I started playing in 95 and I've probably quit and come back to the game 5 times, literally, throughout the years. I left at different stages of my life, for different reasons, usually to get money I needed or because a girlfriend, and then eventually a wife took my attention away. What about you?

started in 94First stopped after college, no one to play with no store near me. (Weatehrlight) Started up around Odyssey, and started playing Vintage since I could afford all the cards with my real job. Stopped around Ravnica, Local store sucked, started playing WoW, didn't like highly competitive magic. Started up with Zendikar. Good new local store, learned some of my friends also played and they got back into it too. Loved the block theme and the hidden treasures. And got back into judging. Testing for L2 in a few weeks. Oh and EDH got me back too.

Joined in Tempest block because my friends started playing (middle school).Quit with Mercadian Masques because I had better things to do in high school. Started again with Torment because some friends started again. Probably because Odyssey and Onslaught were very well designed sets. Quit again with Mirrodin because the new card frames were the worst mistake they've made since I began Magic. I occasionally bought a few cards I found interesting (and sold my Time Walk/LoA), but I didn't really keep up with the game during this time. Returned during Alara block because I moved to Seattle and wanted to play Legacy more regularly.

I started during Weatherlight and quit because I had other commitments. I started again due my buddy who picked up Magic and then later moved onto MTGO when he got a girlfriend and fell off the face of the earth.

I started in the fall of 1994, a bit before I went to boot camp for the Navy. I remember meeting other guys that played and how excited we were about this new 'Fallen Empires' set coming out. Played a lot throughout my Navy career, some interesting stories are the time on the Ohio when I got up to go to the head during a game in progress, and when I came back couldn't draw land for anything, because my 'buddy' had stripped out most the land from my deck while I was away. When I floated on Anchorage a friend that played and I decided to only bring cards we could afford to lose if the ship sank, (Anchorage was old) and how Hornet Cannon would save me time and again. Shortly after I left the Navy my wife left and me I sold out completely before moving to Seattle, sending my entire collection of 10 years to a dealer on the east coast for 6k. Could have gotten 9 or 10k breaking it up and selling it myself, but knew that I would save a deck here, sideboard cards for it there, 'oh, that's cool, I should keep that' to the point of selling nothing of any import. In Seattle I found a playgroup and bought the cards for the 2005 version of red deck wins and some other cards, only to watch that group dissolve soon after and I could not find another. So I sold those cards at a small loss before emigrating to Europe, at which time I had only 9 cards for the art / emotional attachment. One of them was my signed Veteran Bodyguard, my first 'favorite' card from the times I was still learning the game. So I thought I was done with Magic as I left for Europe, blissfully ignorant of the vibrant communities here.

I always quit because I realize how much money I throw into the game to play standard. Now I play casually and just edh at my lgs. Much better atmosphere financially!

I started in 98 when Urza's Saga came out. I didn't really quit but stopped buying and playing during the Time Spiral block and started buying again in Lorwyn. Then after Rise of the Eldrazi came out I sold most of my stuff to pay for a vacation. Then I started buying again in New Phyrexia and have been playing since.

I started playing after Visions was released in high school (which I guess was 1997), I played for a bit longer until I got my license (a year and a half later)...got involved in this thing called alcohol. Last deck I played was Tolarian Academy.dec (combo winter in 1998)I picked up the Xbox Duels of the Planeswalkers game...they offered to let you pick up a card and a deck from the local shop...picked it up and started playing FNM at shop. So roughly (1998/99 to 2009) ten years. I went to get all my old cards and half were ruined by water damage Now I hardly play, been pretty focused on work, but I make the FNM trip (only shop in town closed, have to go ~30 miles to play FNM but shop is better ). __________________ <Liq> you just can't expect a sig worthy line to appear out of nowhere on demand <stacker> i dont hang out with the patients afterwards, we got nurses for that "Basically, if you ever find yourself daisy-chaining multiple dongles together, you must be doing pretty well in life."

Every time I quit it's because of lack of time or people to play with, and every time I started playing it's because I have just enough free time to and a LGS within reasonable distance.I don't play Standard and most people here do; FNM is always Standard. So I'm stuck with just drafting once a week and the very occasional Legacy (I think once a month there's a tournament). That's actually alright, it cuts down significantly on the time investment and will likely keep my interest more without burning out. I DON'T want to play MTGO. Not because I don't like the program or anything, but because it'll cost way too much money.

Started at Legends, quit at Mirage because Fallen Empires, Ice Age Block, Mirage sets were so bad and I got tired of playing the same cards. I tried to sell out, but couldn't find anyone to buy it all, so when the sets improved with Tempest block/Saga, I started up again. I've kept going since.

I usually quit because of Money or lack of people to play with.Started at Ice Age/Fallen Empires when i was about 13/14, quit sometime before college and then got back into it after i finished college because there was a store to play at. Took a hiatus for about 5-9 months when i bought my house. __________________ Member Since 03/28/2001 12000+ posts 1st in posts in Ontario 11th in posts on MOTL 5th in Refs in Ontario Pushing to get to top 100 in MOTL Refs

When I was 12 (1999), I got into the Pokemon craze and started collecting the cards. After being unable to find them in Target, Walmart, etc, I found a collectible card shop in the phone book and called them up. When I went there, I bought some Pokemon cards and my brother decided to buy some Magic cards. I quickly set Pokemon aside and started playing Magic (we only had Portal cards at the time). By the time we were buying real cards, I think Urza's Legacy was the newest set. I ended up quitting around Apocalypse or so because I was starting high school and my interest in the game had waned. I ended up selling all my cards (very much regret this now lol)I started randomly buying packs/drafting with friends around Shards of Alara and continued this through Conflux, but didn't ever consider actually getting back into the game at that point. I then looked into Magic Online around the time NPH was coming out, and ended up selling all the cards I pulled through drafting for MODO tickets. About a month after getting back into Magic via MODO, I discovered there was a LGS 10 minutes from where I live and literally a 1-minute drive from where I work. I cashed out of MODO and have been playing ever since. Its kind of funny looking at my sanctioned event history. There is a gap from 6/4/2001 to 7/16/2011. I missed so much Some of my best friends to this day are ones that I met at the card shop where I bought some Pokemon cards 13 years ago (that shop has been closed for probably 9 or 10 years now). In fact, I'm trying to get some of these people back into MTG now, but its tough because I live 2 hours away from most of them.

Started in Odyssey. Sold a bunch of overpriced modern and legacy cards to buy a car.In hindsight, should have sold a bit more and bought a slightly better one lol.

I started early in 94 and played very activly until Kamigawa. I thought the game had completely gone to poo at that point and was very burnt out, one day I was playing and the next I never looked at my cards again for years. I stopped in a hobby shop when I moved to the city and bought some M10, been hooked against ever since.

I started playing right before stronghold, and have played off and on since. But I have never stopped collecting cards... infact I think I've looked at, touched, or read about something magic every day since I started playing. I've been tempted a few times to sell off my collection but when I think about the time that I've put into it and the very likely fact that I would start playing/collecting again at some point. I can't bring myself to do it.

When mythic rares came out, I stopped playing standard. When the nearest shop banned me on a pretext after I reported them to Wizards for overcharging and under-prizing pre-releases, I stopped paper. Lately just play MTGO a few times/month, but even that is taking a back seat to other personal projects. Still love to trade though, that's playing in a sense.

I started in the Summer of 2003 and played during the summers until 2005. The reasons it was only during the summers was the only people I played with were camp friends, and we all lived in different areas so I would put the cards away for the school year and not think about it. I came back in the fall of 2007, a few weeks after the release of Lorwyn when a friend brought it up. I've been back ever since.__________________ If my offers look really unbalanced, let me know and I'd be happy to try and change it! This has been really great to read, I appreciate everyone sharing. A lot of semi-similar experiences I would say. In the end, that this proves just one thing - this game is cardboard crack and none of us will probably ever escape it completely <3 <3 <3

Started Summer 2003 with the very end of Scourge. Played fairly actively until Lorwyn, and then only once every so often because I hated the set. Got a bit back into Shadowmoor but had other things come up and couldn't play that much. Tried to get into Alara but got too angry at getting mana screwed each and every game. Came back in Rise of Eldrazi.

Quit after Apocalypse. New storyline was not my fave in odyssey. Also, standard/t2 was too expensive for a HS kid with no job and playing three sports.Started going to prereleases in Ravnica. Did well. Continued with this trend until today. EDH. So fun. Started this up, and this is mainly what I play. __________________ -Schmitty 85th in Refs [280] on MOTL (1 behind gar) 2nd in Refs [280] in OH-IO (74 behind souladvocate) 2nd in Posts [7454] in OH-IO (only 600 behind Val) “If Brad Stevens is the future of coaching in college basketball, the sport is in a good place.” - Rick Pitino
