irc logs (the ones I posted on watchdamatch were luckily still on my irc I had not closed), but I'm here to make screens, provide compelling evidence that this big ******* invented stories from scratch to hurt me.

And I have responded to the interview of the guy or the mail wizards only after consulting Martial whether I could respond, he said it had happened and name etc ...

Otherwise, caleb foo added a dozen people on Facebook and 1 person of my MSN (Impulsaxl the conversation I had on the screen) who know me from near and far (including my mother)

Another rumor crap by our dear caleb, for 2 days, we came to see me talking to me as if I Guillaume Matignon on MTGO. And no, I have nowhere said that I was Guillaume Matignon.

Moreover, thanks to tapp Attrigme who "leak Phyrexia david gauthier" on google, after I told him about my ban on MTGO, he accidentally found the draft of the article on pastebin 2 or 3 hours before that it is posted on ChannelFireball, which allowed me to understand that the guy had asked for an interview by mail all nicely that I accepted because I had nothing to hide and would use my identity for publishing this interview and for make the link with fake quotes. So I could warn him that I did not want to be nowhere mentioned in any of these items before his latest article is posted, while asking him how he got the email address Impulsaxl and why. He told me several times between time to end with a "too late, I submit the article.

Wizards is pretty stupid if they thought nothing would happen giving someone outside of the company access to the god book.

Naturally all the people responsible for the spoiling are idiots too, but that goes without saying.

absolutely they should be suspended, matignon breached a NDA, should be glad and lucky wotc didnt file suit against them for damages (tho estimated losses are hard to evaluate), why would wotc continue to give lvl 8 benefits to someone who obv broke contract?

if anything, i think they got a light sentence on the suspension.

good riddance i say. Sure we all want to know the spoilers as early as possible but i think most of us want it legitimately and not causing any monetary damages. Wizards usually do card previews by now with some interesting articles etc. but this week it is all boring videos/wallpapers etc. because everything has been spoiled.

well on a side note i hope those pro players got a day job since they wont be getting money from magic anytime soon...

You should really stop posting until you have something intelligent to say.

I really don't understand why there is such an uproar about a pro player receiving spoilers from the new set early. This has been happening for years. LSV, Chapin, Flores - they all get exclusive spoilers for new sets. Why is it all of a sudden a problem now, because the godbook got leaked? That's bogus reasoning. People will always find something to complain about.

The presumption among most of those doing the complaining was that Wizards gave each player ONE card at a time to review/spoil. People are now going in the opposite direction and assuming that all pros have access to the entire godbook a month in advance, giving all of them a huge leg up on everyone else. I've heard numerous comparisons to insider trading.

All i got from this was "WOTC is dumb so it's their fault". If someone gives you a really, REALLY nice priviledge and responsiblity, do you **** on it because "oh they shouldn't have anyway that was dumb so let me prove it to them"?
My mistake or not, i would be absolutely so upset with someone who is so big into magic if they betrayed me. This wasn't a lucky raffle winner off the street.

Happening for years doesn't make it right. Right or wrong (i'm gonna throw it out there that i think it's ridiculous, "wrong", to give any non-WOTC folks spoilers like that) the duration of offense isn't supposed to make it ok.
I think it's more like some people don't like it, but no one had a reason to talk about it until now, until a big splash in MTG news and these people are coming out with their opinions they've already had.
Now that people see even some pros/writers/MTG-celebs are fallable, they might be realizing godbook handouts are a mistake.
Yeeeeahhhh, people alllllwayyyyys find SOMETHING to complain about. But we shouldn't be surprised. This one is actually kind of ridiculous. This isn't BAWWWWWW complaining, i think trusting non-WOTC folks is a legitimate issue.

I don't see how it is wrong to give specific amount of people a god book to use for spoiler articles and promotion.

Salvation noooooooo

By your logic (if you can call it that), when a 19 year old university student is arrested for underage drinking, it is his parent's fault entirely for his actions and he should suffer no consequences for his choices. Oh, and before sending him off to college his parents made him sign a legal contract stating he cannot drink alcohol until he turns 21.

Complaints about "all the pros are getting the set before we do!!!11!111 ZOMG INJUSTICE" are nonsense, too. Matignon was writing a set review. Not a card spoiler, a set review. This is not as though they sent him the entire godbook with a note saying "here, now preview Mental Misstep" or something. You can't really do a set review without, oh I don't know, seeing the set you're reviewing? Matignon didn't get a godbook because he was a player. He got it because he was a writer. Past tense deliberate on both.

Im 100% ok with Matignon getting his 3 year ban, and really surprised they aren't persuing legal action. HOWEVER, the other 3 were involved with NO NDA with wotc, and shouldn't have been punished. Wotc only gave Matignon the book, with the agreement that it was not to be distributed. Wafo and the others didnt steal it, Matignon broke NDA by giving it out. Once it reaches beyond him, wotc shouldn't take further action. Heck, does this mean I get 18 months off, because there certainly IS a copy of this godbook on my desktop.

No NDA, but it's kinda "common-sense" to at least be subtle in spoilerzing stuff.

still illegal distribution of copyrighted material as well as dissemination of trade secrets.

if you were in their shoes, would you prefer an 18 month dci suspension? or a civil suit?

Well, that logic would hold if I thought that a nineteen year old should be arrested for underage drinking. I disagree with that and mostly that law is politically motivated.

Wizards is arguing that this has adversely affected their sales. Where is the evidence that this is so???? I work for Metalunderground.com, I have done several papers, research on illegal downloading and leaking on music, and found the evidence that it adversely affects the music industry is inconclusive. IT was leaked only a couple weeks before the whole set would be?? Who cares???

File a lawsuit??? You got to be kidding me. They would have to spend so much money on an international lawsuit that they might not make anything (or break even); it's not even worth it.

I did not read the whole story, but did those players sign a contact explicitly stating that they would not maliciously leak the cards??? If not, nothing should be done. If it was a said deal or just on a trust basis, it is wizards' fault.

I guess wizards can suspend whoever they want though. I just think they should not have done it because what does this prove? The natural consequence to the players who were involved were they no longer have those rights. What does suspending their dci account have anything to do with the case?????

Edit: At least we can all agree that in the future, Wizards is probably going to rethink this whole who gets to peak at the "godbook," and it is possible that they just will not let any players get access to it. If they're that concerned with keeping the cards from being leaked early, they should not make such poor decisions. Wizards was begging for something like this to happen.

Once it reaches beyond him, wotc shouldn't take further action. Heck, does this mean I get 18 months off, because there certainly IS a copy of this godbook on my desktop.

Well, Wizards did touch on this subject in the whole Rancored_Elf fiasco..

Here's the important takeaway. We know that opportunities for new leaks will continue to arise. Please understand that Wizards of the Coast does not condone spoilers of any type, except what we specifically authorize. (And I'm not just talking about playtest cards.) If you find yourself in the position of having such information – unreleased information of any kind - please think very hard before sharing it with the world. Wizards of the Coast will take action if it deems it necessary.

I agree that giving a pro-tour player, regardless of where he is employed, a copy of a set four months before anyone else can see it, is an unfair advantage for that player. There should be some DCI rule stating that IF they were to give such a thing to a player, that player is not allowed to play in any sanctioned event for that set, for at least a month after it's release.

Thanks,
