When I saw Volrath's Strong hold being sold out on SCG at about $10.00 I searched and found a few sites that were selling them super cheap so I bought about 50-75 of them... Turns out I had just had one too many beers and ended up buying Volrath's Gardens instead. Thats pretty much my only attempt at speculation as you can see I'm very good at it.

My first attempt at speculation was my worst one by far. 100 Keldon Firebombers from Prophecy at $1 each. Never went above $1...EVER. My best one by far was buying 10 dealers out at regionals of Tarmogoyfs for $3-5 each. I snagged about 50 at that price. But i think alot of people wrecked that deal around the world.

Does the other way count? Because I sold all my tarmogyfs at $50

My best was Survival of the Fittest when Exodus first came out.At my peak I had between 35-40 of them, most being throw ins. My worst, Planar Collapse. I still have almost 90 of them.

My best was Masticore, but wasn't really speculation, I just loved the art had over 200 and like ~20 foils when they went from bulk to money. At the time I just thought they were really cool. Worst I've ever done, Taurean Mauler, seemed so good to me at the time... 0_o __________________ I shall have the souls of all who defy me. "Lord Crovax"

I was! And that was a time when reprints helped prices!!! Too bad I was young and dumb; wizards reprinting the thing a billion times didn't help either

Patience. It is another one that may get there in a few years.

Alternatively, I see it having another run in standard in the next couple of years, which isn't a good outlook.

Exquisite Blood, a more recent success, got a bunch of these cause I knew they were casual gold. Now they are sold out almost everywhere. Silly Guildmage Also add Gloom Surgeon as a fail, luckily I got them for like 0.08 cents each so...no real loss. __________________ I shall have the souls of all who defy me. "Lord Crovax"

I bought a couple dozen snapcasters for around $19 each. They haven't changed in price much since then but I still have my hopes up. I got drunk and bought a playset of temporal mastery for like $80. I figured that with sensei's top and personal tutor it'd be the next big card. With top you can even cast it on other people's turn - how cool is that. __________________ |My Angels~My P9 l""|"\__, |~~My #1 Angel~~l'_|'_|_|) |(@)(@)""***|(@)(@)**|(@)

i bought a total of about 400 of deus of clamity, oona queen of fae and another card in ebay pre sale. we all know what happen and i never did this again.bought 60 reflecting pool when 5c was owning t2. bought at the peak and price never increased further. i was lucky to lose only 10% of what i paid. a better story was zen fetches. had like 1000 normal ones and 200 foil ones and they never increase from $9-11. after i sold about half, they took off in oct 2012 duals are better. had like 1500. again after i sold about half of them, they started going up in 2009. for shocklands, i had hundreds, sold some and tought i amstuck with them, then MODERN was created. in early 2012 i stockpiled 80 goyfs including 10+ foils and they never go up. sold 20+ at breakeven and now they finally gone up...... i am terrible at 1-2 months speculation. but fare.better if my holding period is 1-2 years and assuming i do not have too many.

I'm still waiting for AEther Storm to go foil. The old reprints will surely skyrocket after that. I'm gonna be rich!!

I never understood the Zen fetches and their prices. When they came out they were relatively low in price and people were valuing them as though they were "no big deal". Look at them now. Right where I would have expected them to be.

I always sell too early. I sold my Scroll Racks, Lion's Eye Diamonds, and Show and Tells when they first jumped, assuming they were over priced.Personally, it seems to me the Magic Online Shocklands are underpriced for the following 3-4 year period. But, I'm probably just being bad at this again.

Puresteel Paladin .. thought that guy was going to be a BFD in Standard ... nope. Only went in on about 20 or so.Reading that Eye of ugin thread ... I realize the offer he got of $240 for his 40 eyes by todays standards would be very generous. Wonder if he took it.

Um...oh...wow, you are a special one for sure.
Nix was my miss. The idea sounded good at the time, free spell, does something unique, from Future Sight. Never got there. I have 2, Shadow of Doubt and Boom/Bust that are showing promise finally. I don't have too many failures really since I am very careful where I pick my spots. My big hits in the past were having ~400 Tarmogoyfs before they spiked, kinda easy to see a 3/4 for 1G was a good deal. Also bought about 100 Arcbound Ravagers on presales. They were like $40 a set, and sold for $20+ ea since it was kind of obvious Ravager + Disciple was a thing. More recently, Land Tax, Fetches, Earthcraft, and Rite of Replication were all really good for me.

I share in your misery. Started thinning out my duals like 3 months before SCG launched the Legacy series. Got rid of Goyfs and many other playable C/UC cards that have now spiked because of modern about five months before the format was announced. Everything still sold for a profit though, so I guess I can't complain too much. I'm sure we all have our sob stories about cashing out on something too early. __________________ Wisconsin - smells like dairy air!I collect Granite Gargoyles. Send them my way.
