Excalibur, Circus Circus and most casinos on Fremont come to mind immediately as making Station casinos look like the Aria. Station casinos are obviously not on the same level as the major hotels on the strip, but as far as budget casinos, they are pretty darn good. __________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. Lady Luck was cheap but cleanliness was an issue when I stayed there. (thin line of blood inside bathtub). Straosphere was average/above average when I was there. I definitely forgot how awful Excalibur is. Never stayed at Circus Circus but I have heard it is pretty atrocious. I still think they are better then the smell of death that I smelled when I was at Palace Station in December. Place scared me lol.

How about dining options? I'm staying for a week at Circus Circus, and will be looking to try different places out.

If you like buffets, I like the Paris Hotel one. I am sure there are better. I would ask Zeckk about eating places since he lives there!

I dont live there but am only a 2 hour drive away and have frquented LV alot. I forget the name of the buffet- it's on the west side of the strip. Rio? I dont remember name but wow, what a selection-. it,s off one of the main avenues there, flamigo or trop. It's a lilittle pricey tho, liek $35 or $40 per person. __________________ 28th in refs on Motl! #1 Ref's for Arizona! I offer 3rd party trading services. Email if interested. Yeah, the Rio's international buffet is pretty good if you don't mind the price. Definitely worth it. I'll have to ask Nderwife for other ideas, since she's much more familiar with the area. __________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. I plan on spending one night going to Chef Ramsey's Pub and Grill at Caesar's. If I'm going to spend $40 on a meal, you better believe it will be there. __________________ My 2008 Nationals MOTL's Pro-Tour Winner 2007-2009 Tower Magic FacebookhilikuS: Also, as much as MAB's list has become the list on the T/A Forum, I do miss Slinga's.

Just to add to this - The 24-hour cafe at Southpoint has a fantastic midnight menu where everything is under $4, and I'm talking about steak, ham steak, breakfast platters, etc. The quality of the food is definitely above the price. The cafe in Hard Rock has a secret plate on the menu called the Gambler's Special - steak, buttered shrimp, side salad, garlic mashed potatoes for $7.77. Good quality meat there as well. Just be aware that most of the other options at this cafe are overpriced. As for buffets - The Aria buffet and the Cosmopolitan buffets are the best, hands down. Biggest range of food, highest quality, and better ethnic options than just fried rice and a taco bar. Also, Aria buffet has an all-you-can-drink alcohol option at the buffet for $13, if you want to forget about your 0-3 start. If you guys are coming from an area without an IN-N-OUT burger chain, I recommend eating at least one meal there. Same goes for Fukuburger if they end up having a meal truck near the convention area. Sorry that I don't have a lot of info on food options in northern las vegas, but I'm just never up in that area.

Add one point here. The specials are almost always a great deal. I recall steak and eggs there before a SCG open that was like 4$. and a rib dinner for like 8$ BUt yes everything else they have tends to be pricey.

Close to the event site is a little casino called Jerry's nugget. Some people think they have the best prime rib in Vegas. There cafe is also decently priced. Anyone staying at golden nugget is in a good spot. There is a ton of places to eat, plus your right on Fremont. It's also cheaper to drink on Fremont then the overpriced strip.

100%. My wife is signing up, registering whatever she opens, taking what she gets passed, standing up and leaving. She has no idea how to play magic.

How much do you anticipate going to this event will cost you?Reason I ask, I'm in Pittsburgh, PA, and really want to go, but I'm looking at it and seeing the whole trip to cost roughly a grand depending if I go w/o someone. If you were on a $1000 budget for this event, do you even see if being feasible? Constructive thoughts are appreciated, Jesse __________________ "call the hospital now" "I'm gonna kill you" inspiring words from Mino Fazio

Vegas is dirt cheap if you do it right, I go multiple times a year for trade shows, etc.Hotels, especially on the weekdays, are really cheap - sometimes a bit sketch on the outskirts...but still cheap. You can stay on the strip on the lower end hotels relatively cheap, too, depending on the time of year. Food is about you making the right decisions, if you wanna pay $40-$50 for a buffet and be a fat **** then go for it, if you wanna find a subway and spend $4.99, you'll do just fine. You can walk, so no car or taxi is needed so long as your hotel is near your event. If not, avoid taxis if possible. Recent article found that Vegas is the absolute worst place in the world for taxi drivers who purposely mislead and take longer routes to earn larger fares. $1k is more than enough if you consider a 1 week trip, with $69-$89 / night hotels and $35.00 a day for food and no extras beyond that - ie avoid the craps tables. If you can split a hotel room and a car, you're golden.

Vegas gets cheaper with more people if you book plane and hotel for 2 or more people. My friend and I are going out there for 6 days for $900 a person with non stop flight both ways. Same thing would have been about $100 cheaper for 4 people but 4 of us couldn't come to an agreement on the hotel so my 2 other friends are flying out on their own and staying in a different hotel. Watch out for resort fees if anyone plans on booking and hasn't yet. They come out to about $25 a day extra.

The cards you open aren't yours, so I think you'd get in trouble if you took what you opened. The cards passed to you are yours. Just have your wife open a couple packs with you and show her a deck reg sheet. Show her how they are sorted into colors on the sheet and she should do that. Put the cards in alphabetical order by color and mark them down on the sheet. I told her when she gets passed cards to "check" to make sure other people did it right, just don't worry about it, say it's fine. When she get passed cards to keep, just put the number from the "opened" column into the "played" column. Undecided right now if she'll drop or if a rando will be getting a free bye round one.

Usually if you drop right away you get a loss for the first round.

Well she doesn't care, she doesn't play magic. If she doesn't drop, she'll get the loss and somebody will get the free win. If she drops, that person will be matched up with a new person.

Aside from the convention center for 2 days, if staying out in Vegas for a whole week is it better to take a taxi or to use the monorail service for 6-7 days? Would it just be better to just pay for a rental car for the whole week? What type of transportation would you use from the strip area to get to the convention center?

I second the Wicked Spoon (Cosmopolitan buffet). The shrimp and desserts are amazing. Best buffet I have ever been to. Caesar's is supposed to have the best rated buffet the last couple years. Also +1 for In-and-Out burger. Wish we had those in the midwest. Five Guys is always good but it's not quite the same...
