I won't say what I paid for it, but I will say that I wouldn't sell it for less than $2k.

Look for art that you like. It should be something you enjoy.

That's really the best advice. I once bought a piece of Magic artwork on eBay for $50 just because it was cheap - and it was basically throwing money away when I look back at it. Oh, and perhaps just as important - realize how expensive it is to get your artwork custom framed before you buy it!

I went to Gen Con earlier this year and went to Wayne Reynold's booth, and he let me know that he still had the original art for a version of my favorite card, Armadillo Cloak for $450. I was so excited that I told him I'd buy it right there and then. He asked me if I understood where the decimal point was, because I guess I apparently don't look like I buy art. He didn't have it on him, so I had to wait for him to get back to the UK. I waited a few days, and contacted him only to find out he had sold it to someone else thinking they were me. It was the biggest heartbreak in MTG I've ever had, but at least now I'm on a mission to get Paolo Parente's version. It's a long shot, but I'm going to find a way to contact him. If anyone ever hears about a friend having the original art for either Armadillo Cloak, let me know.

I'm aware its expensive, but not really sure how much it typically runs. Care to give a ballpark figure I should expect if I were to need something framed down the road? I keep looking at pieces here and there but never quite pull the trigger. Some I do regret.

Its been my experience that framing can be about $200 but thats on the cheap side, it all depends on how you want it mounted, what style matting you want, the frame and how fast you want it done.

I would someday like to contribute meaningfully to this thread with pics/scans/stories (I am loving seeing what people own, it's sweet!). I remember Chris Rahn was selling the original Sword of Body and Mind at Worlds for $750. Is that about average? I thought that it would be a nice piece to own if I had the spare cash. He did say, however, that a lot of artists are digital now, himself included, and originals are becoming less common.

This sounds about right. Though it also depends on the size of the artwork which in turn determines the amount of framing used. If I remember correctly, some of the older pieces are smaller then more modern ones. I just got some artwork (non MTG) framed and it was 4 10"x10" pieces for about $500 total. That included the matting and a simple (though a bit thicker than normal) black frame. __________________ PMs don't work in Chrome or Firefox 4.0+, see HERE for work arounds.

The price all depends on the size of the piece, how it is matted, and what quality of frame you want. Your best bet is to try to find some kine of wholesale framing place in your area if there is one, and get a reaonable deal.Whatever you do, don't go Michaels or some retail chain (even with their garbage 60% off coupon, trust me). Their selection of frames is poor, prices are overinflated, quality isn't as good and turnaround time is forever because they order all the frames. I've spent anywhere from $80 to $400+ on getting pieces of art framed. If you have a nice piece of art that you really like, definitely do not skimp out when it comes to the frame, you'll regret it!
