I'm doing some research on the original Magic: the Gathering art from the Alpha/Beta set. I know the length of time passed since these pieces were created but I'd like to put together a catalogue raisonné of every Alpha and Beta artwork.

A catalogue raisonné is a list for curators or collectors to use to figure out what's out there for exhibitions.

I wish to document what's still available, what has been sold, (or lost, as these things happen), and investigate some more. I'm not looking for any compensation, just information to put together a guide, a small print run book (<5 copies), to be available, but not widely available.

My ultimate goal is to put on an art exhibition, but it's 3+ years down the road. Before I do that, I need to figure out who to talk to first. The artists are working their own angles and I figure this needs to be done before, well, estates come up or artists themselves pass away.

Anyone know any major collectors of mtg art out there or any other leads?

Post or PM me at your leisure.

Thanks.

Stone Rain sold a few weeks ago on ebay. Peter Adkison owns Walk and probably others. Steal Artifact is currently for sale by Amy Weber.

According to the guy selling the Pearl, WotC owns quite a few of the Betas.

I had seen at least one, if not 2, of the plains up on ebay but its been maybe a year or so. They were way over priced.

I don't get that site. They had the original art for DanDan at 4888 for a while and it didn't move. So they decided to change the price to 3 grand more. I don't get it.

Yeah, Peter is on my list to follow up with soon.
Daniel Chang comes up quick, yes, but that's only the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks for responding everyone.

I'm making progress. chugga chugga chugga

If we happen to find out about the Zombie Master art, I want it. Attempts to contact Jeff Menges have failed, so if anyone has any ideas...

So, I've begun the undertaking.
It's going to take a while.

Folks, if you hear anything or it ever comes up, please drop me a line. This will take 2-3 years at least to get all the information into a formal catalogue raisonné.

And yes, Steal Artifact was sold.

Scott, believe it or not I contacted him a few years ago about this very piece, which I was highly interested in buying. He said he still owned this piece, but he didn't want to sell.

I still have the email if you want to read it.

"Actually, I DO have the original artwork for ZM—However, It is the only painting from the original 15 I still own, and I am very unwilling to part with it." - Jeff Menges, from an email 29 July 2009

Last I heard the high bid was at $800. I don't know what the highest offer came in at though. As much as I love collecting original Magic art, and as awesome as it would be having an Alpha piece, I just couldn't force myself to fall in love with the art. And, at 5x7" it just doesn't do enough for me.

Thanks, Matt! I guess we'll just have to wait and see if he ever decides to let it go. At least we know where it is.

You know what would be better? A reprint of Zombie Master in M13 with the original art as an uncommon.

Yeah, but Wizards always fails at that. They'd put the 5th Edition art on it or something even worse. Evidently, the art these days has to be insanely busy or detailed; nothing simple will suffice.

Part of that I think is that WoTC doesn't own the old art. I don't know all the legal stuff but they probably commissioned the use of the art in the early days so they'd have to pay out a huge commission or royalty check if they wanted to re-use say the original Llanowar Elves art.

At some point they realized they'd probably be sticking around as a company/game and now they probably pay a flat fee for the art and use it whenever and wherever they want.

Yeah, it basically looks like copyrights on the original stuff stayed with the artist with the old cards, yeah. Hence why older stuff will have "Illus. (c) Artist" while now everything is "Artist" but "(c) Wizards of the Coast." In short, yes, WOTC would have to get a license from the artist to re-use the old stuff, since they don't own the copyright on it.
