So I went to the Post Office today and sent off 4 international packages two of them destined for Canada and the post-lady told me that there is a three week delay for mail to Canada as they are expecting the Canadian Postal service to strike soon or some such thing. My question is, is this true and can any Canadians confirm or deny this report? Obviously she has no reason to lie what I am curious about is how long is slow Canadian mail going to be the norm, or are we stuck with this for the foreseeable future?

Seriously? Wow, I hope Canadian traders are letting people know about this. It already takes forever for some stuff to travel in between. I can't imagine what this will end up doing to the whole process.__________________ Wisconsin - smells like dairy air!

From what I've been hearing, the collective bargaining process is not going as well as the CUPW would like, they are adamant about not changing over to a new system of sick leave yet Canada Post seems insistant on switching to a new system...There is still time to bargain, but I'm guessing they will end up going on strike if Canada Post doesn't make some major concessions soon.

Well it's a challenge to run a mail system for a country like Canada. It makes no sense that it costs the same to send from one house to another in Vancouver and from Vancouver to Iqualuit, thousands of miles away and above the arctic circle. But that's the system. I suppose the issue might be that there's a surplus of labour and due to the union agreement CP can't just fire workers, so they are trying to slash pay instead.

canada being such a large country with a widely dispersed population makes mail/shipping a logistical nightmare.....gotta be the reason why it costs us canadians 1.20 just for postage to the USA.its more about how the next generation of postal workers isnt going to be able to make a living working for canada post....pay cuts, part vs full time positions, etc they are striking to protect future generations of canada post employees

Unfortunatly, that site doesn't work in Canada, hilariously enough. The newest episode of South Park was awesome though, my province got a shoutout as "The little mushroom People of Nova Scotia", haha, I love it.

its not really common knowledge that the strike is coming....most people are unaware and take the postal system for grantedthey will get mandated back to work within a month by the govenment

Probably faster than within a month. A lot of business still depends on the mail system.

I read an article today about the Canadian Postal strike in 2008. It said that there wasn't any shutdown of the delivery, that it more affected the administrative and financial side of the Postal Service. Think it would be similar this time around?

If I remember correctly, the last time there was such a strike, mailman were still delivering mail.... it just took longer than usual (I guess there were less workers on duty). But hey, if they go on strike I'll simply go with FedEx and make only big trades that's all.

If there is a strike then usually there is back to work legislation enacted by the Federal Government with in a week or two. Then the Post Office "works to rule". Mail delivery is slowed down, delivery staff use any reason in their arsenal not to deliver the mail, etc.

I hate them :PThey make twice my salary (I actually think it's closer to 3x), have a great future, etc... and yet, they want more and more and more... I love my union-free job ''you don't like your salary or working hours? Go get another job then'' Great-West have all I need if I ever get sick/injured. I guess I'm the only one who prefer jobs without unions :/

Indeed, clerks of the ''main'' stores where the post offices are, are doing the mail services. I went to the convenience (dunno how to spell that sorry :/) store nearest to where I was to ship some cards....and it was the convenience store clerk who came to the post counter. Same thing at the Jean-Coutu store near my home and also the book store (yes, post offices are in book stores too lol :P). Dunno why they ask the clerks to do the mail job... I even had to ask the one at Jean-Coutu to charge me more stamps and he said ''why?'' so I told him ''1.23$ for a bubble mailer to the US as always been 2.36$ because it's oversized.... white enveloppes are 1.23$ to ship the to US''. He didn't seemed to understand the ''oversized'' letter part -_- Hate 'em.
