Topic: Hoarding Your Favorite Card: When is Enough?

Most of us here will collect at least a few cards. Well, I myself collect a certain common card whose pictures I like a lot. When I started out, I get to a few binder pages (1 page = 9 cards) pretty fast. It is nice looking at those pages. After a period, I filled up a binder that can hold 180 cards in total. It is still nice flipping through the binder looking at them. Now that I have reached 800+ pieces, the other 600+ pieces are sitting in various boxes. 2 boxes can hold 200 cards each, and another 5 small boxes that can hold 50 cards each. Though my collection is enhanced, but I no longer have the joy of "flipping through album" looking at these newest 600 additions. They are kind of like bulk UC/C that people store in boxes. So a few questions What do you guys do when you have reached a large number (hundreds, maybe even thousands) of the cards that you collect? Do you keep upgrading to thicker binders to put all of them within 1 binder? Or do you start using boxes to store them? When do you intend to stop hoarding your favourite card?

Although I haven't been actively searching for Gruul Nodorogs like I used to, I'm well over 1,000 (I think it's about 1,500, but haven't counted lately) and am close to starting my 3rd binder. I have no intentions of stopping until there are none left to get.__________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. Trade them to me, please! My Blood of the Martyr collection is over 200 cards, so it needs like 25 or so pages, not a big deal.My squirrel collection is much larger, but I just keep the common, non-foil squirrels (Acorn Harvest, Chatter of the Squirrel) in a box, rather than in pages. As far as my whole collection goes, though, I have a Standard binder, an Extended/Legacy binder, a Squirrel binder, and a Blood of the Matyr + Artist binder (I'm trying to get one of every card by Rob Alexander, in foil if possible). If I run out of room, I can always just stick cards in another binder. __________________ There are two rules for success: 1. Don't tell all you know.

I stop pretty early on. What I like to (try to) do after I get a few binder pages of the card is focus on more interesting or unique versions of it. FBB if available, artist proofs, signed, altered, etc.

I collected Dark Rituals, Counterspells and Hymn to Tourach for a while, but then I realized there wasn't a point, or market to do so, and I just trade for cards I actualy need. I do still collect Ihsan's Shade, but only as throwins.

Orgg. I will own them all!I don't understand how once you've finished training an Orgg it gets to be so... bad, though? My Magic Online User Name = "DontTrainMyOrgg" as reference! Hahaha To answer the question: Yes, I continue to binder them. I put them in my trade binders at the front, and to separate colors. I have quite a few binders, so I'm spreading them out! :P

I collected lightning bolts until they reprinted them a second time. had thousands at my peak. I would hazard a guess that many people started global collections as an alternative to hoarding a specific card. It's harder to do and more rewarding.

When the market dries up. I have a pretty big chunk of the Nantuko Shades in Boston and its gotten to the point where I see probably one every couple of weeks. It's also difficult to justify trading for them online due to shipping costs and the fact that its not worth much. __________________ Most References in Massachusetts 85th All-timeSupport my friend's store: http://www.tabletoparena.com

We should wait for BernieB to explain how he showcases his Stone Rains. That will be the answer. As for when to stop, it depends on what you collect. I collected foil Morgue Toads for a while, but I quickly realized I'd run into a problem of displaying them, i.e., a binder full of them is cool, but 6 binders? At that point it isn't really any more impressive, and you just look crazy. However, if you hoard something that's a little more rare, then it gets a lot more interesting and managable. It doesn't need to necessarily be valuable either. If you had 100 Warrior's Oaths, that'd be impressive. I think the key to having a good collection is being able to showcase the effort you put into building the collection. quote: Originally posted by Havoc Demon: When the market dries up.
Actually, I disagree. This is when it becomes a lot more rewarding to build on it. It's taken me forever to find the past few Zombie Masters, but it's been well worth it.

This (minus the Boston part ). I'm currently hovering at around ~200 Nantuko Shade. I want a version of each language foil/non foil, and at least a few signed copies before I "stop" actively seeking them. No one within ~45min of me seems to have them anymore, and unless I buy/trade for them in bulk, it's not worth it. In terms of storage, I'll never toss them in a box. I sleeve each copy (penny sleeve obviously) and stick them in an ultra pro page. I'll have to reconsider this of course, if I get even remotely close to my ultimate goal; having XXXX amounts of them (largest Nantuko Shade collection ever. Period).

Memnites, Rukh Eggs (AN versions), Wurmcoil Engines (and tokens), and Lotus Petals are cards I hoard. I also have a Thorn Elemental Collection I started a while back that I still add to, though I'm only adding foil versions and art proofs at the moment.I figure I'll probably stop when I reach a full, large-sized binder for each with the Memnites, Wurm Tokens, AN Rukh Eggs, and Lotus Petals. The Wurmcoil Engines, and Thorn Elementals I will continue to collect and add into new binders as needed. My collections are not that huge at the moment though so this is something I've not had to deal with yet. Not really sure if this counts as hoarding or not, but I'm also trying to collect 10,000+ foils of any set/rarity in NM/Mint condition (no basic land) which I'm not really bothering to display at the moment. They all go in penny sleeves and card boxes. Once I have them I'll probably just keep them as a big box-O-foils. Displaying them in binders would be fun, but is probably not worth the time to do since they are all going to be (mostly) different cards. No particular reason for collecting these except to see if I can pull it off so I'm not terribly motivated to display them except as bulk boxes. __________________ "You broke into my house, stole my property, murdered my servants, and my PETS! Do you happen to know of someone who personally has a larger collection? I collect Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief primarily, to a lesser degree Sangromancer, Vampire Hexmage, and Mirri, the Cursed. I probably have almost 40 Drana now (no foreign though, WTF), about a dozen Sangromancer in 4 or 5 languages, and a dozen Hexmage in 3 languages (and 2 that are overly purple. Instead of it's regular print color they are much more vivid and look sweet). Don't have many Mirri but i did get a sweet russian one. I also keep every vampire card i have (i also collect every other vampire card) on me whenever i go places stored in a 800ct box with my decks, wasting space. For a while i started carrying less decks but i've been removing extras of commons and just keeping every rare or pimp and 1 copy each of the common stuff. I probably won't stop collecting vampires in general, but i will actively seek out a global set of Drana, and hopefully collect enough to affect the price. I know it will take a long time but if i could obtain literally every copy i would do it. For Drana i keep 10 at a time in a penny sleeve, and foils 2 to a sleeve. I put several Drana in a cool black lotus sleeve to stand out for EDH. Someone send me foreign Drana. Why do i have none and why have i seen none? I must have like 6 languages of vampires yet none of the one i care about most >.> Edit:

Umm, that's how you know you have too many. Would be different i set them in binders i kept at home I was recognized at a local shop from MOTL because of this.

I collect Serra Angel and Nightmare - all languages, editions, foil/nonfoil, box toppers, etc. I currently have them in a binder that I show off to friends when they come over. I have earned a bit of a reputation as "The Serra Angel Guy" at my local card stores...I try and trade for every Nightmare and Serra Angel I can. People even trade for them at stores I don't go to so they can trade them to me.

For me, it's cost/availability. I have every Arabian Nights Mountain I have ever personally seen. It's uh...not many, but it's my card and I loveses them I do. That said, I'm none too keen on paying $30+ for them on ebay or wherever else. That's my line I guess, when costs are prohibitive.

It's awesome to see how high your collection can get, if for no other reason. If it gets boring than go for the global set, than the global playset. Others (mr. Sherman and aether storm come to mind) collect signed versions signed by motlers and other magic related people. Getting altered versions by other members is another great alternate version.

I'm working towards the largest collection of a single card in the world. I may have it, not sure. I'm at 3.66% of the entire print run. Problem is I've single handedly increased the price on the card by 400%.

As far as I know of? No. I'm sure Havoc is somewhere near that, or probably one of the few people that can come close.
However, once my new motorcycle is paid off, I plan on skimming through the sales threads here and just buying them from every dealer that has 10-15+... I mean, they're like .80-$1 per copy. I'm sure there's someone out there that has a huge collection of them, but these things don't go noticed really. If you know anyone that has a larger collection though, send them my way! P.S. @ Havoc... RECONSIDER MY OFFER SIR!! EDIT: What's really going to be interesting is trying to find signed, altered, and/or signed, foil, altereds... those are going to be a pretty penny. I mean, how many altered Nantuko Shade can there be in the world? Or signed + foil + altered? My wallet cried a bit.

Absolutely. My MOTLer-altered Nodorogs get the very front of my first binder! I had a little time to kill, so went through and updated the numbers on my Nodorog collection, and this is what I have: 16 MOTLer-altered 6 Japanese 4 Japanese foil 37 Chinese 0 Chinese foil - need! 0 French - need! 3 French foil 112 Russian (1 signed) 4 Russian foil (1 signed) 8 German 0 German foil - need! 93 English foil (2 signed) 1740 English (1 signed) 2023 total, plus the original sketch that Pete Venters submitted to WotC before creating the artwork, and an artist proof that he sketched for me. More than I thought, but clearly a lot of holes in getting all of the languages covered. If anyone knows of languages I'm missing, please let me know! I believe Spanish and/or Portuguese are needs, but not sure, really. __________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. Trade them to me, please! Send me your Juggernauts!Yeah I don't know how many I have at this point, but it's some large number. Have a bunch of types too from A/B/U to fbb/rev./ on down. Thought of something that would actually be pretty cool to use them for, get a bunch and make a short flip card movie. Basically draw something on the pic or add text and then flip through them w/ a camera rolling, post it on youtube or something of that nature. At least at that rate you have used them to some degree and they aren't just being hoarded! .02, Jesse __________________ "call the hospital now" "I'm gonna kill you" inspiring words from Mino Fazio

Alpha something Either Dwarven Demo Team or Animate Wall would be my guess. Those cards are ridiculously hard to get in Alpha. __________________ Collecting signed cards. PM me...Total signed cards: 25'166 my stuff

Like a flavor text:An advisor once asked the Western Paladin how much gold would be enough. "I have no need of fools who can imagine ‘enough,'" he told the advisor's corpse. Pretty much sums it up. I collect Hand of Justice, Thing from the Deep and Amulet of Unmaking. I'm looking through the old sets to see which card I like, and collect that. Maybe Knights of Thorn, love the art. Then, I'll go for 1% of the printrun. __________________ #2 in posts from British Columbia!Got any Portuguese Foils? Post on my list or email me at valter.cid@gmail.com !

My card is CE/IE Jade Statues. I know where about 30 more are, but I can't pay $4-$6 each for them. I'll just continue picking up CE sets and plucking them out of there. There's 9 alpha dwarven demo teams on ebay, but zero animate walls.
